Hi all,

You'll be pleased to hear that after much deliberation, I've decided to spend my hard-earned on an MX-5 and I'm posting here because I'd much prefer to buy from an enthusiast or specialist dealer. I'm considering either a MK1/NA (1994-1998) or a MK2/NB (1998?2005) with a 1.8i (BP-4W) engine and a Torsen LSD, either UK or JDM import. Ultimately however, my final decision will come down to condition (primarily of the chassis/bodywork) and value for money. I've not yet set a firm budget simply because of the variety of stuff out there.

Furthermore, the vehicle will be for weekend fun only with the strong intention of preparing it for amateur competition. As such, my initial wish list includes forced induction, 4-point roll bar, hardtop, reducing weight, bucket seats and harnesses, performance exhaust, adjustable coilovers, lightweight alloys and low-profile tyres, etc. So obviously any Five already kitted out with any/all of these will be seriously considered.

This will be my first Five so any buying advice you may have will be greatly appreciated. Primary advice so far [1] seems to be to go for a test drive in both MK's, several test drives actually, and see which I like best. Sound advice, thanks guys. Therefore, I wanted to ask if anyone is willing to offer me a test drive or a ride shotgun in their Five(s) so that I may get a feel for each MK? Like my dear old Granny once said, "those who don't ask, don't get". :) I'm based in central Manchester but I can travel and I'm more than willing to pay for any expenses. Also, can anyone recommend any specialist dealers that might be able to offer me value for money on a good example of used Five?

As you can see, I'm keeping my options very much open at this point in the hope of finding a good one, so any suggestions or offers you may have are very welcome.

Thank you for your time,
Leslie

Why don't you come over to this in Runcorn in a couple of weeks time:-

http://www.mx5nutz.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=96780

There will hopefully be a large selection of mx5's of all marks there and certainly at least one turbo'ed car (mine) a rotrex driven car and I'd be surprised if there wasn't at least one person there with a supercharger. So you're bound to be able to get a few pax rides and some good advice too.

Thanks JB, if I'm ever in Hull I might just take you up on that. Btw, have you any plans to attend any more shows/events this year?

If I'm free that weekend then I'd love to attend. Thank you. Btw, I've just been browsing your build thread and I really liked your headlight interiors spray tutorial. It's such a cheap, simple mod that really transforms the look of the front end.

Anyway, thanks again for the invite and hopefully see you there.

The Wales meet people have a pretty varied selection of cars, you can't really go wrong with them, there's a monthly meet at the Trafford centre too that's decent enough, obviously it's a bit chavvier being in Manchester

Well hopefully see you at the meet then.

I was actually amazed at the difference spraying the interior of the lights made to the look of the front of the car. It's subtle but makes a massive dfference, also apart from I think a mazdaspeed turbo'ed 5, no 5 came with this look stock. However I think it looks effective more on certain colours of 5, though I've not yet seen a 5 were it looked completely wrong.

Thanks for the info, in fact I've just been browsing the "Events and Motorsport" subforums.

Indeed, could almost be a DB9 Volante sitting there in your footer/banner. :)

There seems to be quite a few specialist Five dealers about [1] so just wondering if anyone has any experience of and/or opinions on buying from one?

Thanks in advance,
Leslie

tbh I looked at all of those names on the first page and I would not deal with any of them based on experience (one on there I've had dealings with, they don't sell cars, but I wouldn't let my car near them again
) and stuff I've heard. A 5 specialist garage in most instances will be no better or worse than any normal garage other than a couple of exceptions and those exceptions don't sell 5's they just do mechanical work. In fact you'll find most of the 5 specialist garages that sell cars are over-priced. Likewise the ads on the OC for cars for sale are generally over-priced too. This is mainly because we are all enthusiasts and tend to think our cars are worth more than they actually because......well.........we like them.

I bought my 5 from Dandy cars about 9 years ago, i think they've changed hands now.

They were and still are mega expensive, my intention was to test drive as many of their cars as possible just to get the experience.
In the end though although the car was around ?1000 more than they were selling privately at that time, it was in exceptional condition, the bloke and his son really couldn't do enough to help us.
We were there around 6 hours but were driving their cars for around 4 of those hours

I looked at several other 5's and they ranged from shite to ok.
As we intended on driving the car back to Greece ok wasn't good enough for me so i paid over the odds for a car that even 9 years on is in exceptional condition.

End of the day though you don't HAVE to buy from the place you test drive the cars from, so it's worth popping into a few of these places simply because the more experience you have the better your experience will be in picking a decent one.

Depending on your budget, don't rule out a Mk3. They're every bit as fun as the Mk1 & Mk2, and a lot more comfortable.

I've got one of each mk if you're ever down in Birmingham.

Good call

Only thing that outs me off early NC's is that their motors seem a bit fragile when FI'd and i'd have to FI it as i quickly got bored with the standard power on the roads.

On the track though the NC has wayyyyyyyyy more grip than even a sorted NA or NB.

Thanks for the advice fellas.

There are certainly plenty of Fives for sale privately all over the country, so based on your comments my plan is to read up on buying advice and attempt to find something cheaper elsewhere; leaving me with more money to customise and have fun with. :)

Also, I'll likely be able to pick up some first-hand buying advice/inspection techniques at the Runcorn dyno day, amongst other places. As I've mentioned before, my main concern will be the condition of the shell/chassis so once I become comfortable inspecting that I'll be very happy to take your advice and buy privately.

In the meantime however, if any of you happen across something decent on offer then please do let me know.

Thanks again.
