Them blue painted lamps in the OP are a disaster. They just filter out light at the red end of the spectrum. As this is an incandescent lamp, that's where most of the light is. So your really castrating your light source with this daft blue coat. Besides which, red light has the least effect regarding night blindness. It's very hard to blind anyone with even huge amounts of red light. Unlike blue, which leaves your pupils like pin pricks. This has a knock on effect that many forget. On a moonlit night, you can often see further without your headlights, because that near field brightness needs adapting to. This effect is greatly increased with lamps that carry a lot of blue. Which is what these hids and leds do. So you can see great where they illuminate, but you can't see beyond this. So most of the scatter you should see from the lights of cars, driving within dips ahead, is missing road information.
For a while now, I have fancied lamps with a little more adjustment. The towing level thing never seems to work in my cars. I would like perhaps 3 levels of brightness though. Which is odd, as I only use main beam to tell others it's time to switch theirs off. That though, the main beam. With a dipped for driving. Plus a low level light, which is really just a marker lamp.
