Just been disassembling my vvt as found metal in the oil which turned out to be a very worn thrust bearing. Will be going back together in due course but just wondered about my rod bearings. Wear doesn’t look too bad to me, but taking the bearing shell off the rod reveals some strange marking. I can’t remember putting assembly lube on the bottom side of the bearing but wonder if this suggests I did and marking up as a result?

If the bearings were ok and you can't feel anything when running a finger nail across it then I think there's nothing to worry about. The shells sit ontop and are static, there shouldnt be any cause for wear unless a bearing had spun

I wouldn’t worry about the marks, they look more like stains, however I would would fit new shells whilst the engine is stripped down.
