I've not driven this much recently and considered selling or breaking it to buy a new project. Whenever I take it out though it puts a smile on my face. It's so smelly, noisy and uncomfortable but you're so connected to the art of driving it. It's physical, engaging analogue work. It's fantastic. Out and about a few weeks ago I came across a garage with an old phonebox, petrol pump and lots of retro signs. I thought it was worth a snap.

I took my youngest out to buy charcoal for the BBQ - we took the hardtop off which made her giggle when the wind blew her hair about.

I took middle son out to buy a strimmer. We wore our '80s sunglasses because that's how you roll when you're super dope (or 6). He shouted at me to go faster.

My Mum and Dad visited and they came in my Dad's MX5. It coincided with the Sussex Brekkie meet so I took him along to that. He was a bit disappointed by all the cars and thought the breakfast wasn't very good. Oh hang on, that wasn't him.

It had the annual sidelights and number plate day (MOT). Thanks to M@rtin for helping with that. :)

Anyway, recently I got some time to have some car days. i.e. faffing doing some overdue jobs. I have a very long list of stuff that needs doing. It gets prioritised by safety and then usually stuff that's necessary for the next track day. One day I'll catch up and do all the nice finishing things that are half done (eg finish cutting the ugly mess of the hacked bracing off the underneath of my bonnet) but time is always very tight. I'm always just glad to get a few hours to myself to do the necessary jobs to have it ready for it's next track event.

First job was a passenger footrest as I've noticed it's really uncomfortable to passenger in as there's nowhere to brace your legs. The footrest is a cheap (and light) folded aluminium RallyeDesign one. I sprayed it with black textured non-slip truck-bed liner though which I think has made it look miles better. It's fitted with stainless M6 button heads in rivnuts

Lst time out on track at Brands Hatch the brakes felt awful. I knew the fluid was crap Halfords suff as I was only part way though the process of removing the Mk1 servo and compensator, but the pads felt awful too - no bite and no feel. I took the pads (Axis Ultimates) out and they looked like this. No wonder they felt so bad!

Replacements are CL RC6 for which I had fantastic service from Fortuna when ordering.

I've finally remade the rear brake line and fitted the bias-valve too.

My able assistant helped me to flush the fluid with Superblue and bleed the brakes.

I've just been out to bed the RC6s in and they're eye-popping. Can't wait to get them on track with the new sticky tyres. Bring on the track time at Japfest2. B)

Nice work Ste and where is the garage mate?

I wouldn't sell it either. Think you would get a similar experience if you ever drove the corns mate. That is raw, noisy and uncompromising but for a weekend blat great fun.

Have to do that curry soon.

With thanks to 'tropical' I bought another MX5Parts 440mm de-cat. I've snapped 5 of these and stopped using them because they're only 2" bore. However, desperate to get my exhaust sound levels down for Japfest2 and struggling to get a custom system made in time this may be my only hope.

The Yoko AO48s were on their last legs so I needed new tyres. I considered Yokos again, but was hearing good things about the 'new' Avon ZZRs so ordered a set of 195/50/15s. Squeezing 4 tyres into an MX5 is always fun.

As usual I went to Owen Garages in Haywards Heath as Olly there is a superstar. He always takes loads of care with my wheels. He also lets me use his ramp so I changed my oil and filter and fitted the de-cat too.

First job for today was to change the gear gaitor rubber as the old one had perished. Does anyone else get through one of these every 12 months? Annoyingly I couldn't get a genuine OEM Mazda one so had to settle for an IL Motorsport one. Quality seems OK.

Today I got a few hours free so I painted some detail parts I'd wanted to do for ages. The mirror mounts and door handles stood out as being the only shiny silver parts on the car so they needed to become satin black. The wiper arms were looking a little tired too so they also got a coat of satin black.

Luckily I got everything painted, dried and fitted before the rain started.

I also managed to make and fit an evolution of my door card design. This is version 3.

That pic also shows the temporary #Japfest2 dash sticker I've fitted so it shows on the in-car track video.

Last thing for the day was a custom rad panel. As I don't have a bonnet-catch any more the standard one and pretty much all aftermarket ones are useless.

See you all on Sunday! :)
