There are still lots of great threads on here that haven't been revived properly after the great crash of '18.

 

Yup, this pretty much killed off the forum as a lot of people headed to the FB pages and pretty much stayed there. 
Shame, as there was (is?) a lot of knowledge here.

Things have changed with MX5's as well, and how quickly.

 

When I was here previously up until 2017 I could still find a nice MK1 to buy, (and I did buy and sell a few) I had to look but they were out there. Now I'm finding out the hard way about profiteering. People have pound signs in their eyes.

 

It's like the whole MK1 scene is now full of filler-bodged lash ups turned around quickly for a killer profit, cars in pictures like shiny new conkers that are all rotten inside.

 

There's a car for sale at the mo that's £3500 and it's cat C! I was offered a total mess of a black V-spec for £2k which was very bad, needed that spending straight away to sort it. That was a Cat D and the owner later admitted it cost £1500 only two months ago!  She didn't tell me about the Cat D(!) I wisely checked myself.. lesson learnt.

 

It's a blinkin' nightmare out there and it isn't going to get any better this spring.

 

I missed the end of the auction for best car so far, silver '91 Eunos in Widnes, rusted out both sides at the back but original, genuine and honest. Low mileage, good history, lots of extra pics sent when asked, everything right, and £1120! Those are the cars I'm looking for now, anything repaired and £4k is given a very wide berth unless there are pics showing everything being done.

 

Nightmare.

yup, and scene-queens that are doomed (I 'like' the ones covered in badly fitted rb arches with ebay's finest cheap coilovers  )

always Buyer Beware   (unless your name is victoria & you write a load of pots on groups bemoaning your choice of purchase )

 

Always byuer beware, if you don't know about cars then get a friend or third party to assist & help look for issues, be prepared to walk away & don't NEVER get pressurised into purchase as 'theres a few other people want to view / buy / offered more money etc.'

I always try to buy a 'blank canvass' as you don't have previous bodge or bad repairs to contend (amend??) with.  this applies to anything not just the Eunos's I own.

 

fresh shiney new paint can be hiding filler & a thousand sins, any car thats had 'all the welding done' or 'restored' rings alarm bells to me as I know the state of the trade & theres few pro outfits I'd recomend   - helps that I weld / fabricate so know what to look for also....



Wait for the shows & cruises to start up again, there'll be a rush on cheap bits (new & used) and kiddies desperate for a car (& also asking about insurance for first car / 16 year old soon to be 17 / have points etc.)


I spent years in the classic ford & rallycar 'scene' (if you can call it that?) also with vw's and while theres bodges around them it's the jdm yo types that I've noticed the worst rubbish modified cars & bodges.

I missed the hayday of Nutz. Was probably registered on here towards the tail end of it but didn't really become active. Wish I had now. It was the darstadly Cribbs that got me into my '5 and I always used to hear tales of the Nutz social network and how good it was.

I've never really found a good local community to join in with in my corner of Kent though. I joined a local FB MX5 group that was pretty good but they seem to have faded away too in the past few years, and without wanting to sound snobby as it's not that, I've always struggled to find common ground with many of the typical modern-day owners as described above, with their bits of ebay zip tied but hanging off their slammed cars, because that's what the look (and probably IG likes but I'm out of my depth there) demands. And then there was being guilty by association to some of the driving and behaviour, and I decided to step away.

Anyway, back to forums. Massive shame they've slowed down in general, FB and IG will never being able to give the knowledge and community that a good old fashioned forum gives. I'm thankful that Saabs still have a good and active forum (probably because we're largely grumpy old gits that don't understand modern social media) and retro rides still seems quite active, although arguably not what it once was, probably because so many retro cars are now completely out of the price range of the average Joe like me. Would be great to have a forum revival.

Nutz was a contributing factor to the enjoyment of owning an MX5. We held a number of meets up here in the North West and even a TIG welding day at my house with "special" cups of tea..

Andrew Stott @Autolink has 2/3 solid (not minted) self imported Mk1's he'll be fettling for sale soon.

Pre-Covid imports, which with the long standing Yen-£ exchange rates killed off finally by ludicrous container costs...is probably just as well.

He gets very few if any Mk1's now for parts harvesting these days..cannot even recall the last one.

But, if I was looking into a Mk1..he'd be my first call.

Not the cheapest...but....

Mk1's seem to be falling into 4 basic categories now.

 

Rotted sheds/spares £100-£400

 

Kinda dire projects but hanging on & driveable £800 plus

 

Sort of solid MOT passers fettled up & decently rot free ( oh yeah?) in need of "detail" fettling. 2k to 5k plus

 

Trailer queens, low mile barn finds sans chicken shit, Executor of Estates Werther Originals only dry driven & (cough-nudge "RS'"s) What ever you are daft enough to pay.

 

Had mine refurbed 18 months back Robin, as I could not find the ones I wanted in Scotland for around 4k so I chucked 4.5k at my own rot box I've had for nearly 15 years including binning the entire chassis, brakes, wishbones, brace bars, alloys, & started again

It really owes me 5.5k plus in the final accounting but not for sale.

At least I know every single crevice, every nut, and every bolt.

If I did sell? At best 3k I'd have thought...it's a leper Roadster aka 1840cc Auto.

Enjoyed reading through this thread. Great seeing some of the old guard posting. I still pop on a few times a week for a look to see what's happening. Going to un-sorn the NA next week and get out for the first time since October.

The lack of giving a shit by the owners meant that a lot of people moved their threads over to mighty5s.
But neither are what they used to be. Still lots of helpful people about though.
