Didn't weigh it on it's own but will do. The 16.6kg included the AC compressor, compressor mount, some AC lines and the AC fan.

Will see if Vindi/Russell can make me a carbon fibre mug.
I'm suprised you haven't got a flocked Mug

Looking good mate. So much neater than mine. I'm gonna be embarrassed when If our two cars get together. Mines a bit of a ten Pinter.

Quick question: what diamiter is your exhaust?

Btw. We're out at oulton on the 13 of April if you fancy?

Exhaust is 1.85". It's too small for my car really and probably hurting BHP up the rev range. I didn't realise the bore when I was buying it though.

Ideally it needs to be on a nice NA 1.6 and I could do with a 2.25" one. I love it but guess I'll have to sell it at some point and probably have to have one made as I just don't think I'll get what I want off the shelf.

I've bought a Racing Beat 4-2-1 manifold to replace the Mazdaspeed 4-2-1 that's starting the blow. Once that's on I'll sort an exhaust to match it.

Oulton sounds great, but that's my birthday and already have plans. I'm trying to get onto Rockingham 17th March for ?135 if you fancy that?

Interesting. Going to get a lightweight straight through (ish) system made up for mine. Trying to work out what the smallest bore is that i can get away with.

Shame about Oulton. I'd be up for rockingham too but the deadline is a bit tight, All the wishbones are off mine at the mo and it's pretty slow going. Busy with work.

Maybe we can sort something for May?

May sounds good.

I fitted the carbon SPA mirrors today using stainless M6 Security Torx. Pleased with them and happy with how well the mounts have turned out.

We opted to simplify the mounts from my idea of using them to sort the incorrect mirror angle out and instead I gently tweeked the mirror arms to have less of a bend in them. They're now perfectly horizontal and bang in the middle of the adjustment range on the ball and socket joint.

Image

Will take them off again now to anodise the mounts black.

Cheers dude. The paint was Plasticote and they literally just call that shade 'Orange'.

Have just weighed the car again...

It's heavier than last time!
Image

VOSA chap was there so had a chat. Apparently the weighbridge there is accurate to within 50kg and varies dependant on the weather.

Luckily I've had a very kind invite to use some proper scales. Will report back when I have...

+/- 50kg ......doh! Fine for 20,000 HGV I guess. Will be interesting to see how light you can make it.

Enjoy Rockingham. I had fun there last year. Though I remember spinning rather too much......dry morning, followed by wet afernoon.

Let me know if you do book as I might try to pop over and say HI.

really impressed with your build!

I'm getting mine road worthy first, then working out what to do with it although I've got a few custom bits being made up as we speak including some mirror mounts strangely like yours!

I'm West Sussex based as well and know pease pottage and hand cross well but have never seen your car around? when mines on the road it would be interesting to see the difference between a standard 1.8 and a stripped one.

All the best, and if you need an extra pair of hands pm me, I'm in Copthorne and an Auto-Electrician...

Love this car.

Love this car.
Cheers Nick!

I'm loving it at the moment too. Had a great drive this weekend. Just have a badly blowing exhaust manifold at the moment that's ticking away and sounds like I have a 1.6 with stuck tappets. I can't wait to get my Racing Beat 4-2-1 (it needs posting to me) and get it fitted. I also have a chunk of understeer post fitting the non-PAS rack which I'm putting down to me messing the alignment up. Need to get it booked into WIM asap when I'm next available.

truley an epic amout of effort gone in to this

just out of interest is there much differance between the weight saving on the whole car ? as im considering this but wouldnt be going to all these lengths but take the ac and obvous things out and loose a couple of st lol.

is the car noticabley quicker?

Cheers chaps.

I need to get it weighed properly, but its lost around 150kg at this point. I've managed to add a substantial roll bar too.

I'd say it drives quite differently, but I've experienced the change in gradual small steps as I've done things. I also drive quite a few other cars so it's hard for me to reference back to what it felt like initially.

I think this summarises the change quite well... I recently came across an S2000 being driven quite hard on an A road*. We both pulled out to overtake a string of 4 slower moving cars. During that overtake we accelerated from 45ish to about 110 and I closed up the gap between us and as he pulled in I carried on past him.

Obviously weight has more bearing on acceleration at lower speeds and no relation on top speed (where drag governs speed). So it soon runs out of 'go' at higher speed. I had a run in with an e46 325i and I was quicker up to around 60MPH but from 60 - 120ish* he increasingly had the legs on me. Obviously a 325i is hardly a very quick car either..

So, it's not become seriously quick, but it's now got that kind of level of performance. More telling will be on track I imagine, as it definitely slows down and changes direction quicker now.

Best comparison performance wise that I've owned would probably be an S1 Elise B&C Super 160. The Elise was probably 180kg lighter than the MX5 is now but had similar power at 150-odd bhp. With a passenger and a full tank the Elise would probably be only a bit quicker than the MX5 is now.

* In Germany, on a derestricted section of Autobahn.

Thanks Ste. Mine definitely feels much sharper without a passenger/ full tank of fuel, sounds it too, so I am not surprised - that has to be less than 150kilos difference too!

Edit; See you at Rocky? I'd like a look/ to pick your brain on a few things?

Also, your AC weight, how heavy was the fan??
Image
Cant be 4kilos+ surely??
