START - Control panel - Add/remove programs

Do one at a time.

also to remove start up programs that you dont need and make your comp run quicker:

Start - Run - type "msconfig" and press enter. Go to start up and deselect most of the programs. (if you have vista type "msconfig" into the start search bit)

As above, or the best method if you have a system disc is to do a fresh install, eliminating any hidden/lurking problems.
You will end up with the laptop back to it "just new" state, when you start to delete programmes loads of ddls and junk are left behind, this builds up and slows down the laptop.
It's called something similar but different under vista/win 7 - I'm on my XP box now so can't check but control panel is the place to start.

you're best off with a wipe and clean install unless you want to keep the porn stash or apps
On my Vista laptop it's Start , Control Panel , Programs , Uninstall a Program
2
Start -> Run

type CMD

then type

PCCHATTERISNOTFORTHEMX5/ROADSTERFORUMSECTION.EXE

press enter.

download revo uninstaller, and that is far better than the windows add/remove.

But if you have the money just pave and repath, ie format and reinstall from new, you will be thankful in months to come

Can recommend Tuneup Utilities. FoC demo for 30 days. Used it for years...gives your PC an oil change every day.
Easy peasy deleting programmes and files + a million other things.

If he cant uninstall a program, a full OS reinstall might be a bit above his capabilities!
Best to give it to a friend wot knows about computers.
valid point - I've now got an image in my head of someone standing over a laptop with a bottle of mr sheen and wondering what to do next.
As DC said, might be worth getting someone with IT experience to have a look. If you haven't got any mates that can help, I'd say just pay someone to do it (I've got a good contact if you're anywhere near Cambridge).

I use a laptop and desktop PC every day for my work, but know almost nothing about computers...
