I'm seriously considering a FI kit on an NB. I want a DIY kit with everything included. Open to SC or TC.

From experience, what UK kit would people recommend on here?

Garage42 DIY SC kits are about the cheapest you'll find, all pre cut just need welding together and cost about £170. You need to source things like a throttle body, idler pulley etc but you can get the car to near 200hp for about £1000 if you can get the M45 cheap.

By their very nature DIY kits are unlikely to include everything. If you want everything included you're better off buying one of the complete kits from Bofi or Blackcat etc, but they are a lot more expensive.

I'm good with a spanner (have changed many a headgasket and cambelt), but not welding nor know anything about reprogaming ECUs, therefore I'd prefer a full kit. Otherwise I'd love the challenge of the Garage 42 kit.

I'll check out Bofi racing.

I've no welding experience either but it's not too hard to learn, the cost of the welder is ofc an additional one if you dont have it already.

You will need to do some setup on an ECU (you'll need an aftermarket one), just basic stuff to adjust to get the car to idle and run even if it's just to get it on a trailer to go to a shop to be mapped properly so be prepared for that. The base map might be ok with regards to being able to start the car, but you'll still need to check the settings, set your injector sizing and check all the sensors are reading ok.

The Bofi kits are pretty much complete with regards to getting everything you need in one order and then just spending the time bolting it on. IMO the SR1 super charger kits they do are stupid money and not worth it at all. You'd be better off going turbo. G19 also do a supercharger kit which comes with most of the supercharger related things you'd need, but you'd still need to source injectors, a supercharger and a few other little bits separately but that's not too hard. I think they are currently listed as £480 + VAT but it's such a new product I duno if that was an early adopter only price.

Hmm, yes, maybe I should get a welder and teach myself. Work put me on a welding day course once and I got the hang of it pretty quickly (given their ideal conditions).

Yes, did think that Bofi SR1 kit was expensive; I'd rather have their turbo kit at that price.

So the alternative from G19 is a bracket kit all built up, while I source the rest of the parts.

I'm seeing this ME221 mentioned a lot; is this a piece of hardware that will replace the stock ECU? Do I then configure this new ECU by hooking it up to a laptop? Excuse my ignorance.

Yeh although I'm not a fan. They've made too much of a fuss all over FB about various things that I'll not be using their products. By all means have a look at the features it has though and choose for yourself. The other options are a MS2 / MS3 ECU which Bofi also sell or a EFI ECU. Weight up the pros and cons of each and decide. Best also talk to the tuner you are looking to have map the car and ask what they're familiar with would prefer to use as it'll ultimately make a big difference to your experience.

And yeh you'd use a laptop to configure it. I'm not that knowledgeable with that side of things atm, im still welding up my M62 SC bracket kit and the EFI ECU I ordered is due to be finalized any day so I can order.

90% of the stuff I'm reading talks about using the ME221; there is the odd megasquir. Purely for this reason clueless me will go with the ME221.

I've since found an awesome document that really details what's required for a DIY turbo conversion. It's just what I wanted and solved a lot of the confusion I had. Now it's time to buy an MX5! To Autotrader!

Sounds like you've got an interesting build yourself there?

There is masses of Megasquirt info on the US websites, more than enough to enable you to set up your ecu, and a hell of a lot of it is Miata specific.

The EFI ECU uses the same tuner studio software too, so much of the info should be very similar, and the ECU is 1/3 of the price.

If you aren't going to tune it yourself, pick someone to tune it for you and speak to them before choosing an ECU.

Most tuners have a favourite, or at least experience of certain ECUs already and you probably don't want them spending hours figuring out the foibles of a particular ECU they've never worked with before while you are paying them probably by the hour.

Megasquirt is very well supported on multiple platforms, not just the MX5 and there's a huge amount of information on the US forums, especially if you want to have a go at tuning yourself. It's probably common enough that most tuners have had some experience of it.

For all the noise that ME make, they aren't that well known in the grander scale of things.

DIY EFI as mentioned above uses the same tuning software as megasquirt (tunerstudio) but is cheaper and a bit more aimed at the hobbyist, like megasquirt was in the old days.

There's a lot of other options available on ebay etc, some of them are a bit shady (unlicensed megasquirt clones) so do your research carefully. There's a page on the Megasquirt site which lists out how to spot knock off hardware.

There's also other options like Haltech, Link etc which are very good, more established in other markets but not so much in the MX5 world.

1/3 of the price; I like the sound  of that. Why would anyone choose MS over EFI is it's a 1/3 of the price?

Is it feasible for a man in his shed to tune his own ECU?

Otherwise, am I right in thinking I'll buy an aftermarket ECU and it will come with a map that will at least have the car driving. I then am able to gingerly drive the car to the tuners?

I think the comment above is really worth reiterating actually, ME does make a lot of noise and they are growing but in reality they are still pretty small.

EFI are relatively new and the larger companies with a bit more backing decide to shit all over them on FB etc to protect sales. EFI is more aimed at the hobbiest and DIYer, a lot of the information and development for additional features is open source. IMO this is better, you get complex problems solved way faster with a base of users committed to resolving them if they have access to do so, rather than waiting on a company to decide if it's worth the development time and then sit there and actually do it. But there are also some limitations with this. EFI is actually just up the road from me and I helped out by taking my mk2 down so he could swap the ECU in and do some testing before sending the boards for production, we had no issues getting the car started after the ECU was set correctly. The EFI ECU is speeduino based.

ME look like they offer quite a lot of phone support to the end user if they are having issues (although I've heard mixed reviews about the quality of this, some say it's very good, others not so much).

If you pay the small fee for the paid Tuner studio license (there is a free one which is more than adequate) you get access to auto tune which might be of use. I think ME221 come with a similar feature as well.

I'm going with EFI, mostly due to cost, I dont see the need to spend so much more for a "better known" ECU when a cheaper one with local support to me will do everything I need it to. I also prefer that it runs tuner studio as it's better known than the ME221 by the people I've spoken to about tuning. But I'm also choosing due to the way I've seen ME behave online. I have friends who have ME ECUs and they've generally had no issues with them, and the issues they have had have more been related to their tuner than anything else, but at least 4 of us feel the same way and have chosen different products. Your reasons might be different and I'd recommend you don't worry to much about it and instead base you choice on the features you need, cost and your tuners preference.

The EFI ECU uses the same tuner studio software too, so much of the info should be very similar, and the ECU is 1/3 of the price.

DiyEfi? so a Speeduino then - look up the thread by @Bilbo for info @EddieJT

^^This

my local 'tame' dyno disslikes the me software setup, if you turn up there with MBE / DTA / OMEX it's a different matter & he's happy to tune them :thumb-up:

For all the noise that ME make, they aren't that well known in the grander scale of things

yup, mostly known in mx5 land due to their plug&play ecus as opposed to needing conversion looms...

US forums have little love for me products, theres various reasons behind this & not just brand-loyalty

after reading some fb threads (including me's input) I'm not too interested in their products

There's also other options like Haltech, Link etc which are very good, more established in other markets but not so much in the MX5 world.

theres a Speeduino seller on ebay with interesting reviews (mostly on fb), if you're buying then reserch the seller & if they're a 'company' (vat registered helps prove they are legit as opposed to someone in the shed? - helps with warranty issues ;) )

I'm seriously interested in the 'Core4' ecu from DiyEfi, I've an old MBE ecu (well 2 but...) but maybe newer tec. is the way to go

although thats a while away yet

Speeduino being open source does need a little care when selecting the company you buy from. Some ebay sellers can use cheap components which wont last or might cause signal clarity issues so just be aware and make sure you're happy with who you decide to buy from. Not all of them are like that ofc, just something to check.

By the sound of it your first port of call really should be a buyers guide on getting a rust free mx5. And TBH as you haven't bought one yet you are likely better off buying an already boosted one. Something that has been built properly and is properly mapped (so many aren't, make sure you get proof of mapping and not just a £50 3 run dyno plot), or take the risk and have it mapped yourself right away.

In terms of why you'd choose MS - unless things have changed recently, some of the more advanced features aren't available on the Speeduino based systems yet. These probably don't factor into the grand scheme of things in the capabilities of most MX5s though. MS has been around a long time, is well supported and to a certain extent you are paying for that. With some of the newer systems you are possibly going to be the first person to run into an issue, or have implemented it with your particular setup so you may need to accept there will be teething problems - but if you are buying from a "company" then as long as their support is good you should be OK.

In terms of if it's possible to do it yourself - entirely, as long as you have a wideband lambda sensor and plenty of patience.

How long it takes depends on how good the basemap is if you are supplied with one - some systems will come with nothing and it's up to you to find one or make your own, but most of the ECU vendors will have something that will get you up and running to a certain extent, or for Megasquirt there are plenty of user created basemaps floating round which will get you started. Getting it running is less of an issue that getting it running 'well' in all circumstances - this is where the patience comes in as things like cold starts / hot starts / idle tuning can take a lot of iterations of making very small changes and then seeing if it improves or gets worse - particularly cold starts as you get only one chance a day. This is where patience really comes into it, but you do feel you've achieved something when you get it running right...

Guess I'd better commit to a tuner then. Any recommendations around the (South Croydon) SE London/Surrey/Kent borders?

Regarding buying an already boosted car, I have finally bought a house with a double garage, and am keen to get myself a project car, so building the thing is half the appeal for me. I had a 10 year break from cars while I concentrated on family and houses, but was always doing engine swaps etc on parents' drive. I think they call it a mid-life crisis lol.

I will have plenty of patience as this will be a slow weekend build hobby. I'm good with the mechanical side of things but clueless with all the ECU stuff; will check out that Bilbo thread when I get a chance.

No worries, that's fine if you want to go about it that way, gives you more choices for a base car anyway.

if you're looking for a car then forget evrything EXCEPT for rust

and be cynical of repairs as filler (& grinding) hides many sins

I think they call it a mid-life crisis

the crisis is having not enough room / tooling / money etc.
