Great work and fantastic numbers.....why arent more people using merc chargers?!
I suppose because most people don't have the means/abilities to fabricate parts.

I bought my supercharger as a complete kit. I was quite happy to strip parts off and bolt new parts on, but if I'd been required to actually make parts I would never have started.

It not an m62.....it's a merc m65 supercharger......same as m45 but with a different case.

Where does M65 come from then? Mercedes did M45 chargers and M62 chargers depending on the model, but from the digging I did they call them M45 and M62, no mention of 65 that I can find.
The number in the name relates to the volume, so if it's the same internally as an M45 then it is an M45. If it's something different (i.e. bigger) then I'd be interested to know what cars it came on etc as it might be a better bet than the smaller Merc chargers

Thanks for the kind comments folks :)

This link may explain the m45 / m65 saga as it does seem to cause some confusion......but nevertheless, this charger is definatley not a 45 or a 62 and everything I've read suggests it is refered to as an eaton m65 from a merc slk.

http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r170-slk-class/1658531-difference-between-supercharger-slk200-slk230.html#/forumsite/20548/topics/1658531

The customer supplied the intercooler so I'm not entirely sure where it came from but it's height had to be shortened and the re-welded to fit in the car.

I'm sure some blyton track day footage will be avalible soon.

If anyone wants further information, please don't hesitate to get in touch through my facebook page.....I can take on full supercharger projects (I'm just about to start another but this time on a zetec) or I can just help with the odd bit of fabrication or machining.

That's a great link, thanks!! I've been intrigued by the Merc chargers for a while but even the Merc forums seemed to be a bit unclear about which charger was which etc. I have to admit I think this is a really good way forward, there are lots of the chargers around and they are relatively cheap as well. They aren't difficult to rebuild ... and if you're rebuilding you may as well port them a bit to get some more power!!#

Will watch this with interest, keep up the good work!!

Cheers - had a closer look on the desktop and it seems to say Toyosports on the top, checked their website and they only have side feed ICs. But eBay is another matter! Time to start looking in to hard pipes.

Apologies if this breaks any forum rules.

I'm seriously considering buying an mx5 with the intention of using as a template to make bespoke supercharger kits similar to the one I made for the kitcar at the start of this thread.

The kit would consist of;

A modified and refurbished Eaton M65 supercharger (same as the kitcar installation).

Smaller supercharger pulley

Inlet with a pre-charger throttle body - Customer to connect up their own air filter

Outlet plenum - Customer to connect onto their own intercooler

BMW mini bypass valve

Mounting brackets, idle pulley, tensioner and belt.

I'm thinking of selling the above kits in the region of ÂŁ1100 with an envisaged availability date of Jan 2017. These kits would get you up to this stage (ready for you to connect boost pipes and air filter);

Is the above something people would be interested in or am I barking up the wrong tree? Nothing is set in stone yet, and I'm not in a position to take orders just yet....I'm just trying to get a feel for the interest.

You're certainly breaking some rules here, but over on mighty5s.com you can post freely ;)
Looks like an interesting package, I'm sure you'd have some interest as the only option currently is the tr lane kit which can be hit and miss from what I've read.
If you're going to the trouble of making a kit it might be worth considering the m62 charger which is larger so gives the option to run either well within its capabilities at around 200bhp (approaching the limit of the 65) or be pushed towards 300 which is beyond the reach of the m45 or m65 and more comparable to most turbo builds. I'm sure that would be very popular. There are a few guys on here running them.

I think the choice of blower is likely to be dictated by price and availability. If you can significantly lower the price of entry for people who - like most of us - have no facility to fabricate parts, then I don't think folk will be put off by fretting that there are bigger or more capable superchargers out there.

Beautiful looking kit. I think most people will struggle to pay that amount of money when. You can buy a full mounting kit with blanking plates and tensioner for ÂŁ350 plus a mini charger for ÂŁ300 and throttle body for ÂŁ30. Sadly people who own a car worth ÂŁ1000 will struggle to justify the price of your kit. Just my opinion. Wish I could that outlet is so nice

Not sure that's so true anymore. Skuzzle has several car in a week for turbo or Throttle body builds and the invoices for these are well over ÂŁ1k.

Agreed, I thought it sounded pretty reasonable for a well designed kit.

Sorry if I came across a bit negative. As I said your kit does look lovely Just a bit heavy for my pockets (sadly) I'll probably go down the cheap option and then regret it and buy a better one in time Good luck

by the pictures it looks like the housing is much shorter overall, so when coupled with a car with abs, may actually fit!

i'd say go for it, showing an engine bay with the charger in and chucking that on facebook will get some attention, of course you'll have the odd person wanting to do it for ÂŁ3.50 but for most people a kit with a charger saves huge headaches if you can't fabricate yourself.

Cheers for the input folks. I'm trying to be sensitive here so as not to break any of the forum rules......I'm going to enquire about becoming a trade member once things get moving and I have the kits for sale.........I also plan on offering discounts to the club in exchange for the help and feedback I've received - If anything I do write breaks forum rules, I would be most appreciative if the offending words were deleted by admin / mods instead of the entire topic.

Just to pick up on a couple of points raised so far;

The M62 is a good option for chargers, and I do these for zetecs - http://www.mx5nutz.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=226793&hl= however the chargers are a lot harder to find in good condition and cost 2 or 3 times as much as the Eaton M65.

My plan was to do the kits for the mk1 MX5's, but I'm led to believe there are some differences between the 1.6 and 1.8 engines which could effect the supercharger kit.....as such, which would be the best choice engine to do the kits for?

Regards the costs of ÂŁ1100 for the kits, I can be quite open about my costing because I'm sure people could work it out for themselves anyway;

around ÂŁ150 for the charger

ÂŁ13 for the charger bearing grease

ÂŁ20 for the charger oil

ÂŁ5 for the charger sealant

ÂŁ80 for the smaller charger drive pulley

ÂŁ40 for the bypass valve

ÂŁ20 bypass hose

ÂŁ20 for the precharger TB

ÂŁ17 for the belt tensioner pulley

ÂŁ10 for the idle pulley

ÂŁ12 for the pulley belt

ÂŁ387 parts

Aluminium and steel = around ÂŁ220

sundry and cons = ÂŁ30

Total raw material cost = ÂŁ637.00

There is approximately 100 hours of machining, fabricating etc....which goes every supercharger....nothing is CNC'd, everything comes off manually operated machines by myself. This equates to around ÂŁ4.63 per hour for my time to put these kits together.

Basically, these superchargers are going to be 'fill-in' work when I'm quiet between other RedSeven projects. I'm probably going to build the kits in batches of 5 in an effort to reduce the average build time....and then sell them on forums and ebay once all 5 kits are complete. Depending on how well they sell and general feedback will depend on whether or not I make further batches.

The idea of having a template car is to run / test the chargers before selling each kit. The customer could even see it running on the car before buying.

If the charger goes tighter to the engine, it also has to be raised to clear the exhaust manifold which would probably put it above the bonnet line (cut out in bonnet required) - The SR2 customer wanted to keep everything under the bonnet and so there is only 10mm or so clearance between the top of the charger and the bonnet underside, however they still had to have a cut-out in the side of the bonnet to clear the charger outlet.

Yes there is as my install using the same M65 unit has a smaller footprint.
