Just purchased a MX5 NB 1.8 Sport, but was not impressed with the quality of the sound system. I first upgraded the speakers to see if this would resolve my issues and added sound deadening to the door panels:

This improved the sound, but I still was not happy with the sound, after reading various threads on forums, I decided that the only option was to replace the stereo.

After reading various stereo reviews, I found that you get much more stereo for your money if you buy a single din stereo, as opposed to a double din stereo, so I opted for a DAB Single Din stereo with hands free Bluetooth:

I also needed to buy a aerial splitter so I could use the same aerial for FM and DAB Broadcasts:

I can tell you honestly that I was a bit worried about buying the spitter as I was not sure if it would work and it was quite expensive. The stereo came with a windscreen mounted aerial, but I did not fancy taking apart the A Pillar trim and mounting the aerial on the windscreen so I took a punt at the splitter. I must say that the splitter works brilliantly, not sure if it is because we have a good reception around our area (I'd check the DAB Broadcasts in your area first) but I am very impressed!!

This stereo also has a rear USB socket for iPod, iPhone, Android Phone and USB Stick, so I purchased a 5M USB extension lead (would probably get away with 3M, but I played it safe) and routed it to the Centre Console storage box:

The cable was routed through the existing opening for the boot and filler cap release levers.

I also mounted the handsfree mic next on the steering column, it is very discrete and I have had no issues with the mic picking up my voice during calls.

The stereo came with a single din cage and I purchased another single din cage from eBay for about ÂŁ4, put them both in the double din opening, one on top of the other and secured them in place with the tabs. I had an old cubby from a Vauxhall Astra in my shed, so I fitted this in the lower single din cage and the stereo in the upper single din cage.

The sound is now amazing!!

But although the console now looked much better (not a fan of the silver), I made the decision to change the colour of the stereo surround, and the following links helped me remove the Centre Console and trim parts:

Once the trim parts were removed, I resprayed the components with Black Plastidip:

I watched a number of Youtube videos, and managed to get a really professional finish, basically it's 4 very light coats and patience.

I now have a great sounding DAB stereo and black stereo surround.

I hope this helps if you are considering doing the same.
