Dsi Or A Psp?

My son's going to be 5 in a couple of weeks and I'm thinking of getting him a handheld console.Just can't decide between a DSi or a psp. Anyone any advice on which would have the best games for a 5 year old and which would have the easiest controls?

DSi. I love the PSP and its excellent for on the go media but i must admit that the DSi is a better games console.
IMO etc...

DS all the way.

Nintendo consistently churn out games you can play over and over for years, the touchscreen is easy for kids and there's a load of really good casual stuff for grown ups to play too. I've not tried a DSi but our DS has survived a lot of dribble, dropping and general toddler based abuse over the last 2 1/2 years so they're pretty damn robust as well.

I just wouldn't buy a PSP, If I wanted that sort of console I'd buy a PS3 and live without portability.

What about an iPod Touch? Costs about £150 and has many thousands of games/apps that can be downloaded for free or for 59p-£2ish. My kids (6&9) want and use my iPhone(same software as ipod Touch) much more than their DS's where games are upto £30 each. I could load up an ipod touch for a tenner and it would be far better fun than a DS with £100 of games.
Flood, you make a good point, but if your just a little bit techy, you can get the DS and a little SD card homebrew effort, and have all games for no monies.

/this is illegal though..but quite easy at around the cost of just 1 game and the occasional SD card.
Hi there, I would say a ds for a five year old... plus as abouve sd card it... (but illegal)
Another vote for the DS....my lad has the DS lite but I'm looking at replacing it with the DSi XL.
another vote for the DS have had a ds (old silver one) Ds lite and DSI.. all are still working (my mum now uses the silver one for "brain training", my daughter uses the DS Lite, and the DSI is mine.. there are loads of games available for 5 year olds on the DS.. the PSP is more fragile and IMHO more for older children..

the Ds's in this house have all taken some rough treatment.. although looked after, they do take a fair bit of "abuse"..

one word of advice.. the DSI can access the internet.. and I discovered it has no safety.. so a child could search and get "inapropriate" material.. the only fault I could find with it.. so think before you give it Wifi Access..

:)

'nuther vote for DSi.

I had a PSP, it was friggin awful! Gave me horrible pins and needles in my hands, they got the ergonomics all wrong with that thing. Flogged on eBay!

Nintendo on the other hand knows everything important about ergonomics, battery life, screen quality and software developer support, and that's why they cornered the market in the 1980s and have been king ever since.

Hail the king!

definitely a DS if your son is 5
I think download games onto SD card is not illegal as long as you are not the one who released it on internet. not sure though but my friend used to download tonnes of games without any issue

a PSP has better graphics and more mature games, if you son is 15 then I would suggest a PSP... if he is into games

DS has a lot more of silly games and a lot more simplier interface that people at any age would be able to handle. Not sure how smart a 5 year old kid now is but I am sure he will play better than you in a DS game than you

you can download them easy enough but its still illegal for a manner of reasons!

DS all day every day for me, ive been through 3 PSP's buying them then getting bored. through all that ive had 1 DS and still have it now, its just that much better. Especially id say for the younger ones too
got to say DSi here.. I have a PSP myself, but don't see that as a viable option for a kiddy - with the games Nintendo make, it's pretty much a given
My twin 3yo boys have a DSi each (with a dodgy acekard!!) Absolutely love them and work them a treat!!!
definately the dsi.
loads more kiddy friendly games and less risk of scratches to discs.
We have both, the DS gets the vote. All I ended up using the PSP for was watching films when I was out and about (and it was a faff getting them on a memory stick in the first place but thats another story), but now I have an ipod touch I don't even use it for that, so it just sits in a drawer.
