So after nearly 1 year of owning this car I thought its a good time to add a topic here.
This is it at Donington Park last week.
mx5%2Bdonny%2B004.jpg

Details of the car so far:

  • 1.8l Eunos import 1994/L reg
  • Only engine mod (so far) is a generic induction filter (air box deleted)
  • The car's been dyno'd (oct 2012) at 94bhp at the wheels, 120bhp at the fly wheel according to the dyno.
  • Suspension is TA Technics Coil overs - these were fitted when i bought the car, but other than being a little soft I'm happy with them. If i can find a cheap 2nd hand set of GAZ, HKS or Meisters I might change them, but atm I'm content.
  • Carbing 6pt roll bar with door bars
  • Carbing front strut brace with brake servo stopper
  • Yellow stuff pads on the front, standard pads on the rear, standard discs all round atm, may upgrade eventually, but as with the suspension i'm happy with the performance right now.
  • FlowFlex poly bushes all round, refurbed the wishbones at the same time.
  • Aircon deleted, Heating deleted, Centre console (almost) deleted, still have the stereo in, also created a switch panel, which is a bit of work in progress.
  • Interior stripped, carpets and door cards are gone.
  • Steering wheel is a D-shape 30cm generic kit car wheel on a "sparco" quick release hub.
  • GV replica front lip
  • Headlamp cover vent
  • Boot lip spoiler
  • Bonnet pins (original release deleted)
  • Towing straps front & back (original eyes deleted)
  • Wheels; 2 sets, Set 1 for the road 15" 6.5J "Works Motorsport" wrapped with Hankook Ventus v110 195/50/15s, Set 2 for the track 15" 7J Team Dynamics Pro Race 3 wrapped with Federal RS-R 195/50/15s
  • Seats; as the car stands above the drivers seat is standard, but with a serious foamectomy (i.e. foam removed from seat back and base), it actually holds me quite well! Passenger seat deleted. Currently working on fitting GRP bucket seats, will post separately on that later.

This is how you get a full set of wheels to the track!

I know, it's amazing we didn't all come together at the end of race 3! Couple of big oversteer moments, got another good one being uploaded right now, nearly take out one of the Type-Rs trying to get past!

The racing is awesome though, I was so pumped after each race, especially the last one, back out in October, I can't wait!!! Might do a race or two with the Max5 boys too if I'm allowed!

Here's the vid for race 2, first race on Sunday. The track is slightly damp so overtaking was slightly tricky, as can be seen at 12:30!!!!! I got mugged (caught sleeping) at the start, which put me on the back foot, getting the start right from the back is tricky as the light goes out just as the front cars approach the start line and there's a lot of creeping!

Looks like great fun! Many regulations with power in this series?
Nope but your car is placed within different groups on power levels. The ginettas/few ex btcc cars in the top group then stuff like kit cars next down to the slowest cars. Im very tempted to join in 2017 or later 2016 with the exocet after a host of different mods for it over the winter.

I take it your car isn't road legal anymore?

On the ITB's, you'd just use the 3 wires you need, sure there's some info online somewhere on which wire is which, but you'd want ground, signal and 5vref which you can work out with a multimeter. Can PM you some more info tomorrow if it helps?

If your car is road legal you could always drop it down to me and I'll set it up and tune it for you?

Take Rob up on the offer, you won't regret it.

i feel this could still be an expensive season?

No racing is cheap but there is only 5/6 meetings entry fee is ÂŁ200ish and if they are still doing it you get cash back on the number of total entries that could have changed. If you got a car all sorted takes most of the cost out. Considering most track days are ÂŁ150 its not much of a step up.

So, time for a bit of an update!

Finished my final race third in class, so very happy with my first season of competitive motorsport!!!

This is the haul of trophies (only one of them is a best newbie trophy!)

Anyway, back to the car, i bought a few bits over the last months:

New Jackson Racing 4-2-1 exhaust

IMAG0063.jpg

New Black Diamond brake discs and Carbotech XP10 pads on all four corners
IMAG0065.jpg

These brakes are amazing by the way. I've completely had to change the way i brake now, Compared to the Pagid discs and Yellow Stuff pads I've been using up until now they're 100% better. I can now lock up all four wheels with just 70% pressure, the Yellow Stuffs required 100% pressure all the time!

I spruced up the ITB setup a little with clean new pipes and trumpets:

I've shortened the hoses a little now, they were just a bit too long in these pics and the #4 inlet was fouling.

Now, for something a bit more interesting!!! Wossner 84.5mm high compression (12:1) forged pistons.

IMAG0185.jpg

And ZRP H-beam conrods to match

So i've had to have a little work done on the block:

Rebore to 84.5mm, obviously, thanks too Pembrokeshire Pistons

Crankshaft balanced for new pistons and rods (they took loads off both end lobes!):

IMAG0219.jpg

New XPD 6 paddle clutch and Lightweight flywheel (i finally figured out the trick with the claw hammer!!):

IMAG0231.jpg

IMAG0232.jpg

I've fitted it all now too!!!! all except the ITBs.

Plan is to break in the bottom end, then get the Megasquirt working. then once thats in add the ITBs and make that work!

Just realized I can't see the photos. From that last post, the only that shows is the one with the block stripped of everything.

I sure do hope so mate! I've spend enough on it now and i've not started on the head yet!

Got it fired up last night! Ran it for 20 minutes for the first break in run, just dropped the oil, next i'm filling it back up and will be running it for a couple of hours.

Next steps on the build are to get the megasquirt working and to get the new head cleaned up and the ITBs set up on that, i.e. port matched.

I'm still trying to decide what to do about cams, but again i think i will get the MS working with the cams first and then upgrade the cams once that's all set up.

Only just getting started! Ha ha, seriously, I'm in slightly uncharted waters, for me personally anyway, as I've never really done much in the way of this kind of thing!

I really enjoy it tho, it's like a complex puzzle! I just hope I don't end up blowing the bloody thing up in the process!!!!!!!

So a busy christmas has just passed. Didnt get quite as much done on the car as i'd have liked, but a bit of progress was made.

After bolting it all together i ran it in and changed the oil three times. once after 15 minutes running at 3000rpm, once after twenty minutes at 4000rpm and the last oil change after running at 4000rpm for 10 minutes and the anotehr 10 minutes at 6000rpm.

I'd have preferred to do it on a rolling road, so there is actually some torque going through the drive train, really working the engine, but that just wasnt possible.

It all transpired without too much trouble!!

this is the exhaust after running at 6000rpm!

More proof that the engine runs (never mind how tappety it sounds! the head is being changed next!!)

Sorry dont know how to embed a video LINK

And now onto the head. I have a spare which i'm now tidying up:

Ported intake ports

IMAG0312.jpg

and exhaust ports

IMAG0316.jpg

Also did the intake of course, but didnt take any pics...

Also de-shrouded the valves, actually took some before/after pics of a couple, not that its at all clear....

IMAG0301.jpg
IMAG0310.jpg

IMAG0293.jpg
IMAG0308.jpg

ANYWAY, it looks a lot better when its all cleaned up again:

IMAG0311.jpg

IMAG0315.jpg

IMAG0317.jpg

Waiting for some new valves to arrive (+1mm on the exhaust) before its off to the machine shop to have new valve guides installed and the new valve seats ground for the new valves.

The ITBs are almost done, had to recut some pipework and i wanted the whole thing to be as tight as possible (for a DIY job...), but then i found out the throttle position sensor is busted and they're nigh on impossible to get hold of, so...... i've bought another throttle body... with TPS.... it wasnt much ÂŁ60, hopefully it works....

Got an oil cooler and all the necessary plumbing including a remote filter head to make changing the oil folter less of a ballache!

Last but not least i will also will be ordering some Kent Cams through Skuzzle together with solid lifters and stiffer springs. Thats the last piece of the puzzle!!! Once theyre in Skuzzle will also tune the shiiiiit out of the engine and we'll be laughing all the way!!

Not much to do before Rockingham track day on the 6th of March or failing that the Great Western Sprint on the 19th March!!!!!!!!.............................................. after that i've got a tonne of events i want to enter; the WSSCC with ten 15 minute races (8 at Pembrey and two at Castle Combe) and the 750mc Roadsport Series with six 45 minute races at Oulton Park, Silverstone, Snetterton, Cadwell Park, Rockingham and Donington so the engine better be solid too.................. not to mention the dozen sprints and hillclimbs i'm planning!!

          :censor:
