Mx5 Mk3 1800....engine Removal

Hi, I have removed all sorts of engines over the years, but not as modern & as full of plumbing & bits as my wife's MX5.

Any tips & advice would be appreciated. I gather the engine & gearbox has to be removed in one piece from underneath. That's the daunting bit...I do have an engine "crane" & heavy jacks on hand. I would rather have somebody tell me the pitfalls than find out the hard way. PMQ

Lift engine and gearbox UP not down !! Its much easier as 1 piece rather than trying to split engine from gearbox while still in the car.Its very simple set up .The PPF frame just needs to be unbolted from gearbox and maybe tied to the side a bit .Remove speedo cable and 4 wires and gear lever of course.Rest is easy as the connectors will not interchange. The fuel pipes are important so make sure you know which of the two go back to which metal pipe.Disconnect exhaust at the cat as its easier and will lift out the the eng/box etc.Refit as much as you can while the lump is on the ground, especially starter motor /exhauist etc.I always remove the drive shaft from the diff as it very difficulkt to get it back in to gearbox while trying to drop eng/box back in to car as same time.PM me if you have any queries at the time

Sorry see its mk3 not mk1/2 so above may not apply

Ask Rodders, he drops the engines in no time.

Put the car up on a 2 post ramp, remove undertray, exhaust, propshaft and ppf
Disconnect/unbolt front calipers and up plug abs sensors...remove radiator bottom brackets....drain coolant.

From under bonnet
Remove air filter box, disconnect ecu and un-plug wires from fuse box, remove battery....remove nuts from suspension strut tops
Remove a couple of pipes water/fuel

Lower engine/box and front suspension onto trolley, lift ramp and hey presto..........time for a cup of tea

90mins

Hi

How did you get on with the engine swap? I'm about to do my 2.0 MK3.

Folks, any pro\cons with bottom or top approach. I should add, i'm quite restricted as all i have is a block&tackle and crane, no ramps :-(

Thanks

I'm still looking at mine.....have removed elect. & fuel connections etc though. It's all a bit tight on room, especially down around the steering rack, I'm hoping that the engine/g.box will move back a bit when lowered. Think it will take longer than 90mins! PMQ

Thanks for that...I have removed the bolt from the joint, along with the wheels, calipers & all the electrical connectors & pipes I can get to, but I've been distracted by my X type playing up & changing the fuel p/p on my grandson's KA .... and it's too cold
