So spent the day sorting out my rocker cover. Stripping the old crappy paint job off, cleaning it up and repainting it.

This was the mock up that my other half made for me in photoshop..

This is what it looked like before. The paint was horrible and it would rub off on your hands if you touched it. Honestly not sure what paint it was, it wasn't flaking or anything but if you were handling the strut brace or the rocker cover the black / red would come off on your hands..

White spirit and steel wool later..

Base coat to clean up the surface (using anodise paint).

Then masked down the middle and sprayed the red anodise paint.

Masked up the red bits very carefully to get dead straight lines. And out came the black paint. Then Lacquer over the top.

Let it dry for 2 hours fitted bit back on and took the car for a blast to cure the paint off.

Thinking tomorrow about doing my intake manifold all red. Bit dubious about removing it though as I dont think I'll be able to get new injector o-rings, or a inlet to head gasket (if I need one).

and these are the paints..

Here's mine, not finished yet as I need to do the lettering in silver.
How do you plan on doing your lettering? I just couldn't get mine to do as I wished. Tried using a cocktail stick as recommended and nearly completely fudged the rest of the paint.

I did that using a cotton swab, cut in half, and using it as a small brush (painting with the stick side, not the cotton side).
Or you could probably just go buying a small brush in the first place :D

Pick up a fair amount of paint, so that you make a drop when touching the letter, then spread it

Yeah, the one with the clear cap.

I base coated it, then red (as its a see through red) then black then was supposed to be white then lacquer.

I'm trying to think of what colour to do my rocker cover, inlet manifold and lettering in my black car.

Red wrinkle looks nice but it might be a bit overplayed. Also I have Red HT leads so it might not work.

I could do them in black wrinkle with red or blue lettering, that might look good. I'm going for a bit of a retro style with the car do having blue highlights everywhere might not look right.

What's the best combo?

How do you plan on doing your lettering?
I'd imagine the best way to do the lettering would be to spray your cam cover first. Put masking take all over the area with the letters, then just cut out each letter from the mask with a sharp knife and spray your letter colour.

That's what I'd do.

Ok so i carried on with the cam cover project tonight when i got home from work. I started off with the cover painted Audi Laser Red and got some 3M striping masking tape and set to work on my design, which wont be everyones cup of tea but i like it and think it looks pretty cool for the track car and a little different. Heres a few pics showing it through the different stages, all that i need to do once ive let the top coat dry over night is give it a clear coat of laquer tomorrow evening and i will be blacking out the letters on the cover too. :D

Some nice ideas here. Mine needs a refresh, so its good to get some tips :)

The VHT Anodised Colour Coat looks good. I was considering spraying the lead cover the same colour as the strut tops and that might be close enough ...
