i remember reading it somewhere , not the pistons smashing into the valves but i imagine the high revs causing the belt to snake and smash the waterpump etc,

Well it's still wrong. My belt snapped at about 5k, I towed it home and fitted a new belt, drove to work the next day.
The belt snaps/or strips it's ribs and then just hangs there, it's only the crank pulley (which is tiny) which makes it move.
