Mk1 Hardtop Latches

Yesterday after a great deal of searching I acquired my first MX-5. I'll post a hello thread introducing myself when I can, but I've barely seen the car in the daylight since I've owned it!

The reason for my post is the seller of the car I bought has offered me a scruffy hardtop to go with the car, but when I looked at it it is missing the rear latches that secure the top to the rear deck. I've told the guy I'll let him know on the hardtop once I've looked into it.

I've done a fair bit of searching and can't find the rear latches for much less than ÂŁ100 each, which will make this scruffy hardtop work out more expensive than most that are on eBay.

My question is, is there anywhere that I can pick up the rear latches for sensible money, or failing that is it feasible to mount a hardtop with the rear latches missing?

Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers.

I wouldn't use one without the latches, they're one of the main mounting points that keep it secure, completely unsafe without them I would imagine.

The parts for the latches do tend to be quite expensive I must say, not sure on where is the cheapest. Have you tried Autolink?

Some hardtops like the Honeybourne mouldings hardtop don't have rear latches and are not designed to be fitted with them. They just use side mounting and front latches.

Well I didn't know that! All I know is that mine needs them haha. Mine has the side latches missing, so I really need the rear ones.

Depends what you mean by rear latches - Really, the 'rear latches' are the ones behind the side windows and usually called 'side latches' as the ones on the deck aren't a latch at all. If you mean you're missing the side ones, I have some Jaas ones you can have for ÂŁ30. If you mean the rear deck fixings - they're known as 'frankenstein bolts' and I've got a pair you can have for ÂŁ10. Drop me a PM if either of those will help you out. :)

Cheers for the swift replies!

The parts I'm on about are the pieces that are attached to the hood and hook over the Frankenstein bolts on the rear deck. I think the official term is 'rear deck lock'

These jobbies:

The hood has fluted sections where it looks like they should fit, but sadly they're not present. The front and side latches are present and working.

The hardtop is cheap enough, but if I have to fork out another ÂŁ200 on these then it's a non starter.

Are you sure it's supposed to have them? As already stated above, some hardtops don't have the rear latches, but still have a section in the mould that looks liks they should be there.

My hardtop is a Honeybourne moulding one and has the moulding part, but no actual provision for the rear latches. Unfortunately the best pic I have of the area:
