Upgrading To Mk2.5 Big Brakes

Hi all, some years ago I updated my 1990 non-ABS mk1 to the big oem mk2.5 Sport big brakes. I am now needing to change my leaking std mk1 brake booster and am wondering if it is worth getting the bigger booster fitted on some later models? Also if I do fit the bigger one is there anything else worth changing apart from fluid at the same time?

You'll need the master cylinder aswell, mk2 and onwards boosters pushrods don't fit on mk1 masters. Look for an mk2.5 (not mk2, but mk2.5) non ABS car master + booster.

You can try an mk2.5 ABS master+booster. But, the ABS master has 2 outlets, instead of 3. And the servos attached to the ABS masters boost more, so it's likely you'll lock your brakes quite easily.

And yes, absolutely worth the swap.

Above ABS question, yep, they did.

As for the ports question, yes, you're right, I told the number of ports the other way. ABS master cylinder has 2 ports and non-ABS has 3, the third one going to the driver's side front brake.

I took a look to the service manual. In the Brakes section, regarding the "power brake unit", manual states that, in UK, the fatter booster was equipped on standard diff cars, and the LSD cars had a lighter booster. So no ABS related. Things get complicated.

"diferencial estándar": open diff
"LSD": torsen or tochigi-fuji diff

"suspensiones deportivas y rĂ­gidas": yellow bilsteins equipped cars
"suspensiones estándar": standard shocks cars

So, to summarize, if you want to upgrade the hydraulics too, you'll have to look for an LSD mk2.5 MC+booster, or so I think, unless Mazda marketing department has more surprises to give regarding MX5 equipment options across the countries
