I could use some diagnostic assistance. I've had my MX5 NA a couple of months now, after a week or so in I noticed a squeal started. It wasn't just on cold start, it would typical be slow driving round town. On a motorway, 70, 5th, no squeal. Never seemed to have any other symptoms.
So, I recently changed the water pump, cam belt, and thermostat on my MK2 V-Spec 1.8 import. The car started and idled fine every time before carrying out any work. It's only covered 87,000 miles and has been relatively well looked after.
I thought that I was 180 degrees out on the timing, so...
I have a mk2.5 mx5 2002 model, a couple of weeks ago my alternator belt snapped (it was a fairly new belt) and so I got it replaced. The car was squeeling before then and I hoped that having a new belt on would cure that, however it didn't and it's been doing it ever since.
My initial thoughts...
Hi there, I have recently just done some work on my brakes, new pads on rear and just general cleaning up of the rear brakes.
Now when I went to start the car after this there was a slight squeal coming from engine bay but I cannot pin point where it is but the weird thing is, the squeal got...
Hi Guys - hope you can help (again!),
Ive mentioned before I had a squealing noise - which was first traced to the gearbox but was actually the two belts.
I bought new ones and tightened them correctly, but they keep coming loose. So once every 2 months I need to tighten them up again.
This is going to be quite vague.. I do apologise.
Just noticed it getting worse on my way home from work but didn't get a chance to video it and post it to see what you guys think.
The car is a UK model, 1995 NA 1.6. With 69000 miles.
Basically getting a squeak from one of the...
... Went to my local garage I get a lot of work done and turns out I couldn't crank up the timing due to someone putting on the crank pulley wrong. Haha
This made me laugh.. what a tool!
Well it's either that or the CAM sensor is gone.. But I can't see how the car would still run normally with...
right i have just loosened the bolt at the top and the bottom of the alternator , so that i could slide it along to loosen it and take the belt off , i spun the pulley and to me it looks ok , although im not sure if its just me wanting it to be ok , so id like a second opinion
Yet another question.
Currently looking to change my MP62 nose pulley as per my other thread.
Is there any recommended suppliers that you chaps use for belts? and any brands to aim for or avoid?
Hi Has anyone had problems with the "cogged" alternator belt from MX-5 Parts on a 1.6?
Belt I removed was a standard OEM V
Put one on today and it was really tight to get around the pullys, very little adjustment was avilable and alternator tilted over to the left as much as possible but I...
EDIT: Revisited in Feb 2017 - some more tips, corrections, clarifications, and simplifications!
Who are you?
I'm not a professional mechanic. I'm what many would call a bedroom mechanic. I work in IT and am interested in cars. I'm a long time lurker and recently bought my first MX5 (2001 Mk2.5...
I was tinkering with the car last night and came across this bolt..
In the photo, the left hand side is the back of the engine closer to the windscreen and the right hand side is the front towards the radiators. Car is an import Mk1.
Is this supposed to be this loose? I googled it...
