Hi all has anyone ever changed the two side differential oil seals on a early mx5 mk1 with the Smooth Case Differential?
The seals are not just the rubber type that pop out and push in to replace , but these have a metal outer ring with the rubber seal inside.
The Part number is T020-27-238
Anyone got any advice it would be greatly appreciated.

I did replace those in my 1.8 torsen diff with pop out drive shafts. The easiest and safest way to go is to drain oil on the diff, remove the upper wish bone bolt. Pop out the shafts and move them out of the way of the diff.

At this point you have a clean and nice working area. What you need to do, is to pray them out taking advantage of the metal ring they have, and since the drive shaft is out of the way you have one less surface to worry about damaging. Ideally if you have an oil seal removal tool may be handy but even without one, if you are carefully you can remove those.

that sounds like the same type of seal but without ther rubber outer covering?

 

should be the same method of fittment????

 

the earlier 6" diffs use different seals to the later 7" setup, believe same as the 323gtx rear diff?

 

 

if you have access to a lathe or know someone that has then I'd suggest making a punch-tool to insert the seals as opposed to hammering a socket in the common manner  


or, drop the diff out & get the seals fitted in a press if you're worried about damage

I second the lathe suggestion. Sounds like a best idea overall although a more complex one
