if you need headlights then I'd spend the extra for Wipac units over the cheaper 'Autopal' brand units

for example :thumb-up:

to me ÂŁ25.85 for the 'Autopal' or ÂŁ42.99 for wipac its worth the extra (used to use Wipac, Cibie & PIAA headlamps in escort rallycars - PIAA were upwards of ÂŁ100 each so not funny if you drive up a bank  )

good headlights are worth the extra few ÂŁ's

also, something to consider is that theres many diferent quality bulbs, BUT its also worth checking the supply voltage to the headlamp as old wiring can have a high resistance that can 'dim' good bulbs

I do like this forum [emoji3] but it's annoying how other people like spending my money [emoji23]
I have the night breakers in my Audi A4, and agree that they are good!
I currently just want it to get through the MOT though, before I start treating her to gifts

Being as my 5 does around 1-2k miles a year, and mainly during the day in spring/summer, I've opted for the autopal ones. I'm not bothered about having masses of light

I bought recently Raybrigs from Rhd japan and cost me around ÂŁ140, not cheap but they are great!

I'm getting rid of my RS Active lights and want to get some new 7" rounds for the G-Ltd. Raybrig look good, but there's a new gen LED Lynx Eye light coming out soon, so I'm holding out for that before I make a final decision.

H4 Lynx Eye 7" replacement for the Landie is already available. Over ÂŁ300 a pair though.
The current Lynx Eye is old tech, I've had a whisper that there is a new one on the very near horizon. The cost of mine will be covered by the RS Actives, so I'm not so worried about the cost.
If money is no object, get the Nolden, Vision X or JW Speaker LED lights rather than the Britpart Lynx ones - they are supposed to be a lot better (but pricier). I have a set of Trucklite LED lights on my Defender, they are better than Raybrigs etc in every way, apart from in certain weather conditions the road just 'soaks up' all of the light, usually when it's wet. Apparently it's because the spread of light colours in an LED is very narrow, whereas for a HID or traditional bulb it's wider. I'll get an LED set for the '5 at some point though...

Led bulbs that are direct H4 replacements for halogen projectors are now a thing. Just fitted a set and are much better than the ring xenon max bulbs from mx5 parts.

Are they E Marked? If not (and I don't think there are any E marked retrofit LEDs), they aren't road legal (no matter if they pass MOT or not) - it'd probably never cause any issues, but should the worst happen you may end up with invalidated insurance / refusal to pay out etc if the insurance inspector notices...

Them blue painted lamps in the OP are a disaster. They just filter out light at the red end of the spectrum. As this is an incandescent lamp, that's where most of the light is. So your really castrating your light source with this daft blue coat. Besides which, red light has the least effect regarding night blindness. It's very hard to blind anyone with even huge amounts of red light. Unlike blue, which leaves your pupils like pin pricks. This has a knock on effect that many forget. On a moonlit night, you can often see further without your headlights, because that near field brightness needs adapting to. This effect is greatly increased with lamps that carry a lot of blue. Which is what these hids and leds do. So you can see great where they illuminate, but you can't see beyond this. So most of the scatter you should see from the lights of cars, driving within dips ahead, is missing road information.

For a while now, I have fancied lamps with a little more adjustment. The towing level thing never seems to work in my cars. I would like perhaps 3 levels of brightness though. Which is odd, as I only use main beam to tell others it's time to switch theirs off. That though, the main beam. With a dipped for driving. Plus a low level light, which is really just a marker lamp.

Thanks for the heads up. I have ÂŁ400 to spend from the sale of my old lights, but can't spend any more. I have a few months until the car goes for paint, so I think I'll hold off and see what I can find.

If you have a look on defender2.net, there's reviews, comparisons of nearly all of the main LED lights over there - they are really into them. They pop up in the for sale section too, and they often have deals / group buys..

I got my Trucklites for about ÂŁ200 from there a few years ago on a group buy, which was about half RRP..
