Hi,

I am a newbie looking to buy my first MX 5. I have researched as much as possible into the MX5 Mk1 & 2. I have a budget of ?3,500 the car as such needs to be automatic only (licence automatic), in mint condition, low mileage as I will be a daily user of the car.

1: Any views regarding MX5 City specialists, I have found them very helpful with regards to my requirments but I am aware that I will be paying a premium but then the car should be to a degree in mint condition.

http://www.mx5city.com/stockdetails.html?StockID=1202 this car is on for ?3350 but low milage and appears to be in top condition. MX5 City also have a silver car which will be posted tomorrow which he says is just as beautiful.

2: Dandycars in London: http://www.dandycars.com/Mazda-MX5s/property/In_Stock/h519_JAF.htm on for ? 3495 OTR efinished in velocity red (i love the colour but cloth interior, no roll bars or wind deflector. Any views about Dandycars?

3: Last car is a 1998 model new front but no extras low milage and heated glass roof (spoken to the owner it's an import serviced last year and in top condition although I would have a n independent inspector check it) Auto trader http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201015356690130/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-to/4000/body-type/convertible/transmission/automatic/make/mazda/page/3/postcode/bs44gr/radius/1500?logcode=p. This is on for ?2,900.

Any help would be great I am not sure whether the Mk1 is a more classic beautiful car than the Mk2?

Welcome to the forum.

I would recommend a Mk1 as it is a more 'classic' and 'beautiful' car, all in my biased opinion of course. Also remember that the Mk1 does weigh about 150kg less than the Mk2 which is like carrying an additional 2 people, constantly. However, if you don't really push your cars too hard then a Mk2 would be perfectly good, and the last link you posted looks like a nice well looked after car.

The top link you posted does seem very over priced. And it has Lexus lights which are, erm.. and also note that the roll bar on that is actually a style bar and won't do you any good in the event of an actual roll.

Even at this time of year I would say spend a max of ?2500. The key is to find a well looked after RUST FREE example. Imports would be your best bet for this. Buy it, give it a good service, and enjoy many years of happy motoring

Hi,

Thanks for the quick replies. Yes I am very worried about the prices for the 2 MK 1's. I do need an automatic so not a much choice I do like the 1998 MK 2. I loved this but someone beat me to it sigh http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201014356266917/sort/priceasc/usedcars/maximum-mileage/up_to_80000_miles/price-to/3000/transmission/automatic/price-from/2000/model/mx-5/make/mazda/radius/1501/postcode/bs44gr/page/1?logcode=p

Auto trader:
1: I saw this but how can it be 2003? http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201010354257720/sort/priceasc/usedcars/maximum-mileage/up_to_80000_miles/price-to/3000/transmission/automatic/price-from/2000/model/mx-5/make/mazda/radius/1501/postcode/bs44gr/page/1?logcode=p.

I have a 3yr old so I want a safe car is the Mk1 alright as compared to the Mk2? In addition do MK2 & Mk1 hold there value? The Mk2 I posted is an import which she said is in lovely condition accept a small scuff on the boot and the cloth interior a bit of fraying on the edges but for ?2900 how much would it cost to deal with the boot scuff? Is it expensive or worth putting in leather seats?

does the mk1 only weigh 900KG ?

welcome to the forum BTW.

no you dont need a hard top for the winter, as for changing the wheels it just depends on what you want and what you want to spend.

Hard top is not a neccesity, the heaters in the mx5 are one of the best ive ever had in a car.

I'd say from what you have said about yourself you would be better with a mk2. get a rust free example, but the prices you have quoted from the dealers are very overpriced. I sometimes wonder if anyone actually buys their cars!

I think the airbad and extra safety features in the mk2 would suit you better.

As for holding their value, yes they do. a MK1 will not decrease unless you do starship miles and the condition is poor, but even then not by much. MK2's have been coming down in price but seem to have levelled off a little.

Best of luck

Daz

I wrote a massive post on here but decided not to post it. I personally won't go there again. They had a bad name on here but being on my door step I thought id give them a try. Lets say they have been shocking on a couple of occasions and I wont be going back there. Very expensive place - for everything and their mechanics are monkies. Enough said from me.

Hi Nutz members,

Well my search continues for an Automatic (so hard to find) I can't believe how many people either embellish or lie about the condition of their car it's a shame as not only do they waste their time but certainly mine
. I have seen so many beautiful manual models sigh!!!!

DavesBRG5 really appreciate your help I like the look of this one the owner is away working so in converstaion regarding it at the moment http://www.gumtree.c...3/56759603.html. What I do know is that A/C works a main factor for me as I have a 3 yr old in good condition looks like he has spent a bit on it tho.

Tried calling this owner never answers bit cheap do you think?? Gut instinct thinks somehing a bit fishy http://www.gumtree.c...8/56755068.html

I ave contacted Ray a Nutz member re his car yesterday & MX5 specialists like http://www.goodwoodsportscars.co.uk/index.html not your over inflated dealerships like MX5 City thanks to Nutz members I stopped splashing the cash out there!!!!

Avoid Dandycars at all costs. I made the mistake and had to pay for it, hard! I didn't even know this site existed before I got my car otherwise I wouldn't have gone to them.
