Hi Guys

New to the forum so just thought I'd share my new project with you.

I'm just part way through doing a 1JZ engine swap into my MX5 with all the donor parts from a Lexus Soarer. So engine, transmission and diff from the Lexus are going in. Removed all of the interior parts I don't need like A/C, Fan box, Heater matrix etc as I'm doing it primarily for Drag, but may do some circuit stuff as well.

The aim of the project....... to beat a Veyron up the Quarter mile ! I beleive they do 10.2 quarters so that's the target. Had an Evo a few years ago which did high 9's in the end, so got some experience of what works and what doesn't with Drag. I'm hoping for a sub 1000kg car and 500+hp in the first stage, then more power after that.

Nice to hear some of your comments on the project. Trying to get it done for next summer, but typically only spending a few hours a week on it at the minute so not sure.

Thanks

The trans and the diff is from the Lexus, whats known as a R154 box with a plated diff. Stock suspension at the moment I'm thinking, as in stock mounted. Will probably go down the coilover route. The quickest Drag cars would move to a 4 link rear setup but it's not that usable on the track then.

Yeah, I don't think a 1JZ or 2JZ has been done in the UK before- I could be wrong - so we'll see if it turns out as good as I'm hoping!

Running into issues with sump clearance at the minute. I'm in need of a manual rack urgently but can't post in the Wanted section yet as I'm a noob!

Had to cut away part of the sump and trim the subframe and the engine sits about the same height as the bonnet, so to air on the side of caution, would like it to sit 1/2 to 1 inch lower yet.

Yeah I've been following the Miata Turbo thread, but (no disrespect to what the guy has acheived) he's done a lot of things on a tight budget, and started off with an N/A engine and turbo'd that, and many things have been adapted to fit. I'm planning on taking a bit more time and effort on doing mine and want it to look as stock as possible.

2JZ is not that dissimilar to 1JZ, most people beleive the 1JZ is the best engine Toyota ever made but doesn't get the hype of the 2JZ as in the Supras. The heads flow better on the 1JZ but there more capacity on the 2JZ, so some people make a 1.5JZ with the 1JZ head and 2JZ short block. Plus I got the Lexus donor car for a song! The guy thought the head gasket had gone when there was a leak on the water pump!

Looking forward to keeping you guys posted on this,,,

Very much looking forward to seeing updates. Do you expect to have to modify the engine bay much if at all?

Just trimmed a few pieces of the engine bay, near where the fuel lines run as it interfered with the exhaust manifold, and removed the front slam panel altogether where it joins the two chassis legs together, and made up a loop bar to mount the intercooler in so I have much more space than before, just not as good if I have a crash :-(

Most of my headaches are around the subframe and the sump on the new engine so I can get it to sit as low as possible. Just need a bit more time to get it to sit another 1/2 inch lower so I can fabricate the engine mounts, and then build the engine.

Many such jobs require a new subframe. There is a v6 thread around with some pics that are well worth a look at. They were conciddering offering such parts at the start of there build, but later ignored the question of supply. Still the pics look good, and it's a good workable design.

Edit: Post 12 http://www.mx5nutz.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=108524#entry1292184

Certainly food for thought. I like how the bar with the rack mountings bends at the ends and blends in. There are also subframes offered for v8 conversions that might be worth seeing. Flying Miata do one I believe
