Here's my previous project:

Panda Racing No.1

A year after selling it, and owning 5 cars in the interim I decided another MX5 would be a suitable replacement car to get me to the train station and back. Last week I therefore found myself schlepping around the M25 to Essex in the rain to look at a sorry looking 1.8 incorrectly advertised as a V-Spec that I hoped was actually an S-Special.

I collected it and after inflating the tyres (the rears were on 11 and 13psi) I set off home. It doesn't have the 112mph limiter my 1.6 had. It runs out of legs at 122mph though (speedo and TomTom in agreement at that part of the dial). It's woefully underpowered and it feels quite baggy compared to my last one. Remind me, what is it I like about these cars again?
Image

I'd say the 1.8 engine isn't as sweet as the 1.6. Where the 1.6 enjoys being wrung out, the 1.8 prefers to make progress on the slightly higher torque it produces and you gain nothing from screwing the last 500rpm out of it. I'm hoping the more manly 1.8 drivetrain will last better on track than my 1.6 did though as that ate clutches, brakes etc. for fun.

My journey home averaged 29 MPG. Pretty appalling for a small car of this nature, especially when my M3 would have made circa 33 for the same journey.

Anyway, Sunday I had time to give it a quick going over and evaluate what needs to be done to it. I nearly always forget to take photos of what cars are like when I get them so tend to only have the 'after' pics. So here it is on the drive in the state it arrived:

Image

Image

Paint is very tired, car has ingrained dirt and hasn't been cleaned properly in years. It will look a million times better just having some TLC and a proper clean, sorting out the number plate bracket that's fitted upside down and a few areas of the plastic front and rear bumpers that have crazed paint will get re-painted. Good points are that it appears to have no rust on the bodywork (which is why I bought it) and the hood is new and watertight.

Wheels belong to the previous owner so they'll be going back to him. Will be good to lose the oversized budget 205/50/15 tyres that are blunting the car's responses.

Popping the bonnet revealed years of dirt and grime.

Image

The whole car seems to have been neglected so its no surprise to see a filthy engine bay. Washer fluid was empty, oil was on minimum and coolant was below minimum. At least it's mainly standard without lots of shiny tat or an awful induction kit or anything. Only areas of note are a broken dipstick handle (the history for the car shows this as an advisory on its first MOT in the country) and a broken clip for the bonnet stay, meaning over time the bonnet stay has been sat on the radiator top-hose, making a small but noticeable indentation in it. I'll get a new clip and replace the hose.

Poking around it in the daylight it's in quite a strange state. It's almost as if it has just arrived at the docks. It's got all the Japanese licencing info in the windscreen still, there are random JDM stickers here and there and the interior is filthy, and unbelievably still has Japanese parking tickets and other odds and ends in it.

Here's the important sticker saying it's an S-Spec:

Image

...and the inside of the boot lid holds clues to a potential previous life as a trackday/club racer/road warrior:

Image

Anyway, as it started raining I pulled it inside to give the inside a clean and sort out:

Image

Sticking my head in the footwell to hoover it out I found this:

Image

An original JDM flare.

Image

Image

I can't decide whether to set it off for a bit of fun or to sell it. Are these rare and would there be a market for it?

Mazdaspeed gearknob fitted. Not to my taste but possibly worth a few quid to someone? Will be in the For Sale section soon.

Image

The Nardi Torino that's fitted I do like. I'm tempted to keep it 'in stock', but may well sell that on too?:

Image

Image

Image

This is the funniest thing in the entire car:

Image

A 'carbon' ashtray.
Image
Apparently it's the one Takuma Sato had fitted to his F1 car so he could have a crafty bifta during qualifying. Will be going in the For Sale section too.

A bit of CSI digging about while cleaning the inside gave further clues to what the boot stickers had hinted at. One of the stickers was the Safety21 logo. Digging about I found the rear deck fuel tank cover had been tin-snipped and beneath them, covered up very well with metallic tape was the evidence of where the rear stays of a rollbar had been mounted.

Image

Image

Image

Then looking under the floor, holes where the main hoop had mounted were visible, but there were none where the front legs would go on a 6-point cage. Therefore, I'd assume in Japan it had a Safety21 4 point rollbar.

Image

Anyway, I gave the interior a thorough clean, removed all the unnecessary stickers. Pulled the Nardi off and replaced it with my Momo. I also climbed underneath and had a look at the suspension. The rear Mazdaspeed coilovers were backed off to their softest setting and that was that. It's now much more pleasant inside and with the back a few clicks softer it drives better too.

So far I've bought some proper chairs for it and some scaffolding to protect my head in case it falls over. Today I'm going to buy some coilovers and some wheels. It'll then need a front lip, an alignment, some brakes, harnesses, a hard-top, some paint and a thorough stripping / lighten-ing. Hopefully will get it on track by November. Will be doing it as a rolling project though, commuting sideways in it everyday and seeing what it's like to live with as a daily drive.

Compared to my last MX5 this one's always felt wrong. It had a wooly front end around the straight ahead (like a modern Audi) and through a corner the front felt 'glassy' like it didn't ever key in so you could lean on it. Power mid corner would push the front too. The rear was like a dog with a broken hind leg -it sort of 'collapsed' into a corner and then lurched around in a series of bites so typically you scribed an arc like the circumference of a 50p.

Today I took it to WIM. I had my last MX5 set up there and had been pleased with the job they did.

Image

Again I was pleased with the service and after discussing my aims for the car left with something that should give me the pointy front end I want. So far based on the drive back home it feels infinitely better. I'm at Brands a week on Monday and I'll reserve full judgement until after then.

When I got back I gave it a much needed scrub and fitted the new numberplates that have been sat in the garage for ages. I hate dealer plates with their advertising on the bottom, so I ordered some pressed-aluminium Import sized plates (with UK type) from Germany.

Image

The finishing touch for the day was a sticker. You can keep your Canibeat, Illest, Fatlace etc. sheep-like, nonsense.

For those that know. You can't buy these, you have to earn them.

Cheers JayJay - fancy giving me your wheels?
Image

I've epoxied the front plate to a new offset mount. I've lost one in the past that I'd 'NoMoreNails'-ed on so didn't want to take any chances with the price of the pressed ones and I really dislike screwed on plates.

Today I dropped the boys' Recaro in:

...and took the youngest out for lunch. I like parking the little Mazda amongst all the silly sized family tanks.

Got beeped at when we were leaving by a woman who then pretended she hadn't when she saw the boy in there. She'd obviously assumed I was using the space 'illegally'. Anyway, we drove back via some nice roads but even with the roof off he fell asleep. Belly full of soup and cake I suppose.

That's one of the things I'm really, really going to miss. I've spoken to several 2 seater owning parents about it and every one of them takes a certain perverse pleasure in the honks/disapproving looks etc they get when pulling into a kiddie space.

I certainly did - top lad he was too.

Fun car that, it's the only car I've bought that I haven't lowered more, it used to smash Catseyes out of the road for fun. I sold it to some students who took it on a Gumball Rally type adventure across Europe. I'd love to know how it did loaded up with 4 of them and all their stuff.

Last night I dropped in to Oli at Owen Garages and used one of his ramps.

Image

We fitted:

Genuine Mazda front discs
Genuine Mazda rear discs
Yellowstuff front and rear pads
HEL stainless steel braided brake hoses & stainless distribution block
ATE Superblue Fluid

Took the long way home and ran it along the A23 and did some heat cycles to bed it all in. Brakes are now spot-on for the weight of the car. Bring on Brands Hatch.

So Sunday night giving the car a quick once over before Brands on Monday morning I notice there's no fluid in the brake reservoir. Not a good sign. It's about 0?c and I'm cold and tired. Luckily it doesn't take long to find the issue, unluckily it's the new near-side rear hose that has a split right through it and the fluid is pissing out. I'm going to struggle to get a replacement in time to be at Brands for Monday 8:30... So, self amalgamating tape and some thick zip-ties to attempt to hold some fluid in the line and I top the reservoir up and cross my fingers.

Monday morning I drive back to the garage where I fitted the new hoses without using the brake pedal once which is rather interesting in places. I'm given some rubber gloves and go bin diving and after sifting through about half the bin I find my old brake lines. I fit the old one back in place, bleed everything up, drop the roof and head off to Brands. It didn't turn out too bad really, I got there by about 10:30 so got to miss the safety briefing and after decanting the contents of my boot into a pit garage head out on track.

A few snaps from the garage:

I had a brilliant day really. I did 2 full tanks of fuel and 2 Jerry cans. The car took some getting used too - and the Toyo T1-Rs really are woeful. I adapted my driving style, adjusted the dampers slightly and settled into a rhythm. The tyres still compromised the day, but having said that the car was lapping fairly well. Best ding-dong of the day was with a Max5/Ma5da Race car. We were pretty evenly matched, which I was pleased with considering mine's a daily driver with roof, heater, lights and road tyres - although he did have a passenger. I was only black flagged once too which was good - for 'taking too much of an angle' around Clearways/Clarke Curve.

The Garage Vary lip went for a bit of a Burton on my first few laps. I was taking all of the kerb at Surtees, Stock Hatch style, and it just sort of smashed off, bouncing me into the air and had me cutting the grass for a few seconds. Subsequent laps I erred more on the side of caution through there and took less kerb.

Image

Will get a new spoiler ordered up!

So, the problem is, I had a good day but I now want something like some 9" 6UL wheels and some 215/45/15 888s (?1k) and about 50 more bhp... (?1.5k+) or maybe a different car (??). I'm back to my old dilemma that ended up last time with me selling the MX5 and buying something different. Essentially I'm wary of entering the wallet drain of chasing speed in an MX5 when I could maybe start a proper build and track prep something else that's quicker to begin with...

- Elise?
- 968?
- M3?
Image

I've got my sprint series starting in March so I'll have a crack at those first and do some thinking. I've got some quicker circuits like Spa and the 'Ring booked for later in the year though. I'm wondering if the Spazda will be just too weedy on the straights?

Last time I sold up I missed the car instantly though, I think as an all-round package that you can use on the road, have a blast in the sun with the roof off down a country lane and can still punt around a track the MX5 is very hard to beat.

I think thats the beauty of the MX-5, it can cover a lot of bases for not much cash, even if you tune it. Of the other cars you list the 968 and M3 are too serious and potentially expensive. For me the roof down factor is all important - there is nothing like getting up early, putting the top down and go for a blast. The Elise would have the same problem as the MX-5 - lack of pace on the straights. If you sold the MX and put the cash together with the theoretical wheels and tuning budget you might get a decent E36 M3 but I suspect a 968 or S1 Elise would still be out of reach.

Just my $0.02, love the thread by the way

tough one matey. you can have all the handling in the world but sometimes you need that extra grunt to get you where you need to go. to be fair, t1r's are royally shite, so some decent cut-slicks would do just fine, would go on your current wheels or on a cheap set of other wheels for track purposes.
with regards to power, you could quite easily build a cheap and reliable turbo kit to bolt on and give you that extra grunt. the kit on my nb is very simple in it's design but fills the void thats missing when naturally aspirated.
with a simple t25 flange manifold, turbos can be sought easily and cheaply (from various nissans etc) and are very cheap to replace if they do go. the fuelling doesnt even need to be that extravagant either, simple air/fuel controller (safc, emanage blue) would do just fine. could probably get it all said and done got about 800quid once you get the manifold sorted.

arr so that who's the silver car was. I didn't reconise it otherwise I would have come and said hello.

you were going very well ste,

i think the 595 RSR would suit you better, we did have some fun out on track.

9j would make your car a realy weapon and its quite quick for what it is well done.

Today I gaffa-taped the Garage-Vary back together. Or at least I sort of did - there's a section about 30cm long that's now just tape... I'm thinking of getting a standard R-package spoiler next as I'm starting to prefer the look. Having said that the standard spoiler's more cash than the garage vary so I'll see.

I also fitted the Racing Mate horn push:

A random shot of the 'off' sticker needed as part of the Sprint regs. You can also see the 100Yen coin I found under the carpet that's now a 'lucky' keyring:

Yesterday Panda2 was collected by its new owner. I hadn't really intended to sell it and hadn't actually put it for sale but that's the way it goes sometimes.

Good luck with your projects, it wouldn't surprise me if I'm back in the future to make Panda3. In the meantime I've got a space in the garage I plan to fill with something Porsche or Lotus shaped.
