4-1 Vs 4-2-1

Just wanted to know peoples thoughts on header design. I am after an aftermarket set of headers for my Mk3 but other than the options in Japan and US the only other option I have is the IL Motorsport headers but mx5parts only have the 4-2-1 in stock. And they seem to be a great price!

Most of the others I have seen in the US from Good-Win-Racing, Racing Beat and Corksport etc etc all use a similar 4-1 design like this:

The only ones I can get in the UK (as far as I know) are these:

They seem a similar design to the standard headers but better flow and without the CAT:

Will that IL 4-2-1 give me more power but with characteristics same as the standard? From what I understand the 4-1 will give better scavenging and better power at high revs where as the 4-2-1 gives better mid range power and torque?

I am also getting the supercharger fitted in Feb so do I wait out and see if anyone designes a header designed to get the most out of this? Would a 4-1 or 4-2-1 be better for a supercharged engine? Good-win-Racing in the US say they are not making another header as they think the current one is good enough to get good gains with the supercharger.

Just wanted to share some thoughts of mine and see what you say as I keep coming close to buying some headers and then am not sure what to do!

I am not fussed about missing the CAT as there is another CAT in the mid section and I will extend the O2 leads and relocate the sensors if I need to or use the SIM provided with the IL Headers. I am more interested in which ones will give me the best performance gains.

And lastly the car will be just used as a daily driver with some B road fun at weekends and maye a track day if I am ever brave enough to take my pride and joy on the track.

Thanks.

id wait o get the charger on. You may find there is less room than some of the designs use and also if you really want a header later you will or wont feel the benefit which may br more pronounced if you already havr the charger.

To be honest its uncharted waters with the mk3 relatively ( compared to the mk1,2,2.5) especially with the charger.

I think i did feel the improvement of my racing beat 4-1 with my coldside m45 mk1. However i remember Andrew saying it was little noticeable difference with the JR manifold with URN's M62. (if i remember correctly)

However its a different car, engine and charger - well everything is different except for the basic principle of airflow in which case 4-1 is supposed to be better for a supercharger as it gives more top end apparently, but who knows.

Thanks for that.
Looking at the installation of the Cosworth there will be no problems fitting any of the headers as the Supercharger fits in where the old intake manifold was on the other side of the engine. The guys in the US seem to have the Good-win-Racing Roadster sport headers fitted with the cosworth.

I think I will wait it out and see how it feels with just the charger and see if anyone in the UK like Miltek are going to make a header to go with the Cosworth.

Anothe rproblem could ne noise. The headers get rid of the CAT so sound levels are said to go up by about 20%. Then the Supercharger may also add to that making it pretty loud. It is shame the Cosworth doesn't give out a good whine though. lol
