It's a beautiful day and I'm not smiling because I still haven't found a 5 (Roadster to be specific). Been beaten to 2 really good prospects because work wouldn't give me any short-notice time off (too many others already on holiday) to go and view and I'm not brave enough to bid on ebay when the seller says "I'll put more pics up during the week" then doesn't before the auction ends early. Then there are all these comments like "How Fcukin Much!!!" for Mk1's priced at ?3-?4k but hell, if that's expensive then where exactly are all these late-model, recently imported Mk1's, I will go and look at them today. I've got nothing else on and cash burning a hole in my bank account.

All I'm after is a clean rot-free 1.8 with an LSD and working a/c. She indoors says it can't be red or white either. Is that such a big wish-list? I'm located in Notts.

Don't buy off ebay without looking first. You'll just end up with a rust bucket.

AC probably wont work. Will need gassing although i've heard that the gas needed isn't legal anymore (but that might be older models). Why do you need ac so bad? Drop the roof or open a window!

4 is obviously massively expensive for a standard mk1 so keep looking. 3k is still a bit ridiculous but if its mint then i'd consider it. Although you can get a mk2 for that.

If i were you i'd be keener to buy from the for sale section here. Chances are the cars looked after and you can use the forum to search its history

Fair few on PH... don't tick all your boxes but maybe you need to be a little flexible.

They're out there... don't let location put you off either. I'd agree with Frank too... Ebay not a great place to buy... If you can find one on here then you should get a very good, honest car.

Chin up... you'll have one soon!

1. Yes, you are probably right there - I know there are nice cars on ebay but equally there are many that are rotters.
2. I accept expecting 14 year old A/C to work spot-on is probably a bit much but I'd still like to have the option. It will be a daily commuter. Thing is I've had a 5 before so I know that on days when it's raining and warm the cabin gets a bit er, stuffy and I'd hope A/C would help although I accept I've never experienced it in a 5 so not sure how effective it is. Plus, if I get a late Mk1 they're on R134 gas instead of the old (not earth friendly) R12 so it's not a problem.
3. Don't worry, ?4k is over budget - it's meant to be a summer plaything and that much cash takes it into "proper" car territory and I've already got one of them.

I would give Steven at 5 speed a ring to see if he knows anyone selling.

Yes indeed. Have to say for a 17 year old car with plenty of miles it goes very well indeed and certainly feels like there are more than 114 horses up front. No slack in the driveline or steering either and the interior has cleaned up well. Even the leccy windows go up and down at a good speed! In fact the only downside is the hood is a bit past it and the rear arches are rather frilly but I can live with that. The missus however is not convinced so there is a battle of wills going on at present, it's all good fun. Just wish it hadn't decided to go back to winter today. Bloody English weather.

Air con in the MX5 is about as useful as a fart in the wind so don't let that put you off a good car.

She indoors shouldn't dictate which car or colour you get either, most women want cute and pretty without a care in the world for performance, re-sale value or reliability.

If I'd have listened to my GF then I'd have bought a piece of crap mid nineties Audi A3 with the spec list comparable to that of a donkey pulling a cart and the performance of one to match. I'd have got this piece of crap for the same price as my loaded and newer BMW. The reasoning behind her decision, because BMW's used to have the reputation that is more commonly attributed to modern Audi drivers.....she actually prefered the BMW... my sisters too, both prefered the BMW but would have chosen the Audi for the name sake...make sense???

So you're the lucky bugger who picked up the cheap smurf. Absolute bargain.

If you had a budget of 2-3k then you've got quite a bit left over to sort those little issues.
