Great read, Great car. Have you got any more plans to take weight out and where did you source the brake pads from?
Cheers! I've got quite a few more plans to take more weight out - I can see about 50kg more before I have to start getting creative. Plan still remains not to compromise it for daily use though - i.e. keeping it watertight and with a working heater etc. Pads are from Driftworks - good service from them too.

Having just read the thread, great car!

There's nothing wrong with a vauxhall C20XE! I think people use a manta box to use RWD.

Could even use a C20LET. I had close to 300BHP out of mine with 320 lb torque. Standard internals, hybrid turbo, inter cooler and phase 2 chips. Reliable daily drive. Wish I still had that car!

I've often thought about this conversion in a 5.

Rich.

No worries Dan - good to see your car starting the diet journey too...

I started gutting the doors on Friday. Initail weights of the bits coming off show a conservative guesstimate of at least 15kgs of savings to come from them, although more likely to be 20kg+. That's in addition to the initial strip (doorcards, speakers etc).

I should hit the aim of 'phase 1' soon (<900kg with a heater / fully weatherproof and an MOT). I'll post a spec round-up then and list what I want from 'phase 2'...

Both things I plan to do thanks Will. Bonnet needs to be considered though, I think it's easy to remove too much weight and have the thing try to curl up at the edges due to the negative pressure over it.

I'm not sure if GRP wings are readily available? They'd be a bonus though.

Ported and skimmed '99 head and VICS inlet, It made 158bhp alledgedly. Since the power run It's also had a Racing Beat 4-1 manifold and 2.25" system, drilled airbox, Megasquirt and PAS and Aircon removed (less parasitic loss).

Also running a few aerodynamic aids - hardtop, Vary splitter, tiny wing-mirrors, lower than standard (reducing frontal area as more tyre is tucked and less 'dirty' air gets underneath) and a massive rear bumper cut to remove the huge drag from the standard parachute. That was the limiter in 5th. GPS flickered between 137 and 138.

I spent some time on Panda2 today for the first time in ages. Although I haven't done much to it for a while, I've been researching and reading lots about what the best steps were going to be to getting it back on the road and track and improving things to where I want them to be.

I've also been collecting a few bits and pieces. The most obvious lump is probably this:

A GT2560r (aka GT28r).

The engine is going to get pulled and I'll put the ported '99 head on a new bottom end. Before I do it'll get an overbore so will end up a 1.9l and will be balanced and fitted with H beam rods and forged low-comp pistons. I haven't ordered them yet as I'm still not 100% decided but I've thinking probably CP forged pistons and Eagle rods. Please shout if anyone knows a reason not to go with either of those. Reading on MiataTurbo they seem a good solid choice without breaking the bank. I'm looking at an FM manifold and downpipe too and Inconel studs and stage 8 fasteners. I've agreed to buy Mk1Salami's 550cc injectors once his new ones arrive. When everything else is finished I plan to fit a full 3" system.

Plan is for 300+ bhp which I understand should be well within reach.

With that in mind I took the bit of time I had today and stripped the exhaust system off to sell and started clearing the engine bay ready to disconnect everything, drop the coolant and pull the lump.

That's how I left it for the day. It's looking a bit sorry for itself really - it's still covered in chunks of track rubber from following cars with slicks at Spa and needs a good scrub. I decided to fit a set of my 6ULs so at least it looked a bit better while it sits waiting for surgery.

I've also been planning more additional lightness, specifically at the front to offset adding the turbo and an intercooler. Part of the plans include this Garage Vary lightweight GRP nose:

Lightweight, wings, doors and a lightened bonnet are also in the pipeline.

While Panda2's been out of action I've been running a round in a V-Spec II which is the complete end of the spectrum MX5-wise. It's comfortable inside, has a mohair roof with a heated rear screen, electric mirrors and even has good uprated speakers in the Mazda Sensory Surround speaker locations. I might weigh it - I reckon it has to be 1100kg at least.

I have to say, I didn't ever like the V-Specs and their interiors, but I saw this one and fancied something completely different to the silver car. The thing is, now i've had it a few weeks I've gone back to not liking the interior. I do appreciate the retro charm, and there's something endearing about the wooden wheel and I even find I drive it differently. I think I might sell it and get a different one that isn't a V-Spec though.
