I was going to go and take a look at this as it seemed pretty good value for money
http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201504172698158?atmobcid=soc4

As the new government MOT checker is there to be used thought I'd give it a bash and see what the history is like, boy was I shocked! It won't let me link to it directly but reg is P231RBK and make is Mitsubishi.
https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk

Hard to believe after all that history it all of a sudden just has 1 advisory and the mileage in the advert is just a blatant lie (even if the MOT checker is in Km it doesn't convert to that in miles).

Avoiding that disaster!

Beware though it can also give false info, especially if a vehicle has had a reg change. Had to inform them of false info on my Mk3, they said it failed an MOT and had advisories, of which it never did. It was all a mix up in the two cars reg number after a personal plate swap.

Apart form the above I find it seems to give any buyer another check when considering a purchase, as long as you have the reg no for the check that is.

I like the way my own car's odometer readings change over time. Or rather jump up and down like a yo-yo.

2005: 22,825 miles

2006: 254,294 kilometers

2007: 273,184 miles

2008: 292,981 miles

2009: 313,142 kilometers

2010: 33,166 miles

2011: 351,581 kilometers

2012: 372,688 kilometers

2013: 39,168 miles

2013: 391,778 kilometers

2014: 41,005 miles

2015: 430,069 miles

(the two readings for 2013 were a fail and a pass, between which the car seems to have covered a lot of miles. In fact it seems to have spent the 4 intervening days traveling at an average speed of 2,000 mph)

I've had a private reg on 3 different cars - 2 of them mx5's and it's completely screwed my MOT history! I'm really hoping that I printed a copy of my true cars history a few years ago before I put the new plate on it because at the moment it looks bloody awful. It's showing MOT's before the car was even due one! Not looking forward to sorting it out, fortunately I'm not planning to sell up so there's no rush ????

Thankfully I took a picture of my kmh odometer alongside the replacement adjusted to correct reading miles one when I did my swap to explain the sudden fall in mileage.

Glad I'm not the only one with the undertray listed as an advisory, perhaps an observation would be a better way to describe it.

Funny how different people have different experiences. The personal number on my Roadster has been on two different previous motors of mine and itself replaced a previous private number that came with the car, yet my car history on the check site is spot on all the way through. The number on my daily is off my previous one, that's spot on also. I've been using the checker for a long time when looking at buying cars, but VOSA have just changed it, last time I tried it the record only went back four years, where previously it went right back to computerisation, when I'd checked I had a box pop up asking for my feedback. I pointed out that the system wasn't as good as it used to be and got a mail back thanking me, and they'd pass on my comments. I've just looked and see that my records on both mine now go right back to 2006. The shame is, the old set-up used to name the test centre, now it doesn't, so when it lists a fail followed by a pass, you can't tell whether the faults were corrected and the car re-tested, or just taken to a different "friendlier" tester! It does make it harder for anybody to clock a motor, but doesn't seem to have worked in the case of that Challenger does it?

It's swapping regs between cars of the same make that it's incapable of dealing with.

Send them the details of the car you want correcting. They will ask for the VIN number at some point, after a few emails mine got sorted in around 2 weeks.

That sounds far too simple!

This is a very useful tool.

I've been looking at Fiat Panda 100hp's recently and the MOT history on some of them is shocking.

A couple have fairly chunky gaps between MOT certificates so has prompted me to ask what was going on with the cars between those times.

If nothing else it allows me to ask some fairly good questions to make a seller squirm a bit.

It's great for looking at cars, but don't be put off by a fail, especially on older cars.

Brake pipes corrode, suspension components wear out, bulbs blow, electrics can play up.

As long as the works been done it's not a problem.

My Mk1 failed on a leaking shock last year, so it's had 4 new KYB's, a full set of dust boot/bumpstops and a set of new springs.

I'd hope any potential buyer would appreciate when a cars been looked after well.

This is fun to use.

Looking at a ÂŁ500 '96 here: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201602070807282

Ad photo shows 1116213 miles

Ad says: 'Needs a cam cover gasket for MOT'

I say to myself 'WTF does that mean?'

Check-MOT says it passed an MOT on 30th Jan at 102762 miles

So he's giving some bullshit reason it won't pass MOT, but GOV.UK says it just got one, and it somehow seems to have done 9,000 miles in 9 days. (Further than it's gone in the previous 5 years.)

Ad says '15" Alloy Wheels'

But photos show 185/60/14 tyres

Ad says 'Height adjustable seats'

Photo shows standard seats

Ad says 'Traction control'

And on, and on, and on.

Simple explanation.

She copied the advert from another car, and didn't know the differences.
