Headlights Not Going Down

Hi Guys,

New to this and new to MX5 ownership so hoping you can help.

I have inherited a 1993 Mazda MX5 NA Mk1 Roadster Eunos (Japanese import) and i have a couple of issues that i would like to fix, so i am going to attempt them one by one so here goes.

Firstly the headlamps will pop up but will not return. I have been told it is more than likely the retract relay and i have read on various forums of the location of said relay, (either left hand side of the engine bay, or under the dash on the drivers side) will be black or green and will have 'retract' written on it. I have looked under the driver side dash and there is no relay, just fuses. I have looked in the engine bay on the left hand side and there are two relays, but neither say 'retract' on. So now i am asking for help to see if anyone can clarify:-

  • the most likely cause of the lights not retracting
  • the location of the retract relay

Greatly anticipating an answer.

Has someone had the heater/ radio panel off recently ? If the headlight retractor / hazard light switch has not been reconnected, the lights will pop up when switched on but will not drop down again when switched off. To take off the panel, you first need to remove the centre console (5 screws) then two screws either side of the bottom of the heater panel and two behind the eyeball vents. Hopefully a nice easy fix.

What gm eunos said: probably the Hazard/Popup switch unplugged, but if not you'll probably find the Retract relay *is* under the dash on the driver's side. There's a bracket tucked up under the dash which holds a cluster of relays. Turn on the hazard lights and you can follow the sound of that relay clicking.
