Lhd Lorry Pulling Out Of A Layby

I was driving home from work earlier and all seemed well, looking forward to the week end so on.

In the distance was a foreign lorry parked up in a layby, as I got quite close to it I noticed it moving slightly so I thought I'd take some care. Next thing, he pulls out right infront on me, no signal, nothing, so I slam the brakes on and lock up, I pump the brake and get the car to eventually just stop in the wet conditions so I didn't pile into the back of him. I couldn't overtake due to traffic going the other way.

A few seconds later the panic leaves me and I just couldn't believe it had just happened.

The lorry then pulls onto a roundabout, no signal again, and goes all the way round so he can go back the otherway down the road he just cut me up on....probably completely unaware an accident was narrowly avoided.

It's the closest I've ever come to crashing a car. I was a little shaken to say the least.

I know it doesn;t help I have a dark coloured low sports car, but you hear horror stories about foreign lorry drivers getting not a lot in the way of disciplinary actions when accidents occur.

Although I thought I was being cautious, it wasn't cautious enough....

I was wondering what that FB thing was about.

Glad you and your car are okay mate. The amount of times on my daily commute I have to toot my horn to let people know I am there I am this close to getting a daily hack.

Sadly this is often the case with some drivers.
Luckily for you you were paying attention and nobody was too close behind, a close have indeed!
Glad to hear you and your car came through unscathed.

10 years or so ago I was in my little Fiesta on the M25 in the middle lane approaching the M11 turn off, this turn off takes one of the lanes from the M25 so the far right two lanes are for the M25 and the far left for the M11.

The traffic was reasonably heavy but travelling at around 50 mph. All of a sudden the back end of the car stepped out to the right and even though I counter-steered it just kept going until I was facing the slow lane, across the middle alane travelling sideways at around 50 mph.

A foreign lorry driver had pulled out of lane 1 and into the middle lane, not noticing that I was in it. He clipped my nearside rear quarter and pushed me so that I eventually ended up sideways across the front of his cab. He then steered me into the hardshoulder and stopped.

The police said it was a common occurrence with foreign lorry drivers not seeing small cars when changing lanes, apparently some of the cars are hit hard enough to propel them off the far side of the lorry.

Blimey!

I was very lucky today that no one was behind me. I shudder to think what would have happened if I were on my motorbike.

We saw the very soon aftermath of what DOES happen when a car doesnt see a motorbike the other evening, I wont be getting a motorbike anytime soon

I got clipped on the rear driver's side corner by a six tonner the other day, as he was trying to pull into the inside lane, not seeing me in front of him or he just didn't look!

Lucky it was in slow traffic, I didn't have the handbrake on, so he just bumped me four feet or so! Ended up with a few scratches and some orange paint on the corner of the bumper, no damage behind!

Surprising how flexible the bumpers are and how much of a blind spot lorries have!

You'd be surprised how big the blind spots are, if you tuck in on the drivers side behind the cab you can't be seen in mirror or by looking out of the window which makes getting onto motorways hard work the fighter pilot technique of leaning forwards and looking back just about does it but if the arsewipe in a car in front who is not getting up to motorway speed up the slip road panics and brakes ........ On the subject of inattention tho' if you had the number of people pull out of side roads or across motorway lanes and not see a truck 12ft high 8 1/2 feet wide and 30 feet long painted bright yellow you would be wondering if they could actually see at all.
