Low Speed Car Is "kangaroo-Ing" When In Gear

Hi guys.

This has only really become apparently ever since I changed my engine and clutch.

If I'm in traffic, or coming to a stop, the car will sometime end up being quite jumpy, kangaroo'ing. Not like learner noob level but enough to be really annoying and make horrible noises, its more so when it's in overrun / creeping forward at very low speed in 1st gear or 2nd gear.

Other than that, driving normally is perfectly fine.

I've replaced the engine mounts with Stiffer Mazdaspeed mounts, and the car also have Super Pro Void Filler's in the diff bushes. Also has a lightened flywheel but surely that can't be it as I've driven other cars with light fly's and they don't do this?!?! :/

PPF is aligned etc.

I have some other issues but idk if they're really related tbh.

Would appreciate some advice as this is driving me nuts

If not clutch judder then if it was a 1.8 I'd say check the throttle position switch, but I'm not certain the 1.6 behaves the same way.

The 1.8 has a variable TPS (which the 1.6 doesn't) but it also has a switch closure to say the throttle's closed. I think (though I forget if) the 1.6 has a pair of switches - one for closed and one for wide open (someone put me right pls). Anyway the 1.8 judders and surges on very light throttle if that switch is out of position. Maybe the 1.6 does too.

To align it (1.8 version - need to confirm if 1.6 is the same) you need a multimeter and feeler gauges. Use the meter to find which pair of pins on the TPS plug are shorted together when the throttle's closed but disconnect when it opens. Open the throttle a little and slip an 0.3mm feeler gauge onto its end stop. When the throttle closes on that, the switch should still be closed. Swap it for an 0.4mm feeler gauge and the switch should now be open. If it's wrong, loosen the TPS and turn it by hand till it just closes when held open 0.3mm. Sounds like an absurdly fine adjustment but it's easier than it sounds.

Sure it's not just the clutch bedding in combined with the added stiffness of bushes and mounts which is exaggerated by the lightened flywheel? Also is the clutch aligned correctly and free of contamination?

Clutch has done over 1k kms or so, and I had the clutch replaced at Skuzzle's, he made sure it was aligned etc etc.

Clutch has no contamination at all. Functions fine tbh.

I can do the launches and burnouts and very honourable SHIFTU LOCKU.

I take it we're talking about driving really slowly with the foot completely off the clutch?

It sounds to me like the fairly normal surging you can get at very low speeds in low gears, accentuated by having a lighter flywheel. It may help to enrich the mix at those low RPMs (I guess we're talking sub-2000 RPM, maybe 1400-1500 RPM?) to take any lean-surging factors out of the equation.

jajajaja dis.

Still on stock ECU so I can't play with mixture :x. Might play with Idle speed?

Is it a stock clutch as well, aftermarket ones can grab more making the car lurch.

If you're running the stock ECU...

In my experience, that's just a symptom of driving a car at low speed in a low gear with a light flywheel. I don't think I've ever driven any small (<2L) 4cyl which drives smoothly in this situation.

Does it do the same in 3rd when close to idle speed?

I think we do need a vid to see how bad it is...

The ITB's aren't on yet John. Engine is standard.. Ish. Stock ECU, etc.

K, fine I'll get a vid tonight when I come back home.

Stock Exedy clutch. Might be something I'll have to deal with? Although, my friend's car's don't do that. Idk.

Mine does something like this too, it's as if the car switches between two maps on and off throttle in slow rolling traffic. I'm interested to hear if anyone has a solution.

It will be the iscv struggling due to the light flywheel, come to the grasshopper tomorrow and I will have a look
I'd love to, but nightshift :(

And yeah McL, thinking about it it does seem like that.

Also, today I was getting idle droop issues.

Might give resetting the base idle a go.

I should probably raise RPM because of the Flywheel?
