As per the title I'm after a bit of advice on upgrading my air compressor to something a bit larger and more powerful.

My current one is an old Black and Decker with a 24L tank and 1.5hp motor, and I'm looking at something roughly double the air capacity and power. Whilst its fine for most tasks its definitely reaching its limit in terms of output when using a rattle gun, etc. and paint wise will only run a small touch up gun.

Main questions I suppose are whether that would be sufficient for most home garage purposes and whether anyone has any specific recommendations?

I would recommend the SGS 100l compressor. Good power and flow, more than most iv seen at a similar size (adverts often quote too high compared to what the unit can realistically provide), capacity is enough for painting a panel at a time and it keeps up with my FLG5 without much issue.

Cheers - I was initially looking at something in the region of 50l, but a bigger receiver probably makes more sense.

Also seems very competitively priced.

bigger IS definately better when it comes to pnumatic power

I'd look for 150L+ purely to future-proof :blob:

I've no idea on brands & prices sorry, last new compressor I bought was a 200L thing ~20 years ago from Machine mart :thumb-up:

Rich.

If you are after doing some painting have a look at LVLP spray guns and work out what you need to run them.

The Low Volume Low Pressure guns use less air and cause less overspray / misting.

So you might be into spray guns and matched compresser.  I have a 3HP 150L compressor

I have two cheap top feed guns one for Paint and one for Laquer.

You can get by with 100 for painting parts, but if you wana do a bonnet or more of a car I'd try and go to 200. I don't think they do that size in something for a 3 pin plug but you can daisy chain 2 100l compressors together (or add a 100l tank but this might over work the motor if used extensively)

Cheers all.

Maybe the answer is a decent 100-200L compressor to run air tools comfortably and then I've still got the option of an LVLP gun if it want to paint in the future.

In the interim it should still be enough to do paint things like subframes and other small components.
