Hi, i've had this red mx5 for a while now, I have issues which I will list below. If anyone could help out on how much the repair costs would be and what to do with it, I would be very happy!

Issues:
Clear coat is flaking and paint may be starting to ruin too
Dents in left front wing
I would like to remove the Immobiliser
Seals both sides need doing and potentially arch's however they do not seem bad.
Soft top needs re doing.

Other than this and no MOT馃槄 the car is sound. Now I want to keep it, it has cost me 拢1000 2 years ago, this was with mx5 parts race exhaust! Would it be worth the repairs and hope for an investment scenario and enjoy driving it, or should I sell it as is and be done with it?

Any advice help and points in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

this is variable, where you live & local labour costs can be different to me - also if you pay a premium for 'known' repairers?

so, these are sorta normal for an old car?

immobiliser? so UK Mx5 or aftermarket addition on a 'grey' import Eunos?

weld repair & paint is expensive, what do you value the car ?

I live in bexhill near Hastings Eastbourne way. I'd like to get the car road worthy so I'll start with an MOT

Seals are important so an idea on cost for that would be great.

Immobilizer seems to be factory fitted as I have a special contact key that looks pretty original. It has messed up on me in the past leaving me stranded in the middle of the road until I figured out to disconnect the battery and attach again and use special key to deactivate it. I want to avoid that one at all costs!!

I value the car as it is at 1k still. Which is why I'm weighing up the options.

Thanks for the reply as well!

how long is a piece of string?

plate repair or genuine Mazda panels?

also, you never know the extent of the rot untill you cut it open - sometimes theres a lot of cutting:unsure:

ah.

separate immobiliser key? if so, its not OEM.
^^THIS(y)

Welding and paint is going to set you back around

700-1000 per side for welding
3-5k for complete respray
or, more if you are unlucky:confused:

(in my opinion) unfortunately welding is split into about 80% prep, 10% weld & 10% tidyup and if you are paying by the hour this gets unfunny quickly:censored:

To give a rough price on how much it takes to make a good car out of a bad one.

I have spent over 拢10,000 (don't ask) to make a good car out of a rust free shell. It turned out to need 1 sill and the other side needed tidying up and a new end plate, the cowel/A pillar had started to go, there was rust under the front wings so all the seams needed doing. It had a respray by a reputable garage, with a GV panel manipulated and fitted.

Engine swap, ECU, coilovers, wheels and rubber, it all adds up.

That said, don't be discouraged. It is a labour of love after all.

I think you need to ask yourself what you want the car for.
Mint car shows gotta spend the money to make it pretty.

Reliable fun haver weekend car.
Get that immobilser taken out. Fresh service n belts work to mot standards and maintain as you go along.

These cars are fairly simple to work on compared to modern cars.

I had a fairly mint car i restored, i always felt guilty battering it down a country lane, now i have crusy rusty mot compliant fun haver. Well 2 days left of mot.

May 2021 I bought an 03 JAP IMPORT in from Devon, where it had languished in a taxi company wifes hands for many years, it was an auto in silver, pvc hood, 1.6 270k, but described as zero rust on sills and the best underside their garage guys[ they ran a taxi business] had ever had on the garage lift..i gave 2500 home for it, running and MOT until november that year.. today its standing me finished approx 9k.. it was rebuilt totally the only thing that hasn't seen removal is the 6inch rear axle assembly and its a slip.. fully door and wings off and screen out repaint no rust anywhere on top well a 2p size spot on the right sill in front of the rear wheel rear arches are solid as are the sills you could bounce a 2lb hammer offa them and not worry.. the csrren was renewed, and seats were replaced with leather, carpets were replaced with new ones the undercarpets were now rubber, the hood is now mohair and navy, the wheels were replaced with minilites by revolution 6 x15, the suspension and steering were rebuilt using a mix of meister shock kit and cheaper adjustable rears, track rod ends ,ball joints, as were any bushes, the anti roll bars were upgraded, the auto became a manual and the engine was replaced and actually rebuilt, white smoke in the mornings using oil and we found tat t the oil ring were fused on the pistons neglible bore wear honed with new 4mm oil rings bloody gear box replaced twice, using a 1.8 lightened flywheel and 1.8 clutch , all brakes still std with s/s aeroquip lines but were rebuild internally with seals and slide pillars.. a lot done by me , paint by specialist ,engine same, vents in bonnet, new battery, new wiring from live battery terminal to starter heavy duty, new seat belts new silver alloy door mirrors moved froward like the original japanese alloy ones and a navy hardtop for winter use, new reg plates.. its an ongoing projcet as is anything i rebuild as even with 40 odd years of motor trade experience and 45 builds sometimes it doesn't just look or feel right-angle, but its a head turner and goes well and handles like a go kart.. i can do a pic or 2 if you wish.. will

A very minor thing but a red '91 car would originally have been a solid red with no clearcoat, so if clearcoat is peeling it's already been resprayed (hardly surprising on a 30+ year old car).
