12 Months Later - Alex's Build Thread

So thought I would stick up a build thread, well a second one as my first one was wank and the car and I have gone in a completely different direction to that. 12 Months from purchase I think its time to show what's been going on

Right the firm I work for at the moment decided that they where going to give me a bloody big van to drive round it, so it wasn't to long before I got feed up not being able to park it anyway and general being noisy and crap on my 50,000 mile a year journey.

So looking at the generic euro boxes available for weekend run arounds and was thinking bah, I want my 1275 Mini back in one piece. This one;

Then I saw the light and found that MX5's are pretty much at the going rate for shit boxes, so I popped up to Yeovil and picked this little charmer up;

I also had a Eureka moment this afternoon, the intake on my turbo is 76mm but the AFM outlet is 57mm. So needed to adapt the AFM to suit my 135 degree bend.

So take some 57mm pipe and cut approx 25mm of it, then cut it as to open it out. Then from an other piece cut a small length, so you have this;

Then place the 2 parts on the outlet of the AFM, such it has made the outside diameter larger.

Then wrap it tightly wrap it in electrical tape.

Then slip on the 76mm elbow, it was rather tight and needed a bit of scewdrivering.

There you go, job jobed :thumb-up2:

I'd have had mine running this weekend if I hadn't been let down by ASH... Waiting on a reducing straight and reducing elbow. Supposedly sent on Monday. Missed out on fitting the flywheel and clutch this weekend.

When do you think you'll be finished?
Ahh that sucks, they sent my stuff pretty quickly. Also it came recorded signed for, so they should be able to trace yours.

My plan is

- 1 weekends = Drill sump and oil return

- 2 Weekends = Fabricate exhaust

- 3 Weekends = Fit injectors (need to get them cleaned)

So I could knock the timing back and have it running in about 3 weeks. Just the black cloud looming over me of automotive wiring, the likes of boost gauges and EMB.

Sounds like a practical time plan. Mines been off the road for 4weeks now and missing it... Emb is a doddle so don't worry about that, if you get stuck give us a shout.

That's a massive elbow! My turbo inlet is 57mm, so got a 57mm 180deg ally elbow then a 57-76mm reducer for the afm. Will prob need to cut bits down once I have everything to get it all to fit.

I need to wire up my map sensor and make a turbo brace this week.

Engine bay looks a bit like this now.

That is looking very clean I have to say, i'm liking the hard piped bends. Got a build thread link?

Also where did you source that vacuum tubing?

I have a build thread but there's nothing in it lol. Haven't touched it since this time last year... Will take me hours when I finally get round to it.

This is the auction 190893549922. Got 5 meters worth. Ironically I ordered it on wed and it was delivered fri. Cam direct from ASH. Going to call them tomorrow and find out where my reducers are.

Go on do an update, I love a good build thread read.

What ID did you get?

Ahhh you doing well and so close to the choochoo sounds, I on the other hand am back at square 1 and have weeks(months at my current pace) of work sorting out rust before I can even think about going turbo.
Can't wait for some vids!

Soon, soon.... ah yeah rust... erm i'm in a similar position. Did most of it last year and have found a new whole on the corner I didn't do, just cant be asked to lay on the floor doing the dirty work.

Yes will stick some videos up, once done.

Maybe... One night this week.

Went for 4mm. I've used cable ties on all ports just incase, but prob overkill. It was a tight fit.
I might opt for a 5mm ID then.

Cheers for the info.

What's that you say you need to keep your AFM... not unless your running MEGAsquirt :D

Driftmonkey kindly exchanged some hard earned cash for a Megasquirt MS1 on a V3 board, along with a VTPS and AIT sensor.

That is the plan, just that filter won't go over my 76mm inlet. Need a new one, so another item I have bought incorrectly!

Loving the minimal look of turbos.

Managed to basterise a perfectly good K&N filter to get it on the inlet, it was a 2 man job and similar to trying to ply a car tyre on.

Looks much better, and less clutter

Also I got feed up looking at all the shiny new parts and the horrible condition cam cover. so I took these;

Plus some sand paper got it to this about half way through;

Ends up with this;

looking good!!

I wish I could mount my airf filter directly to the turbo, I've got heat soak from the manifold/DP and I now can't fit my ultra racing strut brace :(
I could put my strut brace back on now, didn't think of that. Definitely the way to go, AFM-less.

Look at all that space! Good work Alex. Come on we need a video.
I know, I know, I haven't even attempted to start it yet. Just need to get the oil return in place, then technical it could be fired up. Really though I need to finish the exhaust and implement the Megasquirt.

Bit of a weird problem I had which I haven't had chance to look into, went to change the spark plugs to turbo relevant ones. But the old ones where all oily on the tops where the socket meets it. As in oil had gotten in the hole. It was only on 1 & 2.

Maybe I just wipped oil into the hole when I slid the cam cover on, should I be worried?????

#151 ·
No just sounds like someone got oil in the holes when changing oil bud, aslong as the spark plugs itself isn't soaked
No spark plug end seemed okay, by the time I got them out the end where oilyish. The tips were same in colour and condition to the remaining 2.
