Cheapest (and I mean *cheap*) power mods for a mazda miata

424 Views 17 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Dickie
Hi! I have a 1.6 90hp miata (1996). I have already spent most of my money on suspension and maintenance (coilovers, torsen diff, gaskets etc) and I need to get my car ready for a drift event. I have like 270 dollars left for power mods. What are the best bang for your buck mods? (although I can get the wheels spinning with 90hp, I think more would be even better) Can't really get above that price range...

at this point, air filter ? btw I sold the ECU :)
X2 space saver tyres on rear, seen it done drifted amazing.

Have you done the timing advance mod? Seems like a good mod on mk1's (free you just turn the CAS with a timing light running)
If they're within budget a 1.8l engine will likely be the cheapest per hp upgrade possible as hawks suggested. Here in the UK it equates to about 10hp per £100. Other than that you're looking at decent headers which really are only 2hp per £100 at best, and run the risk of actually loosing hp on cheaper genetic sets. If you have the metal and ability to make the brackets you could do a very basic m45 supercharger setup at about 4psi with retarded timing and some cheap injectors, it's not how I'd recommend doing it but it's theoretically possible (iv had 2 good condition m45s about the £40 mark)

cambelt & tensioner / idler rollers, waterpump, plugleads & sparkplugs, oil & oilfilter and airfilter.

that'll probably eat your $270 BUT anything left I'd look at getting the flywheel lightened - a worthwhile 'mod' (y)

a good 1.6L driven hard is a capable car;)

Nah just throw one in. £20 belt if you're super worried. Don't need to drain oil and can reuse coolant 😜
spend a few euros on some aluminium brackets and M6 nuts/bolts and boost your cooling with some mods to the undertray

Nielex claims a 5c lower temperature under bonnet and also perhaps in the engine...

$90 for what is effectively a bit of angle bar?? Are people really buying that rubbish, if so I can offer a similar product for £50 😆 😆 😆

Have you tried one of these? Or anyone by chance?

I'd love to see some more pictures, can't justify the price but I am interested to 3d print a test piece to see intake temps before vs after. If the results are good build it'll be a trip to the local hardware store for sheet metal.
duct-tape & thin plastic or rubber sheeting (~1mm thick) to seal the underbonnet area between rad / subframe / chassis and maybe thin aluminium angle to brace the rad / bumper ducting should help matters (& cost a fair bit less ;) )

although @atlex does like to buy overpriced things on the offchance they've a japaneeze sounding name (or someone from Japan had walked past them in a previous life :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: )

On the topic of strange cheap DIY mods with claimed benefits has anyone tried reinforcement brackets for their ARB mounts?

Bit suss to me. I get the OE ones do flex a lot with uprated ARBs, but I cant see that wedging in of material is guna help much. I'd worry about them rubbing as well. Proper reinforced metal ARB mounts mounted to the chassis properly with a welder or larger bolts on the other hand would likely be worth it. Trouble is you reinforce one area to with stand more stress and generally you just move that stress elsewhere, so some consideration is needed as to where that might be and if it can take it.
Surprised nobody has suggested here swapping the cams for ones out of an early 115hp 1.6. Won't get you all the extra power but there's got to be about 15hp on the table. Definitely better bang for buck than things like air filters.

just not sure the ECU can use it. maybe it can ? :)
Take as much stuff out off and off the car to save weight and go on a diet !!
It all improves the power to weight ratio.
Cheapest way improve it.
