Seems that the 80's generation have got to the age of looking back with rose tinted specs.

It's the same with RC cars, before Tamiya re-released the sand scorcher they were going for ?1k+.
The old arcade Pacman and donkey kong machines also go for mental money.

Tends to happen for most generations, they get to 40 think the world is a worse place and start reminiscing on the "good old days" and buying stuff either they used to have as a kid or couldn't afford as a kid.

Previous generation it was Healey 3000, E-types, Norton commando's, Triumph Bonny etc.
My generation it's RD350LC's, Escorts, etc

With cars, 25 years ago a 1.3 2 door MKII Escort was only worth scrap, now they're going for mental money.
Look at the 70's and 80's JDM shite like the Cherry, celica etc, these were shite cars when they were new, the ONLY reason you bought a Jap car in the 70's was because you couldn't afford anything better, they were like Daewoo back then.

Yet kids today are going crazy over em

I wonder if our kids are going to hunting for MKI Nissan Micra's in say 20 years

Cheers

Yeah but Gix, surely taking a piece of shit car and turning it into something unique and/or better, is what the modified car scene is all about?

Now then, where's that old ZX Spectrum?....

Piece of shite car with no suspension and ?2k dished wheels = Piece of shite car with expensive wheels that no longer goes round corners.

If ya gonna modify something it should be for it to function better, not worse.

i'm all for buying a piece of shite car and turning it into a Scooby baiter, but the fad these days is to just bolt wide wheels onto any piece of shite and have the twats knocking one off over the pics

Dude, surely each their own kind of thing?

For some the function of a car is to "look cool" and give a certain presence in their circles, by putting on the wide wheels and slamming them, they are enhancing that function.

May not be YOUR function which is fair enough because you have done well to modify your car to YOUR function, but it doesn't mean your function is EVERYONE'S function.

function

Definitions

1. General: Type of action performed by a device, department, or person. Function remains more or less fixed whereas the 'purpose' (which indicates intention or objective) generally changes. For example, the function of a hammer is to strike something nearby whereas its purpose (what to strike and why) could be anything the hammer-wielder has in mind.

That's a bit of a potato potato type of response to me mate.

To argue the point with the above in mind though.

The function of a car is to get from A to B. Not to do 190 mph trying to get there or to shake the street and annoy the neighbors.

Your purpose might be to make it faster (which is a commendable goal and I salute you for your efforts), but that doesn't mean that is everyone's purpose. For those that like it, the no suspension super wide wheel is cool. Will be useless when driven hard but will get you from A to B.

You can argue semantics all you like but the argument I believe is still valid.

I'm talking about function.
You were saying that function can mean anything, that's simply NOT the case.

Cars used on public roads are NOT fashion accessories.
First and foremost they have a legal and moral obligation to be safe for public roads.

But that being said if someone takes say a B310 Nissan Sunny, bolts on carlos fandango wide wheels and slams it to the ground, but does nothing else, that car will then still be a piece of shite car, but with wide wheels and lowered.

Thing is we have different generations here.
With my generation we grew up without T'net, so when a mate bought a car the first thing we'd do is take it out for a spin.
Back when i was a lad a car judged entirely by how it drove.

Nowadays these kids are growing up and are basing their car buying decision entirely on "sum pics they saw on the T'net"

As cars are not stationary objects but moving things, how they look does not really tell anything about the main qualities of the car i.e. how it drives.
So you've got kids running around saying "that's dope" etc but in reality the car drives like a piece of shite.

Hence it being a piece of shite.

Cheers

Again I am not disagreeing with most of what you are saying, mainly that a car with wide wheels and no suspension will not handle well, but that does not mean that it will be un-driveable.

Yes you can't drive it hard around a track but will still get you from A to B (the function of a car).

How it drives (as in how good the performance is) doesn't have anything to do with the "function" of the car. As long as it gets you from A to B safely it fulfills it's function.

If it wasn't legal or safe it wouldn't have an MOT and would therefore not have tax and would subsequently be swiftly off the road (if the legal system works properly).

I must say though I would appreciate if you wouldn't generalize all of us as idiots who buy stuff because they are pretty.

Also you can't possibly state that cars are not fashion accessories. More and more these days cars are being catered for the more "fashionable". It may not be a primary function of the car but it is at the very least a secondary function and taken into consideration when the car is being designed.

There is also the old proverb, 1 man's trash is another man's treasure. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean no one can like it.

You yourself keep confusing purpose and function in your arguments above.

YOUR purpose for a car is to drive it hard. The function of the car is simply to provide transport from A to B. Your way is not the only way.

Blah blah blaaahhhhhh
To be honest i've not got a fooooooooooookin clue what your waffling on about.

End of the day if people want to follow some pointless shallow insignificant thing, that's only supported by insecure shallow twats who's only possible attainable goal in life is to fit in with what everyone else is doing (i.e. Fashion), they should buy a jumper and spend the money they've saved to buy some suspension

A piece of shite is a piece of shite, no mount of waffling, talking bollox alloy wheels or lowered suspension will change that fact.

Lets use the B310 Nissan Sunny i used as an example earlier.
That cars is one of the biggest pieces of shite ever to leave any car production line.

You could buy one, respray it, fit super wide dished wheels, have it low enough to scrape slug shite off the ground and it'll still be a piece of shite car.
It might well make a great photo, but it's still a piece of shite car.

I've nothing against piece of shite cars, i've owned and driven many over the years and they have served their purpose.
Difference is i knew the car was a piece of shite, i didn't try to convince anyone it was anything else by bolting other shit onto the car.

Now what your saying is "piece of shite" is subjective right?
Bollox your talking out your arse.

Line up 50 people, have em test drive a B310 Nissan Sunny then say a 99 Ford Mondeo and ask em all their opinions.
I've no doubt in my mind they'd all agree the B310 Nissan Sunny is a piece of shite.

Anyone that says anything otherwise doesn't deserve an opinion as they're twats that know fooook all

TBH mate if you can't understand that either you are too stupid, or you are too close minded and opinionated to bother trying to understand what anyone else is trying to say.

In either case tis a pure waste of time (both yours and mine) in continuing with this discussion.

I maintain to each their own, your way isn't the only way, and you would do well to show people the same kind of respect they show you. You are surely "old school" enough to appreciate that.

ETA: If you are going to quote me, have the courtesy to do it properly.
