New Kitchen

Not had alot of time for MX5 stuff or getting on the forum recently but for anyone who's interested I have been doing this:

Old kitchen stripped out

New kitchen bits in the dining room

Concrete floor broken up and dug down, back wall stripped

The mess in the front garden

Bit of wiring & plumbing work

Back wall synthaproofed and a new concrete screed floor

I worked out that that floor took 2 tonnes of sand and cement!!!

Old window removed and boarded up while the new one is made

New door in, awaiting glass

Back wall plaster boarded

Had a good clean up so the house doesn't look like a building site.

That's the progress this week, work commences again on Monday. I'm working on it with 2 experienced guys from work and yes you guessed it, this is how I spend my annual holiday

good job so far, looks like hard work

That your trade?
No as it happens, I actually design and project manage the build of exhibition stands. I get my hand dirty on site and at home tho so I can get by at this stuff. The guys I am working with are contractors my company use and they're very competent

This is a GREAT learning curve for me

Looking good.
Finished mine a couple of months back - huge sense of acievement. Had never really done much in the way of house related DIY before we bought our first place at the end of last summer, think I have been on the same learning curve as you! Has been a good excuse to buy a load of new tools though!!

What's the idea behind the synthaproof? That's a new product to me. Whatsitfur??? Does it dry 'sticky'. Does it paint on? What goes on the top? Etc. Share your wisdom.

Synthaproof is a paint on damp proof membrane. It is bitumen based and VERY sticky when wet but not so when dry. I believe you can plaster or tile over the top of it but we put a plasterboard wall to aid ventilation
Ok here's this weeks' kitchen update

Units starting to go in

Worktop oiling

Mess, mess, mess

Floor tiles and underfloor heating down

Fully functioning kitchen, still lots to do but it's all in and working (except dishwasher)

Induction hob and extractor

Sink

Double oven and cupboards

Check out the size of that slab of glass

Door finally glazed

Still left to do:

Wall tiling & all grouting
Fit dishwasher
Fit under cabinet lighting / sockets
Fit kickboards and kickboard LED lighting
Make good walls & ceiling and decorate
Fit cupboard door handles

Good work, your 1 step ahead of me. Going to start putting the units in tomorrow and the work top template is being measured next monday. All very exciting as we're kind of bored of microwave meals and the camping stove, and washing up in the bath!
that looks really impressive
I love it thats beautiful. You have the same boiler as me a vaillant, similar size too. But you should see the plumbing in my kitchen from the boiler and taps its awful and I by myself just cannot afford to get it all replumbed neatly to the wall. I have ikea free standing kitchen but two shelves still not put up and doors are off the sink unit because of the bad plumbing in place.
SWMBO is raving about these worktops! If we may ask, where from? And..um ?????

V nice job all round

Thanks for all the comments
Really pleased with it, can't wait to get it 100% finished, although that's gonna take a while as I'm back to work tomorrow

The walnut worktops are from a company called Kitchen Surplus, here's a link http://www.kitchen-surplus.co.uk/

Although I actually purchased them through their eBay store, http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/Kitchen-Surplus__W0QQ_armrsZ1

Cost for a 3m x 620mm x 40mm worktop was £230 plus delivery when I got them but looks like they have gone up to £250 now, compared to £500 at B&Q for the same thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keeping the worktop grain continuing in the same direction rather than turning with the worktop is a very effective touch.
