I had 2 over the years. Both were the GR which is the non Mivec 180bhp version. They were both in auto and I liked both of them. They are really nice cars, comfortable, good looking, go quite well. The GPX is the 200bhp version that has Mivec which is like vtec/vvc.
A tuned GPX will see 220bhp. They sound amazing at full chat.

I would have another one but it would have to be the ltd edition with the lsd as mentioned above.

Manual was an option in the R like every other model, the LSD was probably the only difference!

They did claim it was the lightweight version but figures are rare

I've had a couple of FTO's myself so should be able to answer most questions

First was a 1996 GPX TIP

I personally was a bit anti FTO as i was a honda man but circumstances lead me towards an auto, wanting to stay jap it seemed the right way to go.
If you appreciate the car for what it is (a small tourer) you'll really enjoy it
I would hold out for a manual, however the tips are fine and a welcome break in london traffic. there is a 20kg difference between the tip and the manual and about a 20bhp loss (thats been the average gain for people who've done the swap)

That looks like 'Little Red' to me. I seem to remember, back when I had my FTO that someone had bought it, and then tried to sell it fairly quickly afterwards, and seemed to struggle. Was that you?

This was my FTO:

She started off life as a completely standard tiptronic GPX, and during that time I had her converted to a manual gearbox by Japco (FTO Specialists near Northampton). Towards the end of my ownership, before selling I also had to have the engine replaced. The bottom-end bearings went, which seemed to be quite a common failure of the Mivec engine, even though she was very well maintained.

i own one at the moment had it for two years now its a gr with tip and i think it is a great car not had any problems and reasonable on the juice.I would definately recomend it.

my work mate has a gpx + 1 on the sound, its epic.

 

I think they are a bit skin deep - look good (maybe) and sound good, but is it a 'drivers' car?

 

I am not sure as i haven't driven one, i personally think they are not very pleasing to the eye and with them being fwd.. not sure if the are a drivers car. they seem to get kitted up a lot which screams show car to me.. hmmmm

 

Theyre i decent FWD car, thing is people try to compare them to DC2's.

There a small tourer and perfect for it, ideally could've been better balanced (the V6 is quite heavy) although despite this they handle reasonably well

Not sure if it is true or not, but, I was told that it would not take much to put evo running gear in one. Considering how cheap they are it's worth it for a few months just to try it. You may like it you may not. Go for it.

 

Yeah the EVO Swap has been done but not overly succesful and VERY expensive, the choice at the minute is the galant/legnum VR4 twin turbo swaps

I have had two FTO's in the past. A GR and a rare yellow GPX.Both had the autobox which you spend most of the time fighting it. Both had quite bad torque steer and the rear seats are really quite small. In my own opinion you are better with a two seater car. They are quite cheap but insurance can be a bit high. Beware of black ones. They tend to get severe roof rust

 

Why does the colour make any difference to rust?

 

I'm not convinced an FTO is going to sold your problem Gareth, I can't help feeling that the modding will just start with that but you'll be starting with a stock one rather than a heavily modded 5!

Also as said FWD, wtf???

My way of justifying what gets spent on the 5 is that I know I'm NOT going sell it so I'll get full use out of all the bits I buy

 

i've never driven one but i can remember at japfest a couple f years back they seemed to go pretty well around the track, the noise was superb too

 

I have only driven one once on a 3 hour cross country drive and TBH it was like just like "any another car" in that it didn't particularly excite me in anyway and just did what it had to do, I get the same numb feeling from driving things like new fords, vauxhall's etc, it is not a bad thing but there are more engaging cars to drive in my opinion

However I must admit though I do like how they look but my favourite colours are white and black.

I've had a couple,facelifts are better,not that quick but i love the look,this was my last one -

 

Test drove a fair few before i bought the 5 (as i need a Auto).

Really didn't like em at all, not really comfortable enough to be a motorway basher and not really fast or tight enough on the handling front to be a sports car.
If you want a cheap to run motorway basher then get a diesel VG or BMW, if ya want a sports car FI ya 5

If you want a good FWD car buy a Prelude , they make a mockery of the FTO in the right spec (2ws LSD no sunroof BB4)

 

I've never driven one but lusted after one until I read that they aren't half as good to drive as Gran Turismo would have you believe. The general consensus seems to be that if you want a FWD coupe that drives well buy a Honda (Prelude/CRX/ITR) but if you want one that sounds nice and looks sexy then the FTO is an option.
