Hi thur,

So, kinda caught the drift bug in a semi massive way. Was gonna save my money till crimbo and pick something up but then i saw a little mx on ebay and tbh it looked alright. Popped down to check it out last week and turns out it's a pretty damn clean example imo, but without further adoo may i introduce spider...

She's a little 1.8 eunos, and i plan to make her into a touge style road car b2b drift slag for weekend fun. I have to keep the name spider as the 5 yr old son of the dude i bought it off went mental when his dad told him i'd bought it "NOOOOO bu bu but SPIDER!!!", so spider it shall be in honour of lil Will. It has suffered a recent scrape with a hedge ( i think this killed the owners midlife crisis dream) but other than bumper damage i cant really see anything else but will have a proper look over this weekend coming and report... I wont lie i'm new to the mazda make but have owned various modified jap cars in the past so hoping it wont take too long to adjust.

Noteable extras so far are

Meister R zeta-s coilovers

MX5 Parts Windblocker

MX5 Parts stainless-steel cat-back exhaust

New Pipercross panel filter

Timing advanced to 14 degrees TDC

Initial plans are wheels, steering lock spacers, hub modification, tr lane roll bar, usual tow eye/strap, brake pad upgrades, undercar bracing.

Long term plans are Throttle bodies, arch flares, dented panels :)

Look forward to sharing the progress of my car and my drifting with you fellow nutz!

Jxx

Indeed, tbh i still hop on a long board for a bit of cruising but the bones dont heal like they used to so my halfpipe days are well and truly over lol!!

Drove down to callington to see a mate today to fit a bucket seat although didn't really go to plan. Was pretty sure the seat would go on the rails easily but then it wouldn't and due to a lack of decent drill bits we had to concede. Also turns out my Mal fuse incident has killed the battery, will jump ok but doesnt seem to be holding any charge :( I'm still smiling over my purple wheels so i'm not that worried!

Im only 15 minutes from Callington, with infinite drill bits :D

And plenty of steel to make brackets for runners.

Also I ride, more of downhiller but jump on my BMX from time to time.

Cheers griffo, i love them but think they could be a bit marmite maybe, although makes me like them even more lol!

So been a busy few days it seems, blew a fuse, killed a battery, fitted some wheels, failed at seat fitting, and found some lows. Today i had to replace the battery and really had to think about rolling the arches. Took the day off to get things sorted so popped n got a battery, fitted it there and fingers crossed is good as new... Guess i'll now find out if its a battery drain now, gulp! After the drive back home i really felt like i needed to do something to the arches as they were catching quite a lot. I rang a local garage and they couldn't fit me in till sat, so as i'm using the car as a daily ( ST is in the garage for brakes) a little late night trip to the Fastcar garage happened end i ended up giving this a go myself.

Popped it up on the ramps, and set about it. Had to persuade the edges with a hammer first but both sides seem to have escaped with minor paint loss. Gotta say i feel kinda good as it seems to have stopped 90% of the scrape and is now driveable in anger again. Was at that point where i'd lost a bit of faith so pleased i've sorted some bits. Gonna get a little bit of hammerite tomorrow and have another eve sesh with the roller to see if i can completely kill it but yeah so far so good :)

some more pics..

Is it you arch roller?

#33 ·
Cheers alex, one of them ones that i've seen purple wheels on other cars and it hasnt worked but think it does luckily in my case!

Not my arch roller no, kinda lucky to have access to a couple workshops without needing to have my own gear i guess... Just wish my knowhow was a bit better :(

So after almost a year i'm back!!

Life can be a right fecker at times, and usually it likes to throw as much at you as you can handle. I wont go into too much detail as i'm not really one for X factor style sob stories, but heres a little summary to bring me back to speed with the mx...

I think i'd just bought and fitted some steelies last time i was here, then i had some surgery and my mum had some pretty serious issues which in all honesty kinda stopped my interest in anything other than living and making sure she was ok. The situation carried on into the beginning of this year with things slowly getting better. I then was lucky enough to go on a US tour for my music and spent a month or so traveling round various states meeting some amazing people and playing on some stupidly good sound systems. I came back and things had improved with my mum conciderably, so i returned home to see the sun shining on a very sad little mx5..

I wont lie, i had neglected the little blighter for a while, i had been out in it a couple times if it wasnt too horrible but it had been pretty dormant. Over winter i'd left it out during the horrid weather without proofing the roof which had turned the passenger footwell into a small pond. I'd also forgot to take the battery out which meant it had turned the colour of death, and although i had checked on the car a couple times i just couldnt muster the motivation to sort anything. This brings me up to last weekend..

Luckily for me i'm currently pretending to be a musician so am spending much more time at home, and find during down time i can fiddle with the car. So i began to sort some bits out for the mot like the horn, and relocating the smashed fog light ( call it a battle scar ) into the rear cluster. I did this simply by replacing one of the reverse bulbs with a multi LED buld from halfords and re-routing the wiring from the exisiting switch. I had also put my battery on charge a few days earlier and noticed that it had turned back to green so i plugged it all back in, turned the key and sure enough she started first time and sounded lovely. I couldn't believe it was being so good to me so i booked the mot for the next day, popped some injector cleaner in and waited patiently to take it out for a blast before mot to blow out some cobwebs...

mx21014g_zpsd29b4ea8.jpg

All went to plan, the beast sailed through it's mot so i then set about sorting some other little niggles i'd noticed on the brief morning blast. I booked it in for some alignment which turned out to be a blessing, although now thats sorted the steering wheel points to the right and it pulls to the left so i'm gonna take it back on monday and ask wtf they've done lol?!?!

mx21014c_zpsb2105f0d.jpg

Toe was just a little bit out then??

mx21014d_zps0715e753.jpg

As i say, theres now the wheel pointing in odd direction issue so i can't really comment if anythings better! I'll take it back on monday to Pro tyre and see if they can explain. In the meantime today i thought i'd re proof the roof, de water mark the body work and generally stitch up and duct tape so battle wounds I also took out the front lights in waiting for some tsi's. So here it is now...

Plans are really to enjoy it now for a bit while adding bits and bobs in the name of safety. Probably brake pads or possibly brake ugrade of some sort, and I've got a single loop bar from Vindi on order aswell just so the mrs feels better about me dissapearing late at night ;) Theres also a buddy club bucket seat sat in a workshop waiting to be bolted directly to the floor, but we all know Rome wasn't built in a day...

It's good to have the bug back!

Been doing a little more tweaking while accumulating funds for drift days. Had planned to do a few serious things to it recently but thanks to having the mystic meg of accountants those plans will have to be put on hold for bit...

So some cheap and easy mods here we go...

Firstly, resprayed my wiper arms with some paint i had lying around.. Now look like new :)

wipers_zps932b90bf.jpg

Secondly, was getting fed up with the arm rests on the doors digging into my manly thighs. I looked around the house for anything i could possibly use for door pulls and stumbled across an old takata box from my honda days, and voila! I went and looked at some materials for the doors but after pricing it up i figured washers painted black were good enough to cover the holes.

doorhandles_zps66119d47.jpg

Lastly i fitted my tow strap and gave it a wash to rid it of tree sap...

Going to be looking at getting a diff to weld up over the next couple weeks. Does anyone know if running a 1.6 diff has any advantages in a 1.8 car at all??

Hopefully have some more exciting things occuring soon!
