Hard Top Wiring

I have tried searching for an answer but I can't seem to find one.

I have had a hardtop on my Mk2 for a while now and eventually got round to making a loom to join the pigtail wire on the HT to the wires in my car.

The HT has a 3 pin plug, where as my car only has two.

I found a guide online stating that it should be wired live to live and the neutral/earth to the other two pins in the HT wiring.

I have done this and it doesn't work.

Could it be the soft top switch that I'm sure I've read about somewhere.

The soft top had a heated glass rear window to begin with.

Thanks :)

Right I forgot about this until I tried to sort it again yesterday but still no luck.

Here is a pic of the loom on the hard top with three connectors.

The wiring from the car has two separate female spade connectors.

How would I wire this up to work?

Also I noticed online that people have said about having a light on the dash when it's on.

Mine's never done this but I do have a light on the switch so is that normal?

So you are making a harness straight from the connector to the window? This will of course by-passes the switch which is part of the soft top harness.

I'm going from the original harness in the car which has two connectors to the harness on the hard top which has three connectors.

So effectively bridging the two.

(Hope that makes sense)

The harness on the hrw will not come off of the two spade connectors it looks like they're going to snap if i keep pulling them

I gecha your fiting a mk2 hard top to a mk1? The third wire on the mk2 is to the aforementioned switch completing the circuit back to the switch. Test the 3 wire harness 2 of the wires will be spliced together these provide a common earth (so it doesn't matter which you connect) the other is your live feed.

In that case the car should have a 3 pin connector, not 2. No way it can work with only 2 wires. Did ths soft top window work?

This is the back of the MK2 connector car side. Blk/red is the +12v , blk is your ground, blk/ wht is the return ground to the switch.
The blk/wht is the one that would earth through the hood up/down switch and needs to be earthed for the switch to trip the relay supplying the +12v feed.
On the hard top harness the blk and blk/wht wires are spliced together completing the soft top switch circuit. The resulting single wire is the earth to the window.

See this is what I thought, I have the two lives joined with one wire.

Then the other two wires from the three pin connector are joined into one and into the harness on the car.

Yep soft top window worked as that only had two connectors not three.

Sounds like it's been botched to buggery, splicing the 2 wires together to get around the missing switch. In which case as long as you connect the middle wire and one or the other of the outer wires on the roof side to the 2 wires car side it should work? Don't think the polarity matter with a rear screen?

Right here's how i had it wired i know it looks messy but it was only temp to see if it worked!

I have now removed the loom from the window and now only have two wires straight from the window to the two original connectors and it still doesn't work.
Any ideas?

does the light come on at the switch?

Yes red/blk is your live, but you need to have 2 other wires both black? These both need to be earthed. One provides the earth for the window and the other the switch (as your light comes on I suspect this is fine). If you are getting no power from the red/blk wire you may need to be looking atnthe relay. You need to get a dvm out and check continuities. Check defog fuse (the switch is a different fuse).
