Here's my previous project:

Panda Racing No.1

A year after selling it, and owning 5 cars in the interim I decided another MX5 would be a suitable replacement car to get me to the train station and back. Last week I therefore found myself schlepping around the M25 to Essex in the rain to look at a sorry looking 1.8 incorrectly advertised as a V-Spec that I hoped was actually an S-Special.

I collected it and after inflating the tyres (the rears were on 11 and 13psi) I set off home. It doesn't have the 112mph limiter my 1.6 had. It runs out of legs at 122mph though (speedo and TomTom in agreement at that part of the dial). It's woefully underpowered and it feels quite baggy compared to my last one. Remind me, what is it I like about these cars again?
Image

I'd say the 1.8 engine isn't as sweet as the 1.6. Where the 1.6 enjoys being wrung out, the 1.8 prefers to make progress on the slightly higher torque it produces and you gain nothing from screwing the last 500rpm out of it. I'm hoping the more manly 1.8 drivetrain will last better on track than my 1.6 did though as that ate clutches, brakes etc. for fun.

My journey home averaged 29 MPG. Pretty appalling for a small car of this nature, especially when my M3 would have made circa 33 for the same journey.

Anyway, Sunday I had time to give it a quick going over and evaluate what needs to be done to it. I nearly always forget to take photos of what cars are like when I get them so tend to only have the 'after' pics. So here it is on the drive in the state it arrived:

Image

Image

Paint is very tired, car has ingrained dirt and hasn't been cleaned properly in years. It will look a million times better just having some TLC and a proper clean, sorting out the number plate bracket that's fitted upside down and a few areas of the plastic front and rear bumpers that have crazed paint will get re-painted. Good points are that it appears to have no rust on the bodywork (which is why I bought it) and the hood is new and watertight.

Wheels belong to the previous owner so they'll be going back to him. Will be good to lose the oversized budget 205/50/15 tyres that are blunting the car's responses.

Popping the bonnet revealed years of dirt and grime.

Image

The whole car seems to have been neglected so its no surprise to see a filthy engine bay. Washer fluid was empty, oil was on minimum and coolant was below minimum. At least it's mainly standard without lots of shiny tat or an awful induction kit or anything. Only areas of note are a broken dipstick handle (the history for the car shows this as an advisory on its first MOT in the country) and a broken clip for the bonnet stay, meaning over time the bonnet stay has been sat on the radiator top-hose, making a small but noticeable indentation in it. I'll get a new clip and replace the hose.

Poking around it in the daylight it's in quite a strange state. It's almost as if it has just arrived at the docks. It's got all the Japanese licencing info in the windscreen still, there are random JDM stickers here and there and the interior is filthy, and unbelievably still has Japanese parking tickets and other odds and ends in it.

Here's the important sticker saying it's an S-Spec:

Image

...and the inside of the boot lid holds clues to a potential previous life as a trackday/club racer/road warrior:

Image

Anyway, as it started raining I pulled it inside to give the inside a clean and sort out:

Image

Sticking my head in the footwell to hoover it out I found this:

Image

An original JDM flare.

Image

Image

I can't decide whether to set it off for a bit of fun or to sell it. Are these rare and would there be a market for it?

Mazdaspeed gearknob fitted. Not to my taste but possibly worth a few quid to someone? Will be in the For Sale section soon.

Image

The Nardi Torino that's fitted I do like. I'm tempted to keep it 'in stock', but may well sell that on too?:

Image

Image

Image

This is the funniest thing in the entire car:

Image

A 'carbon' ashtray.
Image
Apparently it's the one Takuma Sato had fitted to his F1 car so he could have a crafty bifta during qualifying. Will be going in the For Sale section too.

A bit of CSI digging about while cleaning the inside gave further clues to what the boot stickers had hinted at. One of the stickers was the Safety21 logo. Digging about I found the rear deck fuel tank cover had been tin-snipped and beneath them, covered up very well with metallic tape was the evidence of where the rear stays of a rollbar had been mounted.

Image

Image

Image

Then looking under the floor, holes where the main hoop had mounted were visible, but there were none where the front legs would go on a 6-point cage. Therefore, I'd assume in Japan it had a Safety21 4 point rollbar.

Image

Anyway, I gave the interior a thorough clean, removed all the unnecessary stickers. Pulled the Nardi off and replaced it with my Momo. I also climbed underneath and had a look at the suspension. The rear Mazdaspeed coilovers were backed off to their softest setting and that was that. It's now much more pleasant inside and with the back a few clicks softer it drives better too.

So far I've bought some proper chairs for it and some scaffolding to protect my head in case it falls over. Today I'm going to buy some coilovers and some wheels. It'll then need a front lip, an alignment, some brakes, harnesses, a hard-top, some paint and a thorough stripping / lighten-ing. Hopefully will get it on track by November. Will be doing it as a rolling project though, commuting sideways in it everyday and seeing what it's like to live with as a daily drive.

great photos mate.

I put my Gaz coilovers on this weekend and realised the springs are longer than yours which cause the adjuster rings to clash with the top wishbone (front) and the driveshafts (back). In turn this means I cant go as low as you have!

do you know if the springs off your HSC ones are the same diameter as the Gaz ones so in theory I could use the same springs off yours on my gaz shocks?

what offset are your rotas btw?

#54 ·
My Slipstreams are the ET28 ones.

I'm surprised you're having the issues with the Gaz that you mention. My last car with Gaz fitted would have dropped to sit the frame rails on the ground had I wanted to before the collars interfered with the wishbones. Which ones do you have? Some use a spring with a 2.25" diameter bottom to fit on a standard coilover collar and then widen into a standard sized MX5 spring to fit into standard top-mounts. Other Gaz kits have bespoke topmounts to take 2.25" Motorsport springs. If you have those, Faulkners or Eibach can supply springs in practically any length and poundage and they're inexpensive.

i've just figured out where i know your roll bar from, though i was almost certain it was still in pat's garage at the weekend.
Image

i guess you managed to get up to collect it. it looks ace. glad it's gone to a good home
Cheers, my brother actually collected it for me from Pat and my Dad ferried it down to me when my folks visited last week.

#55 ·
thanks for the reply.

I am not sure on what kit it is exactly but its a gold colour and has only 1 spring which is the same length all the way up....

like I said it doesn't quite go low enough before hitting the wishbones and hitting the driveshafts.... hmmm..

the thing is the spring isnt much wider than the actual adjuster rings so either way the adjuster rings would clash before they get low enough... so i think shorter springs would be better.

#58 ·
thanks for the recommendation

just rang them but they are unable to help with finding out what springs I need but when I do find out then I can order from them

I just need to get the measurements from my springs and compare them to springs on the gaz website so that I can find out which ones will work well for me.

just don't want to mess the setup up too much.

My exhaust has increasingly become louder and louder. I popped into Owen Garages and put it up on the ramp.

Image

The culprit is a failing flexi-joint, so gases are escaping straight after the downpipe prior to any silencing. Last night I ordered a new stainless flexi. Will fit that once it arrives and hopefully the noise will go from Nova with a bean-can back to a sane level and I'll reduce my chances of death by CO poisoning.

The HSDs have now settled in and I'm becoming more and more pleased with them. I've got the rear damping up at 10/16 and even on the road that feels pretty good - still compliant but has increased the rebound bump control. Next step now I'm happy is a full alignment. Will use WIM again as I've been impressed in the past. Main aim is to dial out the current understeer it has at initial turn-in.

Have ordered a few more bits and pieces over the last week that will enable me to move on with developing the car. One item is a set of Sparco side mounts as I didn't want to pay the silly price these are new so have been bidding on cheap ones on eBay. I managed to bag a set for the driver's seat straight away but it's taken me another month to get a cheap pair for the passenger side. Once they turn up I can fit the passenger seat as I've only had the driver's seat in for the last month. Will be good to get the biggest critic of my cars (my 4 year old boy) in there for his verdict.

I've also signed up for something for next year that should mean the car gets to be used properly. More details to follow once I've proper confirmation.

Last week the postie bought this little lot:

Image

Crap iPron pic, but it's my membership to the Borough 19 Motorclub. I'll be entering the car in their sprint championship next year, in A2 (Standard Production). With that in mind I've been doing a few more jobs on the car within the confines of the limited alterations that are allowed within the regulations. If anyone's interested, Section S of the Bluebook will give you more detailed info: Section S PDF

My Rennenmetal tow hooks arrived from Texas. I've fitted them and some Tow stickers.

Previously I'd only fitted the driver's Sparco seat, so at the weekend I cut the standard humps out of the passenger side floor and started to install the passenger seat. The transmission tunnel is offset into the passenger space as the exhaust follows that side of the prop and gearbox so space is very tight. I got fed up and called it a day when my fingers got too cold, so I still need to finish it off. I need it in and secure by Sunday as I want to go along to the Goodwood Breakfast Club and the plan's to take my eldest boy with me. Will have to pull my finger out on Saturday (weather permitting) and finish it off.

Also, as per the sprint regs I applied some yellow tape to my battery earth wire. At least I felt I'd achieved one job off the list and the day wasn't a complete waste of time.

I possibly need to swap my Garage Vary front lip for a standard one as I'm not sure mine complies with next years regs. It used to - the silhouette had to remain unaltered except for below the hub line. I think for 2011 even that may not be allowed for 'standard production' though. Will be looking for a standard one to swap if that becomes the case.

My rear suspension needs to come up approx 5mm too. It's settled slightly more and is now a fraction too low. Would like the luxury of cornerweighting it, but without scales (or a level enough drive) - I'm assuming the weight bias is too rearward causing some understeer. I think if I raise the back slightly it'll bring more balance. When I'm finally happy with the height I still need to get it to WIM for an alignment too.

Last week I went to Owen Garages in Haywards Heath and Oli cut off my old perished flexi from the exhaust and fitted the nice new stainless one I'd bought.

Image

Noise is hugely reduced, I'm no longer getting gassed and the increased back-pressure has raised the torque noticeably.

Also last week I bought a new steering wheel from Juicy155 (Phill). It's a suede Momo 78 330mm - as fitted as original equipment to the Ferrari F40.

Image

It's replacing my trusty Momo Corse, that I've had for about 10 years. New V old:

Image

It arrived yesterday and I fitted it last night. I tried to get a pic fitted but I couldn't get a non-blurred one in the light. Need a tripod or a better flash. Even in the snow this morning I'm sure it shaved 1/10th off my commute.
Image

Have had a few more bits and pieces on the shopping list recently too - will update once I've fitted them and taken pics.

Got a slightly better pic of the new Momo fitted, still blurred though unfortunately. Will try to get a good one when I've done more work on the interior sorting other bits.

Image

Earlier I spent 3 hours breaking my back shovelling the snow off the drive. Firstly I took the wife's Focus out to check it was almost passable up to the main roads. I then took Panda2 out to do a quick recce for the Goodwood Breakfast Club run I thought I was doing with a few friends on Sunday. (The website says they've now cancelled it due to the weather

Had a fantastic drive, some of it pointing forwards

New Sabelt 3" harnesses:

Image

Shoulder straps fitted over harness bar on rollbar, lap belts fitted with 8.8 eyebolts.

Image

Have left the standard 3-point inertia in for now too as previously I got fed up with a harness on my commute. New harness clips in and out in minutes.

New nylon gearknob. Feels really good, should have changed it sooner.

Better pics of suede Momo:

I'm loving the wheel to be honest, it's really tactile. Feels good on these cold mornings too.

General interior shot, need to hoover.

I then made some changes to the outside, drove to a good location for pics, got my camera out and realised the battery was flat, so here's a taster from pants camera on the iPhone.

Which is reminding me of:

Cheers, should look more purposeful when I fit the door bars and strip the carpet out / re-paint the floor etc.. I wanted to really go to town lightening this one, but as I want to sprint it I have to leave loads of trim etc in as per the regs.

Jon, gearknob is just an eBay one - it's a Mk2 Escort one (M10x1.5) that I've re-tapped to M10x1.25. I'd like to tap it further actually so I can get it further onto the lever.

Have been loving this snow - had some epic roof-off drives slithering about.
Image

Image

I've now stripped the carpets and anything else out that I can within the sprint regs. The interior is more purposeful which I like. When the weather's better I plan to clean the factory sealer off and re-paint the floor better too.

Looking forward to 2011, have quite a few trackdays and sprints planned and booked so should be good.

Cheers.

I drove to a meeting at an office in Coventry again today and took my camera as I like the light in the car-park. Not sure the shots really worked - I was kind of aiming for a cinematic feel but I may have looked at them too long / I might be a bit tired. Will see how I think they look in the morning and might post some more of them then.

Image

I think I need to buy a book on photography really and learn how to use the camera properly rather than just keep twatting about with it.

Thanks everyone. Vindi, I've had the QR boss for years I'm afraid so don't have a link. It's the same as the Driftworks one - usually available on eBay for a fraction of the DW price.

Had the day off today so went for a drive out to the other side of the Downs to have a bike ride. The Hard Dog makes for a pretty good bike-rack.
