Hi, ive been preparing the nb for a long time now, decided to finish everything this weekend, by getting the turbo, mani and downpipe on etc and trying it out on the basemap. Needed to clock the turbo so after getting the cir clip off, i remove the coldside housing and find damage to the fully reconditioned turbo i bought from blackcatmotorsport a few months back. Im pretty gutted and pretty angry. Ive gone to alot of trouble and this is my daily driver so ill now have to put it all back to stock.

Might be obvious, but would the damage actually cause a problem? Presumably i could end uo with an air leak going past the seal?

The remnants of the broken bit of ally were all ground up inside the housing ready to be blown into my engine upon first use! Wondering who black cat use for refubing their turbos. - edit, its midland turbos. I still have the bit of paper.

I don't see any evidence of the bit of diffuser being present when the turbo was rebuilt. The fracture face looks the same blasted finish as the rest. If you still have the fragment, by all means complain, but if you don't I'd expect it was built like that.

FWIW, it's grey iron, not ally.

Stop smacking the impeller with the comp outlet, but apart from that, there doesn't look anything wrong with it (except that it's a reman turbo). Pull the pin out of the cover and get it put back on. The o ring's there mainly to stop oil leaks, not boost leaks so you're not going to see any issues from the bit of cracked diffuser.

The remnants of the cracked off piece were all ground off into tiny pieces like i said, ready to be blown straight into my engine on first start! I cleaned them out with a toothbrush, they were all grund up inside the groove. if it were me, it would be in one big chunk, but like i said, it was all ground up pieces stuck in the groove.

And you think its perfectly fine to use as it is?? If the o ring is to stop oil, then surely ill end up with oil where it shouldnt be?

The broken piece of diffuser shouldn't have been anywhere near the ret ring groove unless the impeller was damaged. It wouldn't be readily ground up either. Are you trying to show the rough surface by the groove in the video or is there something in the volute?

The stuff in the groove was probably blasting grit that didn't get cleaned up. Troubling in itself, you certainly don't want that through your engine, but that's the slings and arrows of buying reman turbos. As long as the volute is clean, it's generally in pretty good shape, but equally, you might get a replacement turbo if you complain - but that might come with its own set of complications.

If you want to run it, wash the volute out with brake cleaner and blow it out with compressed air if you have the facilities.

Hi, thanks for the reply.. I presumed as it was a recon, maybe it was recon'd due to the piece of metal breaking off the diffuser, being mashed up by the impellar and causing the previous owner engine damage?
But yes, you may well be right that it wasnt actually pieces of the turbo in the groove, and it was from sand blasting,, as the bits were very small, like grit, so that would make sense. They just didnt clean it before supplying it. Personally i think its a pretty poor service for midland turbos to supply a recon turbo in that state anyway, even without sand blasting grit being present.
But yes, in the video i was trying to show an area in the grove that was rough/damaged. - that was where most of the grit was, in a kind of stuck-together lump.
I have cleaned it very thoroughly and put back together. Its all up and running on the base map (ms3 mini from bofi). Seems to be ok. Base map seems ok too, starts and idles well. Afr's look good, up to 3500rpm. - as i dare not rev any higher - just incase,, until i get it tuned properly..

But aside from the damaged turbo, im very pleased, alot of work and money over the last 3 years building the car at the weekends as its my daily. Just hope the tuners can squeeze me in soon. 🙏

I have found Midland to be very good. Having read every turbo car advert in the world claim there was no movement in the shaft, I took mine to get fixed. They called me in. Showed me brand new one's have play in them, and gave me new studs and gasket for free.
