12 Months Later - Alex's Build Thread

So thought I would stick up a build thread, well a second one as my first one was wank and the car and I have gone in a completely different direction to that. 12 Months from purchase I think its time to show what's been going on

Right the firm I work for at the moment decided that they where going to give me a bloody big van to drive round it, so it wasn't to long before I got feed up not being able to park it anyway and general being noisy and crap on my 50,000 mile a year journey.

So looking at the generic euro boxes available for weekend run arounds and was thinking bah, I want my 1275 Mini back in one piece. This one;

Then I saw the light and found that MX5's are pretty much at the going rate for shit boxes, so I popped up to Yeovil and picked this little charmer up;

So time went by, enjoyed driving it around and thrashing it about, all taken well in its stride.

Did the typical, buy some Rota's and apply GV lip;

Also made a offset number plate bracket, hell knows why people buy these things it like a 20 minute job to make one, any-who I then realised 13 X 7 inch number plates are massive;

Favourite thing is to keeping looking at it, and having to have a window seat at the pub with the misses :D .

And then it happened, I found myself on the youtube's one evening finding out what all this drifting is about.

So diff + MIG = Welded :drool:

After some streeto fails, and getting the police turning up at my front door I thought it was best to not be a dick and do this properly. Went and got myself a place booked at the drift day at Smeartharpe airfield.

Commence the preparation.

Got some tyres and some daisy's;

Then decided to adopted my pro tetris skills to the car, who says these cars haven't got much room are wrong.

3/8/13 saw my first drift day, and it was a great laugh you pick up sooooooooooooo much more skill at one of these days than pissing around on an industrial estate.

The tutoring was great as well, picked up my mistakes real quick and stamped them out.

No particularly drifty photos as I spent most of the day in the play pen getting shit right.

My mate Ash came along as well, and his day did not go well at all.

The journey there;

12/10/13 Smeartharpe day round 2 for me.

Another brilliant day, really got my game face on this time, realised I could do with some more lock.

My car is poo;

So yeah that's my years experience in the MX5, want a journey.

Got the winter to get it ready for next year, some super style knuckles in the process, loads of little jobs to do.

And this is going on;

great work dude. car looks awesome. how is the hydro is it an improvement on stock handbrake
Thanks bud.

Much better than stock, but you still have to give it a good old tug. Im running 0.625 cylinder and it would be even better if I had 1.8 brakes on the rear.

Over the winter I will either CNC or weld up a longer wand to it, more leverage less effort hopefully.

i remember when you were at smeartarpe and your mates rad went. you look like your getting on well
Thanks bud, think I have got the hand of it now.

I had to tow him 7 miles back into Honiton, which was fun :lol:

Thanks, yeah it takes up most of the car. Touches the tunnel and the door car, and mounted on the floor it still rubs the roof.

Appreciated, I have only been drifting since August and really got the bug for it.

Its just the whole vibe, first time I went my car completely stopped working, all electrics dead. Got towed back to the pits, before you could say Mazda two guys next to me in the pits had it jacked up, multimeter out diagnosing faults. Found it to be a dodgy earth strap from the battery.

Its a really embracing environment. If you get a chance give it a go :thumb-up: .

Cheers bud, she's a beauty. Super comfortable even with the M Sport suspension and run flats tyres.

Definitely makes you appreciate how good a MX5 is to drive. I could run rings around this with the 5.
