Cheers!

You most likely need a 6speed turret ....

Is that because of the 2 knobs that are in the 6 speed as oppose to the 1 knob in the 5 speed?

I don't quite remember why, but when I was doing my conversion, I remember people insisting to find a 6speed along with its turret. Also another backing up fact is that the rebuild kit for a 6speed turret is not the same as for the 5speed...they differ on the nylon ring diameter that mounts on the ball of the turret for sure...

All 6 speeds and later 5 speeds have 2 prongs in the turret, early 5 speeds had 1. There are 2 versions of the 6 speed that have different ball/cup diameters, from 2003 onwards they are larger, they are not interchangeable. Later 6 speeds have a slightly longer throw than the earlier 6 speeds as well due to the pivot point to cup being further apart, and both 6 speeds have a different pivot point to cup length than the 5 speeds. However I do not know whether the early 6 speed shifters and later 5 speeds are interchangeable, I imagine the answer is no as the pivot point to cup distances are different, but a quick test off the car of a 5 speed short shifter worked fine in my early 6 speed but I havent had a chance to install the 6 speed and actually try it on the car (and it's an aftermarket not OE shifter so not directly comparable I guess).

5 speed gearstick in a 6 speed = ghetto quickshift

although theres only a small difference in the ratio's between so not a great ammount shorter throw.

Lol, you're statement has more relevance to me than you intended. Mk1 short shifters can be had for £20 on ebay, mk2 ones are like £160. I was fed up of punching my radio on track so set about looking at the differences and found that it's literally just the turret spacer, so bought a mk1 kit and cut an extra slit to fit into the mk2 gearbox (knocking the pin out is strongly advised against by a number of reputable mx5 shops so didnt want to do that). It works perfectly fine. However, I am due to move to a 6 speed box as the 5 speed ratios are trash for track work on a stock power car IMO and have been trying to work out how best to do it and which shifter is most compatible with the kit I have put together (I have both a later and early 6 speed box, they were under £200 so rude not to). Maintaining the pivot point seems to be the most important, but the non-OE nylon/metal cups appear to be deeper and shaped differently so it might not matter as much as I originally thought.
