Aftermarket rims and better tires for "spirited driving"?

My MX5 was fit with some nasty poundland tires when it needed to pass it's most recent MOT (previous owner) and I think they are pretty bad. Look to be some cheap Pirelli all seasons.

I want to replace the tires and possibly the rims as well but to be honest, there are 100s of options in both departments and I don't know where to start. I am looking for tires that perform well in the wet (not winter though) and if required, I am happy to up the width of the rims slightly if it's worth it.

Right now I seem to have zero traction in the wet at the rear, even if I'm light on the gas and avoid uplift. I really think the tires are that shit.

EDIT: Wife has given me permission to spend no more than ÂŁ500 for a set

you'll need to stretch a wee bit more to get both a set of tyres and wheels.

I recon you'd do fine with some JR3s. they're very very popular around here (Spain). not that heavy either. We call them Juan Ramones. No complaints about quality though.

save on smokes and ale for a few weeks and then put some better tyres on - khumo ecsta are a great (cheap!) summer tyre, yokohama advan fleva are more but quieter.

195/50r15 will fit perfectly on a 7" rim and there's tons of availability.

Thanks for the reply! The JR3s look nice. Will 195/50r15 fit on the stock rims (2000 Isola)? I've never bought rims or tires for any cars ever so I am not sure what works and what doesn't. The only reason I would get new rims is to allow wider tires, I would rather not spend the money given that my stock rims are still in pretty good condition and was trying to stay close to stock on the trim.

Also are ÂŁ40 tires really that good? That just seems....cheap. I can't imagine my current tires cost anymore than that either but I assume they are rubbish due to them being cheap all season tires.

Khumos, Hankook and Nankang are good within the cheaper bracket. Some of the other brands not so much. 'you long dingdong tyre concern'

Toyo are good also and bridge cheap to premium.

If you want to stretch to Yokohamas/Goodyear/Michelin/Continental you can't go wrong either, imo.

Bridgestone's EU selection isn't that great and I consider Yokohama more honourable.

195/50r15 is perfect on our cars and fits 15" between 5.5" and 8" wide.
