Yoo, thought I'd better get this started while I had the chance! Fairly new to the MX5 Game. I'll start with a quick run down of how I got here...

Been building a no expense spared Honda CRX track car from the ground up since 2009.

Got a Daihatsu Charade to run around in, ended up making a few tweaks. Epic car! :

IMG_00111.jpg

Decided to get something more respectable after a year so I bought a Mk4 Golf TDI. No pics lol!

After running around in that for a couple years I was bored.

I decided i wanted something that was small, Japanese and most importantly fun. Hmmmm..

So I ended up with this :

'89 1.6 Eunos.

Unfortunately due to unforeseen insurance issues (dont ask) I had to sell it after only 2 weeks :( But it was an awesome 2 weeks!! So the Golf remained on daily duties.

I was straight on the hunt for an insurance suitable replacement. Then I spotted one on here which was just down the road from me and looked to be in awesome condition. However the price was double what I had planned to spend on my 'cheap runaround'.

I went to have a look and fell in love. A deposit was paid, money was borrowed and dark thoughts began to enter my head regarding the ongoing Honda struggle.... I picked up the MX5 the following week. This was back in April this year.

Unfortunately I failed to get decent pics of the car when I first got it..... But here it is.

It had a few small things done to it already:
-Mazdaspeed Exhaust
-Unknown JDM y0 Coilovers
-Drivers seat foamectomy
-14 Degree Timing Mod
-Ferodo DS2500 Front Brake Pads

It was epic. Even better than the Blue 1.6 I had, I was loving it. Although it wasn't entirely practical as a daily driver....
Soon it became apparent that to pay off the debt for the MX5 I would need a lump of money sharpish. So I'd have to sell the golf. Or would I?

Fact was, I was sick to the back teeth of chucking money and time into the inanimate Honda shell. The car I had dreamed up at 18 was now seriously lacking appeal at the age of 22. I no longer had the motivation to spend my weekends messing about with the tiny dull details of the build (and there seemed to be thousands of 'em). I was also was really beginning to hate shelling out ÂŁ100s on inane parts while never really getting closer to the end result. Worst of all, I didn't even really want to achieve the end result anymore... It would be highly strung, super impractical, probably unreliable with lack of parts support and eurghhh FWD...

The more I drove the 5, the more my interest in the Honda faded.

I'm into cars cos I like driving them. I'd attempted to build a top spec race car despite never having done a single track day. I'd fallen into the trap of looking at mags and blogs and attempting to copy the cheque book builds that you see all the time. And in the 4 years I'd spent chasing that dream, pouring blood, sweat, tears and thousands of pounds into it. I'd lost sight of what cars are all about...DRIVING!

And I was having more fun driving the 5 than any car I'd ever owned.

So to cut an already long story short. The decision was made to flog the Honda and associated clutter. The Golf would stay on daily duty. And the 5 would become the 'project car' :D One good thing about the CRX build is that I learned a huge amount from it. Not just mechanics wise but also how to approach a 'project'. This was going to be very different.

The Plan-
-Build an effective car for DRIVING. Road, track, drift, autosolo, hill climb, whatever, I want to have a go :p
- Make it look half decent
-Forget about BHP
-Don't spend huuuuge amounts of money
-Have fun :)

Sorry about the uber long intro but I thought it was an important part of my 5 adventure. With that out of the way the thread can start properly, when I'm not so tired :p

Til next time....

PS Jeeeez these iPhone pics are terrible! Will have to sort a decent camera lol.

Better try and get this up to date!

I had said that I wouldn't modify anything on the car until I'd done a trackday. That didn't last long.

But first came maintenance. Did a full service and underseal.

2F12C0D2-093B-404C-BCAB-821560E55610-442

Then made a few cosmetic tweaks:
-Smaller Plates
-Front tow strap
-OEM front lip
-Debadge
-De colour coded the reflectors
-Rota Slipstreams (off of the crx)
-Buddyclub wheel nuts

It was around this time I noticed that Driftworks did finance...

I was happy with it at this point and got on with driving it and went to a few shows and various jollies. Shameful lack of quality/quantity of pics continues...

And at last the first trackday was booked for 10th June at Keevil Airfield :D

Track time!

I went to Keevil and had an absolute blast. It was my first ever trackday so I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but I loved every minute and was definitely bitten by the bug. (Which was lucky seen as I'd started building a track car :p)

The car performed faultlessly and I was so impressed with its ability. Through the corners only the caterham type cars seemed to be able to go quicker. The straights aren't the mx5s strong point but still I went past a number of cars I wouldn't have expected. The list includes a couple of 200sx, a scooby and all manner of bmws (only the M3s were quicker but only just!) It was awesome.

The only issue I had was with the tyres. T1Rs don't hold up too well on track. Lots of squirmy, squealy sliding begins to occur after a few laps. The brakes got pretty spongy by the end of the day aswell.

I came away with some notes:
-MX5s are epic
-T1Rs are shite
-No roll over protection is slightly unnerving
-I need more seat time!

Typically I only have 1 crappy picture from the day. A stationary one at that. Next to my mates 200bhp Civic.

C5D00A15-B374-4AF4-803D-A9F5EDC4A9D5-442

On return to the workshop I began the task of improving the car.

A roll bar was top priority as I really didn't fancy being upside down without one. I ordered a TR Lane TD bar as its about the tallest one you can get whilst retaining a roof. I'm 6'3 so need all the space I can get!

6D614874-B43C-43C7-9232-FA052ADEA30F-139

You may also notice in that pic a different seat has made its way into the cockpit. I had a Buddyclub seat and D2 FIA harness left over from the CRX so they went in with the help of JB Fab rails and a TR Lane harness bar.

E16203E2-0505-4CF3-B468-B788B2E5FD80-442

I needed a bit more room so I removed the centre console and made some race door handles :p

E1C8760C-87B9-41C2-AD54-23FB047812B0-442

I also got a 330mm steering wheel and D1 Spec quick release. Going to replace the wheel with a Personal Grinta soon. Will also look into getting a shorter hub as the wheel is a little too close for my liking.

DEE00A7B-6EF0-4C14-9D78-18329985B48A-442

I removed the radio and made a carbon blanking panel. Going to relocate the window switches onto this panel at some point.

BDBE476F-299F-4D41-BEBB-322AAFF9CAD7-442

There were a few mechanical issues that needed addressing after the trackday....

There was a loud exhaust rattle from underneath. I assumed that my cheapy decat had blown to bits so I bought an unsilenced one. However the problem turned out to be a loose heat shield. I fitted the new decat anyway (Extra ground clearance, more noise :p) And temp repaired the heat shield as a new manifold is among future plans.

EC01DDF1-5866-4683-8607-ADF747B420F6-442

The brakes felt awful. All the components were pretty shot so it was time for a refresh.

Purchased-
-Yellowstuff front pads
-Blueprint rear pads
-Blueprint discs all round
-ATE Super Blue fluid

Before:

EC9DE7A2-8171-4B6A-AE70-525A8190C741-442

During:

After:

006ADC43-31B6-4275-AE1B-E1C385C6339F-442

I decided that I'd get braided lines in the near future so I didn't bother with the SuperBlue fluid. After a bleed through with normal DOT 4 the brakes felt 100% better. Now that they're bedded in I can definitely say i prefer this setup to the previous one (Ferodo DS2500)

Next on the list was my faulty radiator fan which had stopped working. Fan and relay tested ok so it was time to replace this little bugger:

62087D9C-8EDE-48A0-BF77-21981B1FDCC4-442

It wasn't as bad a job as the Internet had led me to believe. I had a working fan again :)

The T1Rs still had a fair bit of life in them so I decided they could stay. For now...

With the car back up together the next trackday was booked. Keevil again, September 14th :) This weekend!

That brings us up to now then! Before the weekend I've got an alloy rad with slim fan to fit. Plus a few other small tweaks which I'll post over the next couple days. Excited :)

In other new I took some photos with a proper camera the other day  So I'll post them up ASAP!

hello james good work on the 5, honda tunning is a stupidly expensive business, my brother has been building a k20 car now for 3 years and its cost him sooo much money, he could have bout a 911 by now, lol, stupid honda
Cheers. Yeah it does get silly, especially with Ks. I could have actually bought a tidy E46 M3 with all the money I spent lol. Oh well its all good fun :p

#10 ·
Boring text based update begin!

Fitted my alloy rad from MX5Dans group buy on Friday night. Risky doing that sorta thing the night before a track day but I couldn't resist. My old rad had gone a dodgy shade of brown with small cracks visible in places so was definitely on its way out! Ive refitted the OEM fan for now but I have a slim one to go on when I get a chance. Also discovered that my water pump has a very slight leak so pump and belt change is on the cards.

I removed more air con gubbins aswell. All that remains now is the compressor because I've lost my new p/s belt...

Saturday morning we were off to Keevil for some more track fun. Noise level had gone from 81db with silenced decat to 94db unsilenced. A bigger rise than expected but still within limits so we were good to go.

Luckily it stayed dry all day and an awesome time was had. I felt a lot quicker and smoother this time and even though I had a passenger all day the lil MX had no dramas embarrassing a variety of 'superior' cars. S1 Elise's and a TVR being the highlights for me :)

It really is a beast through the corners and my mate was convinced that bar a couple of Ariel Atoms and the odd Caterham there was nothing quicker through the twisty parts. I was inclined to agree :p Just a shame about the straight bits in between. I imagine an FI 5 must be an absolute weapon on track! I like being the underdog though!

The seat and harness made a big difference, I felt as if I was part of the car rather than just sat in it. Unlike my mate flying about in the passenger seat lol. Steering wheel is definitely too close, a bit uncomfortable on the tighter corners so short hub is required.

New brakes performed well. Much more feel than the old setup. I was getting some sponginess towards the end of the longer sessions but I'm sure that's down to the fluid. However the day took its toll and at at the end of my last session a nasty grinding noise became apparent. Somehow I'd gone through a new set of rear pads in a day....So that was the end of the new rear discs aswell and of course the end of my day. The EBC fronts had worn about 50%.

I had checked the car over just before lunch and there seemed to be a good amount of life left in the brakes at that point. I guess that as I got quicker in the afternoon, braking later and harder, the rear pads just couldn't hack it. Completely unexpected though. Spare pads will be added to the trackday packing list!

Surprisingly the Toyos survived well and could probably do another day, the key was to keep the session times down to 10-15 min to keep them from melting.... I've got my eye on some AD08s though ;) Hopefully they will improve turn in, which is one place I felt the car was lacking.

So the to do list now includes:

-Rear discs with Yellowstuff pads
-Timing belt and water pump
-Service inc transmission oil change
-Slim fan
-Bleed brakes with Super Blue, keeping the OEM hoses for now.
-New rear alignment bolts and re do tracking. Just got some lovely new Supertracker laser kit at work :)

The to buy list (long term-ish) includes:
-'Race' mirrors, because my RH lens keeps falling out and they're cheaper and better looking than oem.
-Yokohama AD08
-Oil and coolant temp gauges, I'm not sure the OEM equipment tells the full story..
-Short steering hub
-Personal Grinta steering wheel, just because...

And last but definitely not least...
-More track time!

I'll end this instalment with a pair of horrific Instagram pics I took yesterday :p Hopefully some more media will surface at some point... Also I have begun dropping hints that a GoPro would be a lovely idea for a Birthday/Christmas present :D

TL;DR : Went on a trackday, irritated a TVR owner, killed my new brakes :p

Today the rear brakes will be sorted so I can drive it again :)

Cars developed an annoying HLA tick that I'm hoping is down to lack of use. Hopefully an engine flush and oil change will cure it!

Going to Japshow at Pod at the weekend, I've heard there's a handling comp on the Sunday so I may have a go at that depending on how wooly my head is from the Saturday night :p

Long time no update... Maybe because not a lot has happened since September.

Took my eye off the ball a bit over winter.

Couple of bits done:

NRG Short Boss - Lot's more room now, however the horn contact broke up after a couple hours driving so horn is currently out of action...

DSCN06111.jpg

The eagle-eyed amongst you may be able to pick out from that blurry mess above that I've also tidied up the centre console delete.

Used a switch panel from OMGPham and a parcel shelf carpet cut to his template. Really pleased with how it turned out.

Replaced the shift gaiters and turret oil at the same time. They were shagged and this made a nice difference to the feel of the gear change.

So yeah not a lot happening there at the end of 2013...

On to this year then!

Long winter nights browsing various forums and blogs had started to sew the seed of POWAHHH!

Thoughts of turbos, superchargers and ITBs came and went at regular intervals. I lost sight of the original plan in a haze of youtube videos and build threads. Luckily I soon snapped out of it when dates for 2014's events started to appear :D

Sadly I only managed to get two trackdays in last year, I ended up spending a bit more on the car than expected but at least I've got it somewhere near where I want it.

Event wise for this year I'm signing up to the ASWMC Autosolo Championship which I'm mega excited about. From what I've heard autosolo is one of the best bang for your buck motorsport events out there. Cheap entry, a day driving on the limit and an element of competition make it very appealing :)

Going to aim to do a normal trackday every 2 or 3 months and will make the most of the track sessions available at the various shows throughout the year. Japfest, BHP Show, Trax etc...

I also have a shed load (literally) of 14" wheels with tyres eagerly awaiting death. Definitely keen for a drift day or two...

Anywho, this wouldn't be a build thread without any 'building', so of course there are plans for the car!

Boring Stuff :
-Happy New Year Service wooo
-New tyres, either AD08 or NS2R
-Re-do the tracking with a more track orientated set up
-Lighten OEM flywheel, new clutch, new rear main
-Remove AC compressor
-Fit slim rad fan
-NEW ROOF GODDAMN YOU RELENTLESS RAINFALL!
-Remove mould from all soggy crevices (see above)

Gay Stuff, ie things I don't really need but can't help having a massive WANT for:
-Ducktail
-Personal 330mm Steering Wheel
-Stainless mani
-Maybe, just maybeeee 15x7 Grids. Maybe.

Hopefully me and the wagon are guna have good year!

Updates soon... For now, have a picture of aforementioned wagon lurking on aforementioned long winter night. Cheers!

Great direction this is going. Reminds me of the stage mine was at after owning it for a similar length of time that you've owned this. Looks bloody similar too!
Thanks ste, your build is a huge inspiration.

Biscuit, I originally made the intake to try and help free up the top end of the rev range. There's a nice increase in noise but I don't think it makes a major performance difference. Despite that, I'm sure it's better to be getting cool air from the scuttle rather than hot air from the engine bay. The top end still feels a little 'choked'. I'm hoping the lightened flywheel will help to create a more eager engine character similar to the 1.6.

#16 ·
Very nice, I like what you've done so far! Ashame about the CRX that looked lovely but I can see why you'd done it. What was it you used for the scoop on the scuttle panel? Any more pics of the intake setup? I'd like to do something similar on mine :)

#17 ·
Thanks mate.

There's no scoop on the scuttle just the standard rain cover which I had to trim. Legend has it that the entire scuttle on an MX5 is a high pressure area being force fed cool air from above the bonnet.

I cut a hole in the bulkhead and then tiger sealed a random plastic pipe flange thing into it (I'd had it lying around for years thinking it would come in handy. No idea what it is or where it came from though lol). Then just some reinforced heater ducting off ebay roughly 70mm which fitted onto the flange and air box perfectly. If I was to do the job again I'd probably relocate the washer bottle to allow a straighter path for the ducting. Not sure it would make any real world difference though.

Still haven't done a huge amount on the car bar boring maintenance etc.

But, there is a pretty cool update looming. Clue:They're round and there's four of them. Just need to finish off the Toyo's on the Slips ;)

More exciting however, is that the events season is beginning!

Went over to Skuzzle this morning for the Nutz Dyno Day. Was a really cool day, lots of awesome machinery and lovely weather.

So what were the scores on the doors? Well my original prediction was 120 at the fly. When I found out that power would be measured at the wheels I realised my prediction would be way off. Or maybe not....

76f2e3ac1996159af957948ba607a0d6.jpg

Really really happy with the result. When I left this afternoon it was still top of the board for N/A Mk1s. That may have changed though :p It would seem I've got a good one!

The fun continues tomorrow with my first ever autosolo with BMC at Mendip Raceway. I don't think the weather will be as kind to us as it was today. Looking forward to it, will also be using the GoPro in anger for the first time so stay tuned for some (probably very boring) vids :D

Well first autosolo done and what an epic day! Conditions were pretty terrible but I had an awesome time.

The course was set on a stock-car oval/figure of 8. This meant solid walls, zero run off and plenty of oil, coolant and god knows what all over the track just waiting to be washed around by the relentless rain.

I was properly nervous before my first run on the first test. I started feebly, pottered round and tried to learn the course Even at slow pace it was immediately obvious that there was absolutely no grip in places. The walls constantly looming in my peripheral vision.

Second run, I thought fuck it, let's go for it. I went balls out, dramatically and erratically fish tailing and under-steering round the course. Miraculously I made it to the last corner where I ended up mid epic drift (not entirely by choice I might add). I kept my foot in, but of course it wasn't long before I was facing the wrong way. The spin scared me a bit, I really didn't fancy bouncing my car off any of the waiting walls. I was forced to reconsider my approach.

Autosolo seems very different to track driving in that there is an element of accuracy and finesse required which isn't always the case on track (with my limited experience and talent at least).

Second test was the reverse of the first. This time I decided to aim for smoothness. Make the most of the limited grip, keep the car in a straight(ish) line and use the short straight sections to gain speed. I felt a lot better, and although I didn't beat my fastest time from the first test, I was far more consistent over the three attempts.

Third test was an all new layout. A complete loop followed by a complete figure of 8, with an almost constant slalom through the cones. Much longer straight sections meant more speeeeed! Gentle sighting lap out the way, I went for it once more. I felt really good on the last test despite the sideways torrential rain which was hammering the track at this point. I posted a couple of quick times but skimmed a cone on the last run resulting in a 5s penalty.

Needless to say, the car was faultless all day despite my constant ham-fisted inputs and plenty of limiter bashing (it's what the fast guys were doing ok? Monkey see, monkey do). On a random side note, incredibly, the trusty Toyos STILL haven't died!

So, to the results! 2nd in class (out of 3 runners lol). 24th overall, out of 40ish runners. More than happy with that considering it was my first event and conditions were far from ideal. Had I not hit the cone on the last run I would have been top 20!

The course was described to me as a baptism of fire by one of the more experienced guys there, owing to the conditions and the layout. I felt pretty intimidated by the thought of beating my car off the wall, so I'm looking forward to having a go at a more typical event at a more open location and improving my driving. Next one is Kemble 30th March.

I would strongly recommend autosolo to anyone despite the freezing temps and the mud and the horrendous rain. Cheap to enter and relatively easy on the car. It was really fun to push the limits in that environment. Everyone was really friendly and the element of competition is something that you'll never really get at a track day. I also like the fact that the MX5 is very very capable in this discipline. In fact the overall winner of the event was driving one, so there's no excuses!

Got some nice pics from the event. I failed to get any GoPro footage because in between driving and marshalling I was more interested in hiding from the elements, drying off and warming up than messing about with the camera. Kicking myself a bit now though. At least I've got these pics :)

Well done for getting out there and giving it a go mate, looks like fun (apart from the cold bit!) :)
Yeah was brilliant fun! Thought it might be a bit tame after driving on track but the tight confines of the course made it pretty intense. There's no looooong straights for us MX5 drivers to take a breather haha.

Is the hood still properly functional with the roll bar?! Great build and introduction to!
Cheers! Yeah the hood still works fine apart from the window is hard to unzip. Been told that a cable tie or similar through the zipper would help but my roofs so fooked I just don't bother unzipping it.

Went up the garage and did a bit today.

Changed the oil and finally removed my AC compressor.

Then in an incredible display of old age I raised the car 15mm and set the HSDs to full softness. The idea was to get rid of some of the mega natural camber I had due to lowz. The next job is new TREs and alignment bolts before laser alignment so this should help out in that respect.

To celebrate I took a particularly gnarly B-road route home and I have to say, the cars real-world road holding ability has been significantly improved! The cars lost a little form but gained a shed-load of function.

After alignment it's time for the new wheels :D

I fitted a lovely fresh set of 195/50/15 Vredestein Sportrac 5 to them today. The wheels are WedsSport SA90. Little preview:

Also took a few cliche fish-eye interior shots with the GoPro.

interior looks so good. has the centre console just been removed and the console blanked off. Looks great
Thanks mate, just needs a decent steering wheel and I'll be happy.

Yeah centre console removed completely then used a window switch plate from OMGPham on here. The carpet in the centre is the parcel shelf carpet cut to shape.

Update time!

Attached the new wheels and tyres on Saturday. Fitted new track rod ends and alignment bolts at the same time. Then got the wheel alignment sorted. I used the laser kit at work and set it to some 'fast road' (I hate that term) settings I found on the internet. Thankfully the ride height raise succeeded in allowing me to dial out much of the silly camber I had before. Now running -2.5 on the rear and -0.5 on the front.

IMG_1409.jpg

First impressions where very good but the real test would be the next day at an autosolo in Kemble. I spent most of Saturday afternoon 'bedding in' the tyres on the roads of Wiltshire.

Early start on Sunday, 04:30 in winter time and it was off to Kemble Airfield for the next round of the ASWMC Autosolo Championship.

Absolutely brilliant day was had. Weather was beautiful and the courses were huge amounts of fun. The tests were a lot more open than at Mendips, speeds were higher and there was actually run off available too. So I was able to fully concentrate on the task at hand.

There were four tests with three runs on each. I tried to do one gentle sighting run and then two flyers. I made a few silly mistakes on the flyers that cost me but when all was said and done I managed 17th overall out of 40 so an improvement on last time! I know I can iron out the mistakes and improve further!

Car was brilliant all day, it handles superbly on the new set up. Really can't fault it. The power steering struggled at times. The fluid boiled over on a couple of runs. American autocrosser's swear by Redline P/S fluid so I'm gunna give that a go.

Anyway less waffle more pics. Here's a couple of static pics that the mrs took. They give you a good look at the new rimmage. Action shots too follow.

Cheers :)

Also got a GoPro vid! Unfortunately technical issues meant I could only capture one run which isn't particularly interesting but it gives you an idea. My camera positioning leaves a lot to be desired aswell lol! For best results add HD!

PS If anyone's reading this thinking yeah I wanna give that autosolo lark a go please don't hesitate to PM me for more details. There's very little info around about how to get involved and it was more luck than judgement that I managed to get entered in this particular series at all. If you're in the south/southwest it's ideal!
