Looks like a great project!!!

So what lump is going to be hanging off that then??

Also didn't you buy the eunos with all the autokonexion wide arches etc??
Engine is a bit of secret until its in and working but yeah, I bought Robd`s green eunos for the wide arches, I`ve returned the engine to standard and added a few bits and the now ex missus is driving it
I know what it is ;)

But you`re not going to tell anyone as I know where you live and those meisters we fitted at the weekend would make good garden ornaments if you do!Lol

So its been way to long yet again since I`ve updated you guys. Work has been flat out which has left little time for me to work on the 5.

I managed to borrow a head and manifolds for the engine which allowed me to check clearances and position the engine on the subframe. I`m going to have to fab my own manifolds as the stock ones point the wrong way but they are larger than I plan on using and are in the worst position for packaging so should give me plenty of room

So this gives an idea of where the engine will end up. I`ve got plenty of room to the subframe for the oil pan and space between the block and body for the exhaust system too

IMAG0656.jpg

Lining it up took forever and required measuring everything countless times. A laser lever was a massive help to project a centre line down the car

There are a few missing pictures but I bought a set of cosworth engine mounts from vibratechnics which wil be perfect for this. With the aid of some CAD (cardboard aided design) I cut a mounting plate and tacked it in place. Cutting the recess for this in the subframe took ages, bolting it up, grinding a bit out, rechecking the engine position for every few mm removed was very time consuming but ensured a very good fit. Less gaps to fill means less distortion when welding too

IMAG0692.jpg

and added a couple of high tensile (12.9) captive bolts

IMAG0693.jpg

with yet more cardboard I boxed in the structure

IMAG0698.jpg

IMAG0703.jpg

IMAG0704.jpg

then transferred it all to the 3mm plate and got busy with the angle grinder

IMAG0706.jpg

IMAG0707.jpg

I welded all the upright sections first and the fillet along the back before caping them all off with 1 single perimeter weld so there is only 1 stop/start

IMAG0711.jpg

IMAG0713.jpg

For a 20yr old sub frame it welded really nicely, there was one or to pulses that dragged some crap in from the back but other than that it came out really well and isnt going anywhere!

2 updates in 1 day, arnt you the lucky ones  .

The subframe had taken most of my attention for a couple of weekends and the cage was annoying me as it looked like it had taken a few backwards steps to get the foot plates in. Time to rebuild it and add some more sections in

So for one of the last times I hope I`ve tacked (and wont be removing) the main hoop, laterals and back stays. I may need to juggle them about a bit to weld certain areas but we`ll see once I`ve added the tubes that tie in the front suspension mounts

IMAG0715.jpg

Which quickly progressed into adding tubes from the main hoop to the tunnel and one of the rear crosses too

IMAG0729.jpg

IMAG0732.jpg

and as an extra bit of excitement my seats turned up too

IMAG0718.jpg

I`m blown away by the quality of them and a massive thank you to JK composites who were a real pleasure to deal with. I just cant get any wider as the seats are a nice fit at the mo but could get a little tight post christmas eating/drinking shenanigans

I should get the rear of the cage completed this weekend, the dash bar is in there too but it wasnt overly exciting to take a pic of, and then need to add the roof and windscreen reinforcement in and then transition into the engine bay. Hopefully by the end of october it should be fully welded!

That's some tidy welding on the engine mounts! What are you using to weld?
Cheers mate, I`ve got a little invertec 200 (I think) air cooled TIG welder. I`m either going to rent or buy a water cooled one for when I do the cage as the duty cycle on the water cooled is low, plus I cant weld Ali with this either. Just a 3.2mm tungsten, 1.2mm A15 rod and pure argon on circa 10l/min. Does me well although if I was being critical of it the arc control could be better

Only a quick update I'm afraid. Manage to spend about 6 hrs on the car yesterday as I'm a family do. The rear of the cage is almost complete, bar the harness bars.

IMAG0750.jpg

IMAG0752.jpg

Forgot this pic, the main hoop brace is complete. I've attached it to the tunnel as it gives more room behind the seats than if I had gone corner to corner. I've checked with various people and it still conforms to msa regs

IMAG0746.jpg

It needs the harness bars adding and some final trimming around the main hoop once the welds for the other joint bars are in but its another big piece of the puzzle done.

I hope to add the roof bars in this week and measure up the gutted doors so I can cad up the door bars and get them bent. Then ill actually have to start welding the damn thing![emoji3]

So as usual its been a while since my last update. Work has been royally getting in the way of any decent progress. I`ve had a few intermittant saturdays and evenings that I`ve been able to work on the cage, combined I`ve got alot done and the welding has begun

I got the triangulation bars installed that tie into the strut tops and got the front structure welded. It was a bit of a faff as the header bar tucks into the top of the windscreen surround but its a nice near solution

IMAG0786.jpg

IMAG0789.jpg

IMAG0788.jpg

I also measured, in a very precise manner, using a combo of string, digital protractors and an assortment of rulers, the angles and lengths of my door bars, drew them up in cad and got them bent. They turned out spot on and I`m proper happy with them

IMAG0824.jpg

I then spent a very long time getting the to match up side to side, both in angle and with the vertical tubes

IMAG0825.jpg

IMAG0827.jpg

Still alot of welding to do and a few pics missing, the doors are gutted and now weigh around 6.5kg, still alot but the work left to remove g`s isnt worth it at the moment

Hoepfully alot more progress this weekend and I wont leave it so long between updates next time

Poly bushes are coming and the cage will provide all the stiffness I need. Got a bit of seam welding to do too. I also picked up my clutch set up when I was in the state's last week. Its a thing of beauty and ill get some pics up later

So..... I`ll just leave this here

IMAG0833.jpg

Clutch porn!! Picked this kit up in the states on my recent trip, Titan Motorsport were massively helpful in sorting out the hybrid kit and had it sent to the hotel ready for me to pick up. Very simple and hassle free, plus a damn site cheaper than getting the same set up in this country. It should also handle everything I throw at it. Just need to sort out the concentric hydraulic release bearing and get the spacer machined up when I have my engine

It was a bit more slow and steady progress over the weekend, welding all the door bars took way longer than planned, getting in behind places meant a half out of moving the cage in a very limited space (with the aid of ratchet straps) all to weld about 10mm of seam and then have to move it again. Got there in the end tho, behind the a piller was the biggest pita

IMAG0838.jpg

IMAG0835.jpg

I`m getting some sheet bent up this week for the gussets which should allow me to crack on with the cage this weekend

Titan Motorsport!? They made some evil Supras as i'm sure you know. On that note is it a 2JZ going in? ;) Awesome work man, admiring your fabrication skills big time!

Yeah they made some savagely quick supra`s, have you seen the Ekanoo Racing Supra, that thing is mental!

No 2JZ, or even 1JZ, here I`m afraid. All will be revealed soon!
