So thought I would stick up a build thread, well a second one as my first one was wank and the car and I have gone in a completely different direction to that. 12 Months from purchase I think its time to show what's been going on

Right the firm I work for at the moment decided that they where going to give me a bloody big van to drive round it, so it wasn't to long before I got feed up not being able to park it anyway and general being noisy and crap on my 50,000 mile a year journey.

So looking at the generic euro boxes available for weekend run arounds and was thinking bah, I want my 1275 Mini back in one piece. This one;

Then I saw the light and found that MX5's are pretty much at the going rate for shit boxes, so I popped up to Yeovil and picked this little charmer up;

Be careful with the sputtering and stumbling, get the fuel sorted. Bad enough knock will give you sputtering, hesitation etc. Would be a shame to blow it up.
Thanks for the heads up bud, I dont have any intention to go any further without proper progress into the tuning.

Choo, choo, hurrah and choo once more!

Great work buddy! I've enjoyed reading thus far and look forward to the next phase of development (especially the bit where you get to use the damn thing as it is intended!)

Sketchy x
Thanks chap, I prefer reading your threads a bit more interesting than this.

Oh yes, my plan is to get a few autotests under the belt. Then get her out on Smeatharpe airfield. Got stack of tyres ready to go.

When I changed to the t28, I knocked the timing back above 100kpa 4 degrees from the map you're running.. did a bit of autotuning and the afr's look ok in boost, maybe a touch on the rich side. It seems to be ok so far, with retarding my timing autotune ended up removing some fuel at the top end and adding a tiny amount just before and around peak torque.

I did add 5-10 points on the ve table in boost also just to make sure I was tuning on the rich side of safe, if you get what I mean.

So far no explosions.. yet!

Keep on going though! you'll have a beast of a car in no time, you just have to sort the niggling problems you invariably get with a new setup! i.e my t28 hitting the bonnet lol

Thats just kept me occupied reading all of that! Also rather jealous too! Need to get my first mx5 asap!!
Do it, you wont look back. But then ever so slowly the need to boost it will come creeping in :D .

See more than I know about the map on my own car :p . Cant wait to just go bam WOT second gear up the mile straight by my house, with all that fizzy boosty goodness.

Hahaha hitting the bonnet, did you make your own manifold?

What is the fluttering? Is it air returning out the air filter?
Sounds like it, bov-less or hard bov spring.
No blow off valves here.

No much to report this weekend, having a quite one.

Installed one of MX5Dans radiators.

Grrrrrrrr, look at me and all my boostings.

Not sure if I want to attempt to repaint it before the summer or not, this shows how bad the boot is.

Real men have boosted RWD daily drivers as well :D . Gave her a well deserved clean.

I have been speaking to some local garages about getting some dyno tuning done, hopefully next weekend I may have a complete running set up. Unless I can find anyone local who knows what they are doing.

Looking good mate. Will a machine polish not bring that paint back up?

I like your bmw aswell btw, what engine's in it?
Nah tried that its well and truly gone, just equals out the colour but remains just as pink.

Cheers bud, 320d M sport.

I got mine started on Friday, need to weld the join on the downpipe as the slip joint leaks like a mofo, and need to redo my compressor outlet adapter I made as it's leaking. But it was idling just fine!
Another friend of mine has just bought a mk1 and is going turbo, in exchange of me welding his sills(he hasn't got the time) he's going to make me another turbo manifold, this time for a td04.
My car doesn't make choochoo sounds, think it's because of the afm?

Have you got the correct size U clamp on the slip joint? Mine dont seem to be leaking, well there is only one that I didn't weld up.

Sweet more turbos then, is the td04 the same flange as a td05?

Hmmmm. more than likely. Probably the piping run as well as the AFM. My compressor is literally spinning with only a small bit of mesh in front of it.

It's a hodgepodge of bits of pipe I had in the garage. I cut the last bend from the 2.5" exhaust/downpipe that used to join up with a hks manifold/turbo, then cut up a screamer pipe from a 200sx, had to flip the main pipe as it's 180 degrees out, cut up the flange so it's one big hole rather than 2, then chopped up a bit of exhaust and added that to make it bell mouthed, this then fitted inside the downpipe after I cut slots and opened it up.
I'm just going to weld it in situ.
My exhaust is single box but not a straight thru, so it's pretty tame sounding at idle.

Just give the car a buff, or cover it in more stickers, blerugh!

Nope the manifold is a HKS! It was originally designed to have a t25 on it, so with the bigger t3 compressor housing it just touched, so I've removed a bit from bonnet bracing.

You'll love it when you get it mapped properly! Have you got anything controlling the boost or are you just running wastegate pressure?

Does ms1 have boost control? Its well worth getting if you can, makes boost come on a fair bit earlier!

Looks like you're nearly there!

#372 ·
Just running waste gate pressure currently through a MBC, in an attempt to reduce creep. I do need to relocate the take off point for the waste gate to after the IC.

I do need to look into EBC, I think MS1 has the facility. Just more for my reading list.

this is going to be awesome I cant wait to see it at a drift day
Cheers bud, 3 or 4 more weeks of Uni work then I'm back on it.

The car has now moved to the front lawn, so is there..... waiting.... watching..... ready to unless turbo noises on a village near you :D
