I'm surprised there's not already a thread discussing it!

Anyone getting one?

I've heard the UK one will have 3g so i'm guessing they'll be out on a mobile phone style contract??

Now the missus loves her iphone i've managed to persuade her that we're going to need an iPad in our new house!

If they sold the basic one without 3G and it had a remote app for my Mac/Spotify, I would be tempted. Other wise I won't bother.

Well my plan is to use it for some sort of home automation/wifi remote if possible, so I could do without 3g, my last controller was near the expected RRP of the iPad.... plus it'll look stupidly sexy sat on my coffee table..

Im not too sure about them to be honest. Although what ever apple do I always love when I've had a good play? I just cant comprehend what excatly it is. Is it a laptop or is it an oversized Ipod touch? Again I would need to play and find out excatly whats on it etc but initially I think its far to big for a media device. For a laptop I would like to see it having full function and not limited to apps. Eg be able to word process etc. We know it can store/play music and surf the net but what else can it do what an iphone/itouch do?

how much are they going to cost?

Much as buying apple would soil my eternal soul I'm mildly interested in these as I'm desperate to get hold of something where I can draw directly onto the screen and doesn't cost as much as a Cintiq and has a bigger screen than my phone.

only for a couple of minutes scribbling with photoshop on the 12" one rather than the big bugger - it worked pretty much as you'd expect really. Just like an intuos but there's a screen under your pen.

I want one badly but they're very expensive and it's hard to justify the expense - particularly as I'm not sure it'd work as well as an intuos in zbrush.

Same as the US there will be both the bog standard wifi version for about ?350, and a 3G one which may well be subsidised by your mobile provider.

Generally all first gen devices from Apple have poor wifi, BUT they do then generally chuck out a firmware update that throws the transmitter power up a bit.

In terms of what it is, well the press for the past month or so, have been saying 'oh it's only a big iPhone, iPod touch etc etc' But now it's out, if you read the reviews, they are all falling in love.

Basically I think you have to consider it as thus.

Think of it as a netbook, with all the unecessary crap pulled out, and just like the iPhone, a User Interface that is a joy to use. Basically it's when you want to sit in bed or on the sofa, and not have to have a bulky laptop. It is more that possible to type mini essays out on it, with iWork, but then you can read books, watch movies streamed from your computer or on it, etc etc

I DON'T think it's going to take off as well here as it has in the US, but then we have a different culture, but we'll see!

350 is doable - i could earn that back pretty damn quickly.

anyone seen proof that a stylus can be used on an Apple touchscreen - I know HTC have made one for the touch HD2 which is also capacitative and theory suggests anything conductive will work so it's not beyound the realms of possiblity. ( random metal objects from around the office don't seem to be working
)

i'd agree with that if they were expensive, if it comes out at ?350 as suggested it's not expensive in the slightest for a good sized, high quality touchscreen.

Complete waste of time and money. However at least the chaps down at BlendTec have found a good use for it:

It blends!
Only once you twat it in half though!

I call official shennanigans on that by their own rules!

I wouldn't say complete waste of time and money though (but then this is why i don't think it'll do as well here as it will in the states, people think it's pointless because it seems to be a crippled netbook)...it does fill something of a niche.

Say for instance a person has an iMac, they want to browse from the sofa, but don't want to drop a minimum of about £800 on a Macbook. At that point £350 seems pretty good. Especially when you've effectively got something that does everything, and requires no maintenance whatsoever. Fair enough it doesn't do flash, but in the next 18months Flash will largely be dead, pretty much all major online video publishers are now moving to html5 to do the job, as flash is far too inefficient to deal with hi-def content.

Oh and i'm pretty sure there are a variety of capacitive stylus' available already poopipe! If it works for iPhone it'll work for iPad. Also mmmmm yummy IPS display as well!

The major drawback for my money is the fact it runs the same sort of interface as the iPhone. if it had a touchscreen version of MacOS I'd say it'd be a decent little device, but as it stands I don't really see the point in it. If i want to browse from my sofa I can use my iPhone, and if I wanted to do anything more in-depth than that I'd just use my PC or if i was really determined to sit on my sofa I'd get myself a netbook because it's cheaper and has greater functionality (not to mention a proper keyboard).

Each to their own and that, but I just think the usefulness of this device is seriously limited since it doesn't really excel in any particular area.

I can see them being useful in things like Universities, but for the home user I think they're just no use.

a bit of research suggest homebrew styli can be made from old biros and tinfoil - my main concern is that they have to be quite wide to function but on a 10" screen that might not be a big issue.

From this I want the ablity to slap sketches down fast on the sofa without having to juggle a wacom and a laptop - I'm not fussed about touch sensitivity at that stage in the process which is what a lot of people have been bitching about.

I'm going to try a hacked 02 joggler first cos that's only 50 quid and will serve as a proof of concept.

It seems a bit dim not supporting flash on any multimedia device IMO - the expected lifetime of the device probably doesn't stretch past a year and given the production userbase and the number of careers based around flash it isn't going away any time soon.

edit: mazdachris

If you treat it as a "lifestyle" device you can hang off the kitchen wall, do your calenders, look at recipes and browse a bit of porn on the bog it makes a lot more sense
