Why would you want to ditch the spare wheel?

As for air compressors, Argos? tenner?

Carry a can of tyreweld or the like instead?

lpg

all the small compressors i've ever tried are crap and die rapidly, including near on the full range of michelin branded ones, a halfords brand one, an argos one.....

i'd go tyre weld. 2 cans if you're worried

They obviously don't make them like they used to! I've got loads knocking about from over the years that all work and were dirt cheap in the first place.

I carry one of these when I need to remove the spare wheel for added space, it includes the 12v inflator as well as the tyre weld. I've used the inflator as a back up on it's own a few times and it's been fine.

FWIW I've had two Halfords digital tyre inflators and both have failed at the connection between hose and tyre adaptor after about 2-4 years.
