So if the left lane is not to be used, why is it even open? The signs show the lane closes further down the road, why is nobody allowed to use it and merge where it closes?

These 'have a go hero' lane defender types really boil my piss. What business is it of theirs to police an open and operational lane?

Fucking hate people who dart down the inside like that. It's obvious the lane is closing so the earlier people merge then the smoother the traffic will filter through. It's wankers like the Merc driver that cause the queue in the first place. You wouldn't queue jump in person, so why do it in a car?

Are they breaking the law? No. Are they being massively discourteous and selfish? Definitely.

However I don't agree with how the other driver initially pulled out on them, that was dangerous.

The other thing that annoys me is the people who then let said wankers into the queue. If one of them tried to merge in when I'm there there's no chance they're coming in. They can wait patiently like everyone else has.

A badly signed road works, it should have been 'merge in turn'.

Speaking as a biker who overtakes lines of stationary cars often, the speed differential of those zooming up the inside is the real worry in that footage for me, way too fast.

I agree with Robin, if they knew for a fact nobody would let them in at the other end, wankers like the Mercedes driver wouldn't attempt the undertake.

Don't want to get into an argument, but I really really don't understand this mentality. It says the lane closes in xx hundred yards, not suddenly, so why should both lanes not be used until that point? Everyone getting into a single lane a mile before the actual road works actually causes more traffic to back up. It's not like the lane suddenly ends, it merges into the other lane. If we all took a chill pill and zipped at the last minute, traffic would move a lot faster. Trouble is, people have this "I'm not letting him in" attitude!!

I'm one of the people who would use that left lane. Not because I "want to get one over on everyone else" like the bigot in the Scenic in the video thinks, but because I think that's the right way to use the road.

If anything the driver of that scenic should be prosecuted for dangerous driving as he deliberately using his vehicle to obstruct or collide with the other vehicle.

When you drive in Europe then return to the UK you realise we are a nation of uptight, self-righteous, arrogant wankers when it comes to driving. The attitude of this paper feeds on and to that.

I'm with J90rdn here. Roadworks like that are designed so that you merge when the lane closes, not have a 2 mile tailback in one lane whilst the other is empty. The clue is one all of the roadwork signs, they clearly tell you when the lane closes. If everyone used the intended set up correctly (use both lanes till the point of the lane closing and merge in a 'zip' fashion) then everyone would move on quicker. Don't get angry if people use them properly.

The problem is if people would stay in line at say 40mph traffic keeps flowing, as soon as someone darts up and tries to squeeze in at the very end then someone is going to have to stop and let them in. The stopping causes a chain reaction, this repetition causes ques......which no one likes! I understand it's an open lane so you have every right to use it but it does piss me off when people do it in slow traffic as it results in constant stop starts for everyone.

The thing with a situation like this is that once you've made the decision to go into the RH lane you're kinda stuck there. You see the cars whizzing past in the LH lane and think "Look at those bastards, why didn't I choose that lane. Loooooooook how far ahead they are.". And you really want to pull out into the LH lane and cruise down the 800 yards to where it closes, but you know if you do you're going to look like an even worse bastard than the people who are already in that lane.

You creep along passing the 600 yard sign, thinking "Hmmm, maybe I could still nip into the other lane for a bit", but you don't because you're worried that if you do, no one will let you in - then the people in the car behind will catch you up and shake their head condescendingly as they pass you.

At the 400 yard sign you have been undertaken by about 50 cars and you can actually see all the dickheads in front of you who are actually letting these fuckers filter in to the lane that you are now actually having to stop in occasionally - purely because these arseholes are letting these queue jumpers in.

At the 200 yard sign you resign yourself to the fact that you're so close that there's no point changing lane. But now you can look forward to the point 200 yards ahead when you will be able to not let any of these left hand lane pricks in. No way. Will you stare ahead and pretend they don't exist or will you make a point of eyeballing them while shaking your head? Either way, they won't be getting in in front of you.

You reach the merge in point. You see the pathetic loser with their indicator on, the flashes pleading with you to let them in. In time with the orange flashing you think "Fuck-You. Fuck-You. Fuck-You." They ain't getting in. Then something to your left catches your eye. You glance across, ready to begin the head shaking. It's a hottie driving the car. And she smiles at you. There's only one thing you can do. You raise your hand and gesture with your hand "on you go" as you ease off and let a space open up in front of you. You let her in...

Then she puts her phone back to her ear and tells her bestie "some dick pushover just let me in lol" and you suddenly realise what just happened......you were used.....the rest of the day you feel dirty, assuming everyone judges you for the dirty pushover you are. Every blonde reminds you of the incident, you need to get home, have a shower, wash the dirt off! Scrub really hard.....probably cry because that's what little pushovers do.....you look at yourself in the mirror, you don't even recognise yourself anymore.....who are you?

Or you could have just pulled a finger at the stupid blonde you'll never see again and be proud for the rest of the day thinking "I showed her and I got 1 car ahead....BOOM" Man points in the fucking bag!

There's nothing saying I have to keep doors open for people behind but I do because it's common courtesy and the right thing to do! Just because something says you can doesn't mean you have to! The people who do it just hold everyone else back.....and that's just rude!

Watching the video I agreed with the Renault driver.

but when you think about it, legally the Mercedes driver was actually in the right and the Renault driver broke the law.

when I think about it further, I actually do that same manoeuvre every single day on my way home from work - I do it because the signs say I'm allowed to do it, and feel absolutely no shame in merging in turn at the correct point in the road, even when the 'queue' in the other lane stretches a good half mile (Is it my problem those other mongs choose to queue for so long???)

It would work if people filtered in and kept moving, but what usually happens is traffic has to stop to let them in so everyone suffers.
It would never work properly anyway, traffic never manages to pass roadworks at a decent pace as everyone is looking at the workers and moaning about how little work they are doing.

There will always be a queue when you've got two lanes of fast moving traffic squeezed into one and forced to do less then half the speed they had been doing.

Haha, when they started shouting out the window I did think the merc driver was going to get out!
if I was the Renault driver and this happened id drive at 1mph faster than they were walking/running at me and then reverse when they turned around to get back to their car... that would have wound him up even more... and some loud benny hill music if I had it to hand :)
