Prominant Smell Of Petrol On Start Up?

442 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  tom williams
on a few mornings in a row now i have had a rather strong smell of petrol on start up. will still start up normally no problems there!

just wandered whether it is a broken fuel line near the tank as its right behind me, havent noticed any drop in mpg yet though!?!

could it also be a slightly tired fuel filter? (longshot i know)

anything would help. just getting tired racking my brain without spending a day stripping the cars interior out!

cheers

These cars over fuel when cold, does it do it once warm?
Exhaust manifold gasket? Check for sooty staining around the flange of the manifold. Remember that the interior air pick-up lives behind the bulk-head of exhaust manifold, it's likely the engine is just running rich during warm-up (which is correct) but you are smelling the fuel/exhaust gases leaking from the manifold. Once it's all nice and hot the flange may create a nice seal as it expands.

I had a similar issue on my old car, cured by buying a new turbo manifold and replacing the gasket.
its literally a quick 5 second period, from like turning it on and then getting off my drive, and the smell is gone! odd.. then it goes, it does sound like i have got an exhaust leak from somewhere, could this really be that simple? may need to spend an hour or two taking the exhaust apart and renewing the gaskets!

You don't happen to reverse off the drive do you?
